A tutorial by Jeff's Little Engine Service on How To Repair 2 different Honda EU2000i GENERATOR that won't start or run after STORAGE. Or runs with the CHOKE ON only. HOW TO FIX it the EASY WAY. Repair it with the CARBURETOR still on the machine! Fails to start after sitting only a few months. This GENERATOR was in very good condition so an obstructed FUEL SYSTEM is most likely to blame (Ethanol) fuel problem. Remove float bowl , Clean the carburetor and fix the problem. An Experienced mechanic zeros in on the problem and fixes it easily. Dirty and or plugged CARBURETOR main jet plugged. Clean Float bowl. Change spark plug and oil. DOES Vinegar work to clean the rusty carb?
ETHANOL IS BAD!

*A quiet **Generater.Systems** , love the dual fuel capabilities, camper is 50 amp but the adapter helps and found it still handles the load. Haven't taken a camping trip yet, that's in a couple of weeks. Will see how well it does over a long weekend.*

We have used the kzfaq.infoUgkxOTeIs0vv4_9B5hsmnLsk9r930uDQLu_Y for probably 30 hours with our camper and it’s been great! The noise level is really only noticeable when running the AC and other appliances like the microwave, hair dryer, or coffee pot. It’s not huge like other ones and it has wheels so even at 90lbs, I can move it!

Thanks for this excellent tutorial. In my case the main jet had become blocked and even the throttle butterfly valve had become stuck with gunk on top of all the rubbish in the float bowl and the fuel tank needed a big clean out too!! Had to strip the whole carby clean, etc. Put back together and purring like a cat!! Mike, Australia.

This worked perfectly. I did exactly this. Gas had been in generator more than a year. Did have the residual fuel dried up in fuel cup and carb. Took the carb cleaner and toothbrush. Worked great. Put all back together and added fresh gasoline. Took around 15 pulls then started up. Ran generator around 1 hour. Thank you for showing this. Thank you Jeff.

On any generator, I recommend draining all the fuel and spraying wD-40 in the carb and remove the fuel line and spray WD into the carb. I try and run or drain any fuel left in the bowl. The WD-40 prevents the float from sticking and doesnt go sticky with age. I used to summarize all my snowmobiles that way every year and All I had to do was add fresh fuel and they started and ran perfect every season.

Hard to start my EU2000 after sitting a while - thought I had ignition problems, but cleaned the carb anyway and added fresh fuel - only use Premium w/o ethanol. Anyway, no help it seemed. but figured there might be oldre fuel in the line so reassembled and drained bowl 5 times. Looks like that worked! Note: pulled handle slowly 4-5 times then more quickly to0 try and start, After five times of draining bowl, priming bowl (3-4 slow strokes before a start attempt) it worked on time number 5. This video helped me get through all that.THANK YOU!

A couple hoses and you can take the carb to the bench to clean it correctly. The main jet has 7 little holes on the side if it you have to make sure are clean when there is corrosion in the bowl not to mention the main jet hole which is usually clogged. Unscrew the main jet CCW and remove it to clean properly. Check all the holes for daylight. Remove the emulsion tube under it by tapping the carb on the table or blowing compressed air through the little hole by the gasket. It will pop out and clean it too with carb cleaner. Reassemble and the main jet bottoms out. No backing so many turns. Use regular gas no ethanol.

1.Syphon fuel from tank after running for a few minutes 2.After this run again until it dies. 3.Drain remaining fuel from carb bowl 4.Choke and pull cord a half a dozen times to clear any remaining drops from carb. 5. Tighten drain screw back and store unit. I do this every 6 months and never have a problem with my eu2000.

I'm convinced that draining the fuel completely from the carb only helps a little bit. Obviously, a carb should be drained before long storage, but small residues of gas actually evaporate more quickly than in a full float bowl. Pilot jets in generator carbs clog frequently and technically these never have gas sitting in them after every shut off drained or not other than the residue left each run. Draining the carb is no guarantee that you won't have to pull and clean the jets eventually. "Fuel system cleaners" seem to do nothing on those small deposits, too even ran close to full strength which is annoying.

Thanks so much for this video! I have two Honda EU2000i generators, and both were having issues. One wouldn't stay running for more than about 10 seconds, and the other would only keep running with full choke. These units have less than 60 hours on them, but they are about 5 years old. They are like new. I watched the video, learned how to take them apart and clean them up, and learned the importance of non-ethanol fuel. I picked up some premium non-ethanol fuel (TWO stations within a few miles of me have it!), drained the tanks, added some Seafoam, and they both fired right up and, more importantly, stayed running for the hour I ran them. One of them still has a surge on the Eco mode, but it didn't die on me. I am wondering if that won't go away as I run them again today with the Seafoam cleaning the fuel system more?? If anyone has any advice on getting the surge, I would love to have it. Thanks again!

