'Twas A Bible Accurate Christmas...

The Nativity is one of the best-known stories of all time, but there are some weird parts to the original tale that often get overlooked. What's more, there are a bunch of non-Christian elements, like gifts, trees, and mistletoe, that were originally pagan customs.
What was the first Christmas actually like? And where do all the unusual traditions come from? In this video, we'll investigate the Christmas story as depicted in the Bible, and explore the many nuances and misunderstandings of the original text. Of course, no one can ever be truly "Bible Accurate", so note that these depictions are entirely subjective.
However you celebrate this period, or don’t celebrate it at all, I wish you peace and happiness in whatever you get up to. Thank you for 437k subscribers!
H.
P.S. Oh, and in case you notice in my voiceover, I had a slight winter's cold at the time!

Me at 10 in Catholic School: How come it's only in Matthew but the other three don't think it's a big deal? Teacher: Ummm, you see...let's learn about Divine Mystery. Slightly Honest Teacher in Catholic High School: Matthew wrote to an audience of Jews and he wanted to prove to them that Jesus was the new Moses. So he uses Exodus as a parallel for the story of Jesus. Which leads to your next assignment: How did Matthew make parallels to the lives of Moses and other Biblical figures? Site passages in the New Testament and a corresponding passage in the Old Testament. Also use Prophetic verses in the Old Testament and how they were fulfilled in Matthew. 5 pages, body paragraph format, MLA citations and bibliography, due after Thanksgiving break. Me at 16: FML. What happened to Divine Mystery?

The whole being born in the feeding trough thing is a nod to Christ’s destiny. In Israel at that time, sacrificial lambs were put in mangers and brought to the temple to be inspected for blemishes. If the lamb was without flaw it would be fit for sacrifice. Also, the manger being a feeding trough brings to mind the Eucharistic destiny of Christ as our spiritual food for the journey, aka bread of life. As a bonus, Bethlehem translates to house of bread in Hebrew.

Except that the tree topper isn't a Biblical angel (and the Shepherd's angels likely weren't the trippy-vision ones from Revelations): The Christmas tree is a German invention, and when Protestant Germany kicked out St. Nicholas, they introduced the Christkind, who resembles a conventional golden-haired angel with gown and crown. It's supposed to be "The embodiment of Jesus's generosity", but that's too complicated for kids, so they believe it was the angel who looked after the baby in the manger.

The infanticide is completely consistent with Herod’s character, and since Bethlehem was a small village the number of victims would have been fairly low. Judah was a backwater of the empire and such a minor event would have drawn no outside attention, although of course the poor folk of the place would have it seared into their memories. I see no reason to discount the historicity of Matthew’s account.

There was a theory I heard on why Josephus did not write about the Slaughter. It might have been because Bethlehem was a very small place( roughly fifteen hundred residents), therefore there may not have been hundreds of babies killed, but only a few. This might explain why Luke did not hear about it. Not to mention, if Josephus had heard about it, he may not have been impressed by it enough to write about it, considering how small a spectacle it was compared to other scenes Herod made, seeing as he had extremely bloodthirsty habits, Augustus himself said: “I would rather be Herod’s pig than his son.”

Context: The number of Magi ("Wise Men") is not specified. It could be one, three, twelve, whatever. Because there were three gifts, we just show three Magi out of convenience (keep in mind that there could still be three gifts, just many of the three gifts: eg: present of gold for each of the twelve). Because of the three gifts, we show three Magi out of convenience. When there is the chance that there were 15 Magi OR just three, it'll be easier to just draw three, for convenience. As long as there are Magi to represent whatever number of them there were, it's okay.

One of the problems here is that the association of Christmas with Saturnalia/Sol Invictus has been repeated so often that it's considered a historical truism. However, as Classical scholars and historians of early Christianity will tell you, it's not at all that cut and dried. For example, the feast of Sol Invictus might have been promoted to compete with Christianity, not the other way around. History is just a lot more complicated at ground level, as comforting as we might find it in our own age to draw such facile connections.

And the census was not a regular census because of the governor quirinus being the key. And he said Herod died in 4 bce but Herod Antipas was king from 21 bce to 39 ce so I’m not sure where he got that info? When I visited Betlehem in 2019 and went to the nativity church I learned that it was actually common for shepards to keep their animals in man made caves, dug in the lime stone, during the nights. There are so many caves left in the area, one on which they built the nativity church, saying that it's the place where Jesus was born, tho many people believe it can be one of the many different caves in the area. It doesn't seem too far fetched that a cave like that could've been translated to stable, since it basically was their version of a stable back then.
@punishedsnake6141
@punishedsnake6141 2 жыл бұрын
Hahahaha you dont believe that do you? Limestone is incredibly hard. So hard that there is no way a shepard is going to dedicate YEARS to carving out a small cave for his animals. "Hey guys im about to start building my stable. I will be done in 20-25 years."

