Twin Cam Crate Engines, Fast and Easy Harley-Davidson Power

Crate engines are not cheap but they are the fastest and easiest option to get big power or replace a Twin Cam engine damaged beyond repair. Buying a used motor is risky and no one wants to throw down hard earned money only to find out that used motor is no better than the one being replaced. We'll take a look at a much less expensive option from Ultima all the way to the biggest baddest crate engines from FuelMoto and S&S. If a crate engine isn't exactly what you're after, there's the long block option from Harley-Davidson. You get a new engine with all the upgraded Screamin Eagle parts and keep your matching VIN number.

Would you go with one of these crate engines or just rebuild your existing engine, which crate engine would you choose?

At 120,000 miles the oil filter mount on my '04 Heritage broke off. The best option seemed to be the Long Block. I got the 95" with a 203 cam. They made phone calls and I had my bike back in 10 days!!! I got the low end torque and wide power band I wanted. @@GixxerFoo I like that the Harley Long block program adds the Timken bearing but I doubt they fix the crank. Another Timken helps prevent the crank from scissoring but I would rather trust an S&S crank over the stock one even with the Timken. The early Ultima engines had an issue with a tapered bore in the cylinders, worked for a shop in Tucson late 90's early 00's. That doesn't seem to be an issue these days. If I were to buy an Ultima motor I'd pull the top end down and reassemble it myself. The only complaint I've heard in the past few years are head bolts not being torqued to spec, and that's about it. The Ultima engine with the Timken bearing is enough to convince me. Haven't heard of anyone check the pinion shaft runout on the Ultima but I'd bet it's better than H-D. S5S is not the same company that it was in the 60's all the way up until the early 00's. They're way over priced for what you get now.

Great video as always. Since I'm riding a 2000 FXSTB, these engines are all more money than my bike is worth. My choices would be either rebuild the existing engine or junk the bike. If I needed a bike quickly I would buy another used bike and rebuild the Night Train when I had the time. That is a nice shelf!
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 3 жыл бұрын
That's the issue with crate engines is they are really a matter of convenience and that's not cheap. Even used engines they want as much as what you could buy another bike for, you can upgrade and rebuild cheaper than a crate. Now if you had complete failure and the engine is now trash, but you have a lot into a bike I could see a crate engine being a option.

@@GixxerFoo Agreed. Like most of us I've dumped a lot of money into quite a few bikes over the years, never to see it again. I decided when I bought this bike to keep things on a budget. Rebuilding can be a real pain, but it does save a lot of money over the crate engine. The crate engine is convenient, but if you were to try and build a engine to the exact specs of the 111 it would cost more. S&S parts are high in my opinion, you could likely build one close to the 111 specs sourcing parts from quality sources like dark horse and other quality performance manufactures and do it yourself cheaper.

Why can't the Motor Company build their motors with the welded perfect cranks, geared cams, high output oil pumps, more bearings in the bearings etc. etc. etc. It's not like we aren't already paying enough!
@GixxerFoo

What happened on the cranks is when they did away with the timken bottom end and started pressing a roller bearing in left crank case half, they went to robotics pressing cranks at 40,000 psi and it increased production and cut Harley's costs. Of course that wasn't passed down to us as buyers.

It would be cheaper possibly to rebuild your engine with the same specs as before. But building it to the quality of the ones you compared it to would probably cost more then you could build it for. I’ve got over five grand in my engine and I don’t have the big numbers that the Fuel Moto has or the bigger S&S and mine is an M8. You still can sell your old engine and make swap even less expensive

This would be a hard decision for me because I want an engine built for my style of riding. I want roughly 100 to 130 plus foot-pounds of torque between 2,000 and 4,000 RPMs which is easy to obtain. A bulletproof lower end that runs cool and is built to last. Peak horsepower is really not a concern of mine because I keep my revs at or below 4,000 but I would like to have 100 HP at or before 4,000 RPMs. A blueprinted engine from Kevin Baxter which he calls SkunkWorks would be tops on my list and more expensive than an S&S or FM but I'll be wrenching myself and saving a few bucks. I'm guessing that day is three to four years away but will be here before you know it. The toughest decision is how do I put 1 0r 2 grand a year aside for the build.

To me on a well taken care of Harley with 48K is nothing and up to 150K is correct for life expectancy on a well cared for engine. I would recommend inspecting and replacing your cam chain tensioners if needed at 48K though. A well cared for bike can run 100k easy barring any mechanical failure which is hard to predict and is possible with any machine. A lot of bikes that fail were due to abuse, poor maintenance etc. But if your bike had any factory defects it likely would of let go well before 48K.

The 103 has enough power for that, you still need to fix Harley's f%^k ups ie help the engine breathe, oil pump,cam plate ect. But the days of building shot rod Harley doesn't mean anything anymore. Getting a Harley long block is going to be stock horsepower, so roughly 65hp for the 88, 70ish for the 96 and a 103 will get you about 75hp. IF they do, it sure would be interesting to see that S.O.P and I know it would change when they paid out big time. So if some agency takes your bike just for THAT reason, you should retain an attorney and enjoy the outcome. Now, if it's a DUI or something bad is found, and the rider is arrested for something then yes the bike is towed. We've all heard guys swear their bikes were towed for no reason... sure it was.
