I think you'll do OK on a $200 truck, there is probably more good to gain than bad to fix. When it coughed periodically while running, that sounded to me like a simple spark problem, so you may want to chase down the rabbit hole of coils, plugs, and wires. Might be something simple, you never know. Don't know what engine is in the truck, but hope it doesn't have individual coil packs for each plug, since that can get expensive. I'd start by looking at each plug to see if any of them look different or show clues, test each wire for proper resistance, and then test each coil. Good luck!! Try not to turn a $200 truck into a $2000 truck like some of us knuckleheads do!!

for sure I can see money being dumped on this thing fast. everything I buy is so expensive. righ now I'm trying injector cleaner to see if that helps. I did a short mileage test and I'm getting 8mpg with this 98 7.4 L 454 big block. I'd like to see 10mpg or better if I can.

I spent much of my childhood working on cars with my father. I hate it now! Especially because they are now so difficult to work on. You might me able to get that motor running well without major repairs. Worst case, find another truck with a good motor and bad body, swap the motors and sell the other truck for $10,000! :-)

lol really seems like everyone thinks their truck is worth a fortune these days. so selling one with no motor should atleast bring a few grand. lol

I hear you on having to work on them but $200 for that truck! I will work my butt off on it. lol Check your timing and valve lash. see where that is. Best of luck with it Dave. It will be worth a heck of a lot more once you have it running right. Have a great weekend! See ya!

I have 2 1/2 ton 4wd Chevy pickups. One is a 2001 with 123,000 miles. Getting some cancer that I have really fought to keep at bay. The other is a 2005 with 40,000 original miles. Absolutely no rust. It does not get driven in the winter.

Could you post the P-codes that are still showing? Oughta help the mechanics out there with the most bang for your buck repair. A single sensor could throw the whole thing outta whack. G'luck with blue!
@daveknowshow
@daveknowshow Жыл бұрын
thanks it was like thirty codes so I reset all the codes after I fixed the mass air flow sensor and the oil sending unit sensor. so far I have an o2 code that came back but nothing else of importance.

You done good Dave. Good luck chasing the problems lol. This new stuff is a mystery to me. I don't mind working on my 70 Chevy truck. Plugs point and condenser is about the only problems I ever have. I think the rear main seal change involves removing the oil pan on those motors. I'm sure you tube has videos to show you how

@@daveknowshow the guys that know that stuff are pretty good at it. You may end up with a decent truck for a lot less than decent trucks cost these days. It is unreal what they bring and new ones should pay you rent for what they cost. I don't know how regular folks do it

You could drive that truck to a junk yard, yank the tires and wheels off, and more than triple your money Dave.

Heck, I would have probably given somebody $500.00 for that truck. I don't especially care to work on vehicles either, especially a more "modern" vehicle. With that said though, $200 for a 3/4 ton pickup with 4 wheel drive in my mind is a good deal.