The ‘choke’ closes off the air intake, only allowing gas to enter the carb. Thus choking it…no air. Choking of any gasoline/combustion engine is only intended to be gas only for a couple of seconds. Anything more than that will load up the carburetor and engine with only gas. Known as ‘flooding’ it. Choke/choking is generally only necessary in a cold engine. Once an engine has run for 10-15 minutes (or more) it usually does not require being choked. In fact, you’re more than likely to have problems restarting it because now you have, flooded it. So, to answer your question: only choke for a couple seconds or it will die from no air…like people if choked for any length of time! Hope this has helped. FYI-This isn’t a good video on servicing small portable generators. If you get lucky it might work but for only a little more time an effort you can clean the jets, properly. Then you know you’ve done an adequate cleaning of the fuel system. Blowing carb cleaner and air upward from the intake orifice has about as good a chance of clearing the jet as does flossing your teeth with a rope!

There you have the twin generators but how ready are they? I place mine at ready-to-run location and fill gas up to the top. This will minimize air space that will oxidize and turn the fuel bad. I run the generators for 15 minutes on the first day of the month. Then I release the left over fuel in the carburetors, refill the fuel up top and put them back in hibernate. This has been going on for at least a year and I have no issues of starting them every time I want. Just my way of having them ready.

I always drain the remains of the fuel from the carb on my honda eu 10i. Know that 2000i has a timing belt that has to be replaced after about 10 years. Its not an easy job to to. I think eu 10i is better because it has a pushrod engine, but it does require more frequent valve adjustment compared to eu 2000i's engine.

If I get to it quickly, I have found that by blowing into the fuel lid hole, it will run fine again. Some times thats all it takes for the rest of the of the duration. Im guessing it is getting some air in the line somehow, but once I blow into the filler hole a few times then its good again, do you have any suggestions?

Did they produce power??? What was voltage? What was the hertz? Was the inverter working properly? If your intent was to make the engine run, good job. If you were working on my generator I would expect a thorough tuneup and a check to make sure that the generator did what it was designed for: to generate electricity at the proper rated voltage, the proper rated hertz, and the rated watt output.

Why would you not remove the carb from the first one? There was plenty that I don't think you could guarantee to be clean unless you did. Having raced 2 stroke (2 cycle) engines for years, I have TWO ultrasonic cleaning tanks. Getting the carb properly clean throughout is the KEY to making your engine reliable! Even without the ultrasound, very fine single strands of copper wire (single strands of a multi strand cable) can be used to poke-through all the micro tubes in the carb. You have a compressor so you can easily blow the cr*p out of the carb even without 'poking' the copper wire. I am surprised!

Many parts of the country have ethanol-free gas. You don't need much for these little generators and it would solve these carb problems. Carbs HATE ethanol gas.

I'm a landscaper and I keep non- ethanol fuel at least 4-5 gallons 365 24-7 use in all my 2 stroke equipment and generators I run my generators at least 1 a month.

There was plenty of room for some quality job and there was a decent amount of pigs work but at least one seems to work fineand the other one not as smooth. But what the heck!!! That's the attitude many opt to have.

Never forget always test run your generators with a load on them not just running the engines you must put a load on them all the difference in the world just because they run doesn’t mean they’re going to run with a load on them. And I’ve converted mine to run on propane and natural gas as well as gasoline which sucks used hutch mountain conversion kits probably the same company that made those magnetic dipsticks you discovered

I just replaced my carb and now the eco switch doesn’t work. Just runs at full throttle now. Any clue what went wrong?
@BlackCell462

You didn’t hook the auto throttle assembly on top of the carburetor up correctly. It’s all in the white cap with wires going to it held on top of the carb with 2 screws.

The owner cared enough about the generators to add a nice high-end dipstick with magnet (I've bought them on ebay) but didn't care enough to drain the fuel prior to storage, or use ETHANOL FREE fuel. NO GOOD. LOL

Run non-oxy gas with Star Tron or Sea Foam. That should help with the crap in the carb.

Honda should have put in carburetor drain like Yamaha did on most recent model.

They do. The clear hose he put on the one carb is a drain tube for the carb. Has a small screw on underside of carb bowl. You turn it 1/2 turn and it drains the bowl. I agree with a few people above that said to run some Tru-Fuel or similar in Generator for storage. It won't age like pump gas.

not good. But it will probably be ok. as long as it was not something hard like wood or metal. ...maybe blow some air in there or try to pull the rope fast a few times the air pressure may blow it out

Dude when you empty the oil you should make sure the gas cap is tight and turned off you were dumping gasoline out your carb. Measure your oil in a dedicated measuring cup and only fill it too twelve ounces. Get a cheap turkey baster and fill the remaining oil slowly.

That’s an aftermarket magnetic dipstick/oil cap .. it comes with an oil changing tube you screw in so you don’t spill the oil inside the generator when draining/refilling ...

Since it is an aluminum block and the bearings are not of steel or iron constructions, I guess the only iron filing you would find on the magnetic plug would be off the cast iron/steel crankshaft, and if so, you have a real problem on your hands.
