Performing a camshaft and gearcase removal from a Harley engine. I'm demonstrating this on a Harley Davidson Softail Twin Cam B motor, but much of this applies to the A engine as well.

I'm a multibrand mechanic of many years and when I want a teaching reference for my friends I send them to this channel. As for readers "how soon to inspect" questions, the answer is upgrade the shoes (there is no point in pulling the parts just to do a visual inspection) at minimum immediately. My bro inspected his ~30K mile 2005 RK before a cross country trip (I nagged him into it). His shoes were pitting badly and deeply grooved. Bro comes back from trip all happy and gets otherbro to bring his ~30K mile 2001 Softail (both bikes were bought from boomers who didn't ride them). The shoes on that engine were so worn the timing chain was ~1/8" from hitting the spring and the plastic fell apart during shoe removal. I cut open filters on both bikes and there was no visible debris and neither oil pump was scored so we got lucky but that's not always the case.

While you have the plate off. Always look inside the feed holes. Harley doesn’t do a very good job at breaking of casting flash. Mine was blocked about 20%. A dermal would make fast work of it. Again... Great video bra!.. Larry

That surely is a question for Shane. We asked him quick and he said similar but not exactly. He can help you directly if needed. Can you hit the subscribe button, it helps us and he often responds to subscribers when he gets to a computer. You rock! For faster service see below: We try to respond to these questions but with 700 videos on here its hard to keep up with the demand of over 400 requests a week for “a quick answer” it's just become hard to manage in a timely manner. Good news you can catch him directly. You know him from his videos, no shortcuts on answers so he wants you to get everything you need. If looking for technical help, business collaboration call him directly @ (602) 345-0432 Are you just wanting to say thanks? Hi Shane I am about to change out my cam chain tensioners inner and outer on a TC 88 A. I am hoping to leave my oil pump on my cam plate but noticed you loosened off the Allen caps on it. Was that just for your class. I have a tool I made that should allow me to leave the cams in place for the inner tensioner if that makes any sense. It’s my first time but I have watch and read lots. I have cut my push rods and everything already while on the base lobe. So can I just go ahead and remove cam plate with oil pump with original 4 Allen cap bolts torqued to spec in place. Thanks

cessnatpa it’s not my idea. Just look on KZfaq Cam chain tensioners and you will come across it. I will look and try to narrow it down for you. I still have a couple small things on it to modify for inner tensioner. But it will . It works for outer tensioner no problems.

Great vid! And in Sioux City. We ride up there couple times a year for pleasure and for the greatest corned beef and cabbage at McCarthy & Baileys Pub. A career in MC repair?? I have an 81 GS850, 03 Electra Glide & a 2012 Glide. They are my career. But the pay sucks. Can you take the time to answer a question that pertains to all the owners of the TC88?? The 2003 TC88 I have has 6300 actual miles. It's like brand new and I really want to ride it a long time and to far away places. If you had this bike, what would you do to make it reliable?? Hydraulic tensioners? Weld and balance the flywheel? Change the cams and tappets?? Perhaps sometime I'll see you in SC. Thanks

If you want a total reliability build. You mentioned welding the crank. I wouldn't. Don't mess with the stroke. Harley is already under square. With a 4" stroke. To have 1/4 of a 426 Hemi the bore would need to be 4.125" Or a 106". 4" bore will make a square engine at 100". The 95"s are not 95"s are actually 94 and change (sorry I don't have that number off the top of my head right now). Ultima 4" stroke crank with rods. Fueling cam plate w/ baisley popoff valve. Use the pop off spring from Baisley for your cam profile. Gear drive cams. Chuck those chains as far as you can. They rob a lot of horsepower, create a lot of friction, stretch, wear down the tensioners. Everything about the chain drive is junk and they tried to fix it. Fueling oil pump. (the pump and cam plate don't have to be fueling, it can be S&S if you want to spend more.) DO NOT RUN SCREAMING EAGLE in the cam chest on anything. Lifters. The stock lifters have bad oiling. Jim's makes about the best. There are others anything beats stock. Cam profile. For a street bike not ripped on hard. The S&S 585G cams are not bad at all. The 625G are better but, require more checks for installation. Also the 625 you have to remove material to .20 clearance for the lobes. (It was worth it. I run titanium pushrods from Jim's and Jim's roller rockers with Jim's roller lifters. Shim the rocker lateral/end play to 0.003 to 0.013 also install rocker lockers. Heads. Lots out there. A very trusted company and if I were doing my engine over again as a sleeper. Zipper's can port polish heads with the right springs and retainers to your engine specs. Or they have TC heads already done just send yours as a core. I run Edelbrock Performer RPM on my Dyna no complaints. S&S is not bad either. Anyone but Screaming eagle. Pistons and compression are up to you. I run J&E 10.5-1. That's about as far as you want your compression. Otherwise premium won't cut it.All balls inner primary bearing makes shifting far better.

Looks like those are for bench testing, and probably only used a few minutes at a time. Not exposed to hot oil long enough for any real damage. I am curious as tot he brass fittings though, and the thread pitch.

Just wondering why you cracked the oil pump screws loose but did not remove? You just removed the whole plate and pump together. Couldn't you have just removed the entire assembly without loosening the oil pump screws at all?

You may have not watched the entire video or series...the reason to crack loose now is it is easier than trying to hold the cam plate and lossen. I can think of a couple of reasons... 1. If the motor is removed and on the bench 2. It's better to have a direct feel when using a torque wrench and not distracted by multitasking (but I dig your thought and even have an old video showing how to do it...😎 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sNJ6mcV4zL-wn30.html ) 3.Some tensioner designs would not like the potential "reverse pressure" of possibly being wedged as your torque the fastener. I've seen this question come across before so I'll tackle it. Yes, you then use a special pushrod with a much longer threaded insert on installation. Good video. But why mark the chain - against what? Also why Mark the bottom sprocket timing Mark and not the top? Pointless really as lining up the timing marks on disassembley and reassembly is a given and straight forward; the marks are there. Also why speed up the sequence of undoing the plate bolts, if anything that was one of the most critical points that was glossed over. You would be better encouraging novices to go to the dealer; not get into something that is totally alien. Bound to go wrong.

Hay Shane, take a chill pill. If you put something up on KZfaq expect criticism because people don’t necessarily know the full story. Respect to what you are doing and I am sorry if I didn’t get the full story. I was just pointing out things that as a life long mechanic on bikes; who was looking to learn something new - allowed his impatience and knowledge to overcome good work. Apologies. Ride free and live long. Peace.