@@punishedsnake6141 I tried to do some research to see what kind of stone it is, but I'm not really sure. But there are thousands of caves across Israel/Palestine, so no matter the stone, it's a historic fact that people used these caves for different purposes, like keeping there animals in during the night. So if Jesus existed and was born under the circumstances described in the bible, I think it's a pretty well based theory that he could've been born in one of these caves in Betlehem.

@@travisconover4762 Our "goodness" is not good enough. All have sinned. 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures Acts 3:19-20 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord. And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you: Romans 10:9-11 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. Isaiah 55:6-7 Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. Matthew 4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Romans 3:19-26 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. John 18:36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. 1 John 1:8-10 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. Isaiah 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. John 3:3-7 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. 2 Corinthians 5:16-21 Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more. Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God. For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. Ephesians 2:1-5 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. John 3:12-21 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God. Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Galatians 1:3-5 Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ, Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father: To whom be glory for ever and ever. You probably still got quite a few things wrong: Biblically accurate angels were terrifying however the rings within rings withe eyes is a description from different beings in the last book of the bible. The "normal" angels did have wings but they were most certainly terrifying rather then cute. 4:43 a better theory however is one that it is actually an extremely rare event which is a tripple planet conjungtion of the planets Jupiter and Saturn, which occurred in May, October and December of 7 B.C., said BYU astronomer Kimball Hansen. In February 6 B.C. a third planet, Mars, moved into the grouping. According to many scholars, Christ's birth occurred in April of 6 B.C. It was calculated that this happened around the time jesus was born, but not just once which is already extremely rare but 3 times. Which explains how it appeared there for multiple nights and how the wise men from the east would be able to follow it. Also it's never mentioned there are 3 of them (the magi) I think so that's also people assuming things I think. The explanation for the Feeding trough: They were actually still in the house but rather in a "back section" of the house. Why did it have manger? *the paschal lamb* They are kept in-doors like a pet (Or possibly for the other animals, *but* those animals were actually probably outside because it was summer) As for the infanticide: It is likely there were only a few babies from 0-2 years in Bethlehem at the time meaning it was probably forgotten as a result. (Basically there weren't enough deaths for it to be recorded in history or have a big impact)

Which is why he says it was *like* (insert the closest thing he did know existed)

@@noahwattel4226 They are angels, but they're not "angel" angels. As he explained in a different video on Biblically accurate angels, they're Ophanim, which is the third highest rank of angels, only behind two other nightmares in Cherubim and Seraphim, which are the mass of faces and wings ones, respectively. The "angel" angels that we talk about are archangels and angels, which are the lowest rank of angels and the ones that mostly do the conversing with humans. And considering the only ones that are described as singing praises to God all the time are the Seraphim, which are the six-winged and just a head ones, it would probably track that those were the angels that suddenly appeared out of nowhere and started singing and not the standard angels.
@noahwattel4226

@@SomeOfTheJuice it wasn't just singing though they were playing instruments as well it was like a heavenly war band. Plus Angels are shape shifters so it's not like they would be limited too one particular form. Also you have to keep in mind that these descriptions are interpretations of the writer and they are mostly compared with real life things so for example when the word "wing" is used it may simply be used because of the lack of a word that matches what it looked like. But yeah sure they are "angels" as in beings that were created before humans though there are a lot more of those and not all of them are the servants of God we usually mean when referring to Angel. For example any non-(human or animal) spirit, demon or monster would technically also classify as "Angel". Also the "what looks like" rings with "what looks like" eyes are from revelations and don't even fall under the groups you mentioned they are again a separate thing, but sure in the broad sense of the word they are angels.

Cool summary! A couple little things, "inn" is not really a mistranslation and more of a case of contextualization. There was never really a point in English culture where it was normal to have a separate room for guests in your house, so it would have had little meaning to translate it as "upper room." I find it annoying, to be honest because they claim to be accurate while completely ignoring the fact that it talks about angels that look like humans multiple times in the old testament. These are the messengers (Angelos in greek). It only talks about the other types of angels when we see the Cherubim defending holy places, or we get to the apocalyptic literature where the prophets look at heaven. They have different jobs, so just trying to get the shock value of "biblically accurate angels" while not genuinely understanding the source material is a bit cheap.

A few corrections: The actual number of wise men is unknown, as it just says "men" and no number is given. There were at least two. People likely assume this from the number of gifts. (Opinion: While it may not translate to "king", a king can be a wise man, and it is possible that they were assumed to be such from the gifts that were brought since gold, frankincense, and myrrh were, and still are, rather expensive items.) The wise men also would not have been at the birth but would have arrived up to two years later as evidenced by their conversation with Herod whose order was to kill those who were two years old and under. By that time the family would have moved into a house. Jesus was still a child when the family moved back from Egypt, not an adult. At least in modern times, Jewish children are considered an adult when they reach the age of thirteen. In Luke 2 it tells of them going to the feast of the Passover in Jerusalem, which they did yearly, at the age of twelve. Mind you, these are points taken from the text of the accounts themselves, disregarding any that could be made about faith.

