Toxic things dance teachers do that we need to STOP normalizing... let's talk about them! So many teachers are well-intentioned, but let's be honest... sometimes their methods can be damaging to the dancers they teach no matter how good their intention was. Since awareness is the first step in the process of change, I am making this video for both dancers and teachers to shed light on these behaviors so we can take steps toward positive change. If you didn't catch part 1 of this video about toxic behaviors DANCERS do that have been normalized in dance, go watch that now!

My teacher also grabbed my hair bun and used it to move me to my spot. I spoke up and told them they cannot do that to me and it’s wrong and they said t hat I have offended them and hurt THEM for telling them no! Dragging someone by the hair is assault. Freakin insane.

Hi Dancers! Just a bit of additional detail I forgot to add to the first point that I want to mention here! Of course, when adult dancers are being treated as if they cannot think for themselves as if they are young children, that is infantilization. HOWEVER, with young children and even teenagers there can also be an opposite effect where those dancers are treated as if they are far older than they actually are (which sometimes promotes maturity but sometimes places unreasonable standards on them). It's a strange paradox that is good to be mindful of. Lastly, some forms of mistreatment I mentioned fall under the general umbrella of disrespect not necessarily infantilization. Also, with the "pitting dancers against each other" point: In the personal example I gave, I don't think it was necessarily wrong of my teacher to have me jump next to a girl who could jump better to learn from her. Rather, the way the teacher verbalized WHY she was doing it with a big "why can't you just dance like her" overtone in a way that felt humiliating in that moment... THAT is what I think could have been approached differently (though not the biggest deal). Thank you for bearing with me as did my best in this video but had a few details or explanations that I could have tightened up a bit or given better examples for!

I’m so glad that you talk about these things. I am in my fifth year of dance teaching and I teach ages 3-16. I know I am not perfect and make mistakes as a teacher. But I also do think it is important to teach classroom discipline especially as kids are in preschool, early elementary so that’s where I feel like I’m a little stricter. But these ideas are something I need to remember as well.

This boy does dance competition team with me and our teacher choreographing the dance wanted somebody to lift him but he wasn't comfortable and repeatedly told her he wasn't comfortable to th point where he had to yell at her because she didn't care and she then told him not to yell at her and to respect her and he ran out crying. I also hate when people pick me up. But, what the hell?

To me what you experienced is a huge deal. It humiliated, and hurt you. This is why there are so many things in the dance world that doesn't change. We want to believe the best of our teachers, directors, and higher ups. However what if they continue disrespecting and abusing students? Forget the beauty of ballet, what there really doing is teaching disrespect and instilling fear and low self esteem.😪❤️❤️❤️

Fat shaming adult dancers! I’m talking size 0 skinny dancers!! I’m mean it’s not ok for any size dancer but ridiculous when a dancer is over 40 and thin.

Would you consider reacting to the teachers from some dance films or tv series? (For example Bunheads or Dance Academy.) Could be fun!