@@KAvanAlten Please explain what is "inaccurate" about the writings of the gospels? Just because they left out details that many think is necessary, does it mean that they are inaccurate? I mean, it doesn't say WHEN Jesus was born, does it then mean that the whole account is just inaccurate? Because later on other people added things to the story that wasn't even there in the first place, like for example that Jesus was born on Dec 24/25th, when in fact this was just something to make people become Christian and still keep their pagan rituals and festivities. And in fact, the lack of details about this account, wouldn't it be logical to think that the reason behind this is because it's NOT important to know these things. For example Ecclesiates 7:1 says "A good name is better than good oil, and the day of death is better than the day of birth." So instead of like many people do during these times focusing on the fact that Jesus was born and celebrates that, they don't celebrate what he actually did, which doesn't have much to do with the events surrounding his birth, as at birth he hadn't accomplished anything. And also to take into account there is only 2 birthday celebrations mentioned in the bible, and they only give dark details about it. And also funny to notice, the majority of people celebrating Christmas, doesn't even believe in him anyway, so why even bother? I mean why isn't the world celebrating the birthday of Muhammed or why isn't the world celebrating Moses birthday? Where is the logic in that?

Read solely as myth and legend, the Bible is a rather peculiar tale of a vengeful and willful god using himself/his son to provide a means of extrajudicial salvation outside of his original ordinances. If you take away the more modern interpretation that the Abrahamic god is meant to be omni-benevolent, then it becomes something much closer to other religious myths, like those from the Roman and Grecian pantheons. Given the extreme cultural significance of the Bible throughout history and in modern times, even if you aren't a believer, it is worthwhile to read.

It's important to understand why it is you do not believe in any of the myriad religions that have ever existed so you can accurately assess if your religion is truly any different. I am a Christian and have grown up in a Christian school, so I've been taught much of this so many times XD, it's honestly surprising how many people still don't know much of this stuff. Granted, I'm fairly certain the Bible doesn't specify the type of angels that were present at the birth or that appeared to the shepherds, so it might not be entirely accurate to have those ones, but they are Biblically accurate to a specific type of angel called, I believe, Ophanim. Those things remind me of Hermaeus Mora from Elder Scrolls and it's why I think they're really interesting XD. There are some thing that were left out, like the fact that the wise men most likely didn't arrive until at least a week later. But, then again, it's very hard to really tell exactly when they did arrive.

I heard that they arrived on the third Tuesday of the fourth month, but my source may not be terribly accurate as they also claim the wise men rode in on anti-gravity Harleys and looked like ZZ Top, were from Gryffindor, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff and spoke in a broken combination of Klingon and Elvish.

In my junior year of highschool, I had a science project which was basically making a Christmas ornament that lights up, we had to solder all the wiring and lights to the battery and switch and try to keep it as clean as possible. I, being the artist I am, asked my science teacher if I could draw my own image instead of using the ones provided to the class. He agreed as long as I made it Christmas related. That wouldnt be a problem because it was going to be an angel. He was very hesitant to let me use my drawing of an Ophanim. After explaining to him what it was, he accepted it but I'm pretty sure he took off points for it

@Garry Ellison but… the literal text has been disproven by scientists time and time again. So u really can’t believe in the Bible literally unless u are dillusional. The Bible is a collection of stories (both made up and inspired by real events) to unpack moral philosophies. It should be analyzed, not taken literally. For instance, the entire creation story in the Bible does not line up with science whatsoever

@@TechnoVisionTV You fool deceived by Satan. Before science WAS GOD. Science isn't over God, never has been and never will be. Furthermore, the same science that you worship has found archeological discoveries of things that happened literally thousands of years ago that the Holy Scriptures have recorded, such as the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. You can go catch a flight right now to the Dead Sea and still find holes of sulfur in the ground from when God destroyed the city, but you're a fool, so you won't believe it. Another piece of evidence that supports the scriptures as literal is the fact that every single prophecy told has come and will come true. The prophecy about the birth of Christ came hundreds of years before Christ was actually born into the body of a man. The devil has your mind and you fail to see it. REPENT or you will lift your eyes up in hell.

I took a class in college where we looked at the Bible as of it were an historical document, and many have scoffed the idea. I appreciate that you are able to see the parallels, and understand time and translations change things. Yet, there is still a great deal of useful information in the Bible.

I took an couple of anthropology classes and am still a bit salty about the fact that it wouldn't have reasonably been a good profession for me to make a living in, because I absolutely loved the subject. It taught me so much about how to determine the relative value of a source for determining to what degree it can be relied upon to create a timeline of events, and how comparatively poorly the biblical texts meet such standards as corroborating documents: unknown authors, unknown dates of publication, mistranslation errors, heavily biased editing and compiling, second and third-hand accounts being written as first-hand accounts, etc. It really became the turning point in my separation from the faith.

The Bible is a very useful historical document, as it chronicles both the history of the Jews and early Christianity. Even if one doesn’t believe the miracles, it would be very naive to just ignore it as a whole.
