If you think that a 135% insurance incrise for adding a Turbo is much, you should take a look at Germany. Here, if you want to legally Turbo/Supercharge your car, you‘ll need to do a bunch of tests on your vehicle, including letting a professional racing-driver drive your car a bunch of laps around the Nürburgring, to prove, that the engine can hold that much power. After that you also have to enter all of those modifications into you cars papers. In total you’ll easily spend between 10.000€ (12k USD) to 20.000€ (24k USD) just for legally being allow to Turbo/Supercharge your car. This is without the cost of the parts, or the labour installing them, plus your insurance also increases a lot (I don’t know the exact percentage).

That list of insurance increases for the UK isn't correct. All depends on your area, the actual car, where it's kept and your age. I had BMW E36 with a mod list as long as my arm and it didn't increase my insurance premium at all.

The UK insurance breakdown isn't entirely accurate, I'm on a modified policy and visual modifications don't increase anything the same as most bolt on Mods until you get power over a certain figure above stock. The rate remains the same

Nice to see so many of my fellow UK followers commenting. I used to sell car insurance for a while. It largely depends on the insurer and how they determine risks and set their premiums, some of the companies in the Uk just will not touch any modifications at all so we have a number of specialist companies we can go to for full coverage. It’s always best to fully declare everything, insurers will always look for any excuse to reject payouts and undeclared mods are a common pitfall Where you live has a large impact and that’s down to crime statistics - if you live in an area with higher car crime, you pay more, but driver age is a killer. Under 21 and kiss goodbye to driving anything larger than 1.2 litre engine unless you have very deep pockets, between 22 and 25 years old it’s a little better but things don’t really improve until over 25 years old. This has lead to all sorts of other risky behaviours for young drivers like taking insurance out in parents names which is also not allowed (it’s called fronting) and if found out the policy will be cancelled. At least we can modify our cars and get away with it on the whole. Many countries in Europe and elsewhere are very strict on mods and you can get your car confiscated if it doesn’t comply (like ride height)

Love the videos Craig! I'm from the u.k and actually had your book on cars of the first two films when I was younger, great stuff! Two things to note about the uk: we have a lot of council built garages which you can rent (and are only allowed to rent) to store cars, usually for less than £50 per month but 1 floor, no electricity or water... Also most policies on things like car modifications have bipartisan support or no-one cares enough to make it an issue so voting won't change small laws like that, if you have mods you should look for a modified specialist but I know a few people who have crashed with undeclared mods and they can usually hide it before the insurance company looks at the car, not a good idea though

I live in England and I'm proud to say we modify our cars like everyone else, yeah we insure some mods. Many people don't bother informing insurance. Yeah we're not the best at doing as we're told. The number 1 issue we have is actually fuel prices.

Here in the UK insurance is pretty crap but we have some companies like Adrian Flux and Brentacre which are modified insurance companies. All mods are free to declare unless it adds power. So shoving a wide body on it won’t cost you anything.

Hi Craig, in the UK we've got an optimistic shot at raising our motorway speed limits with the new PM, so that's a big goal just now. Secondly, we have enthusiast insurance companies who expect modifications on cars, it's only the big insurers who are freaked out by stickers and air filter upgrades. There is work to do, but it's not a total loss for car enthusiasts here.

UK insurance isn't so bad. There are specialist insurance companies who specialise in modified or vintage cars etc. I have a 1jz swapped is200 with huge list of modifications all round, specialist car insurance is actually cheaper than insuring the same car as standard. Doesnt make sense to me but not going to argue. Being a new/younger driver effects insurance alot more especially with mods.

Hey Craig, UK Insurance isnt so bad, there are specialists that are great with Mods. Engine swap and full body kit cost me no extra and I also got an agreed value 🙂 I have a new house and youre right, no garage!

I live in the UK and I have a mk4 Toyota supra and when I went from 2jz ge to GTE single turbo my insurance went from 400 a year to 1600 a year!!

Just a note from a UK viewer. Though "mainstream" insurers would definitely have an aneurysm if you phoned them up and told them you were fitting a turbo to your car, what most sensible car enthusiasts do is in fact find one of the specialist insurance brokers that specialise in modified and otherwise unusual vehicles. They can be quite cheap - at one point I had a quite heavily modified mx-5 (Miata to you Americans) with a TD04, custom exhaust, megasquirt, stripped interior etc and was paying about 300 pounds a year to insure it, which in the UK is cheap - by comparison, my daily driver which was a diesel skoda at the time was more like 800 a year! I suppose I was far more likely to kill someone else or have an expensive claim in my ratty old daily driver that did 10k miles a year than in my mazda that made the occasional trip to the drag strip on a trailer or was very occasionally driven to a local car meet. Having said all the above, many enthusiasts do engine swap or turbo their cars and don't bother telling the insurance company - highly questionable but also surprisingly common.

Here in Houston TX idk if other places but here dropped trucks are mostly being stolen on a daily basis especially lifted ones

Great vid Craig, I have collector car insurance on my Supra. Now that theses car are as old as they are they fall into that 25 year rule. I have mine insured for 65k but will say its not a cheap monthly payment.

Awesome video. Oh I'd like to add. Get that shit in writing. Also have pics of your car with the parts on it. And possibly just get a lawyer. I had lizard insurance a while back and my car got stolen. When I got the insurance, I asked if they insured parts and they said yes. I mentioned all the parts including the wheels. They said I was insured for everything. They straight up pulled a switch when it came to adjusters. And the one that took over said I wasn't insured for my wheels. And made some clause in the paperwork. Apparently the wheels are a extra fee and separate from the other mods. The wheels were a set of Advans. The 3 spoke ones. Forgot the model. They were used, but still. I had most receipts and pics of everything else on the car. Friends shops printed up receipts of stuff I didn't have the receipt of. And also went to sites and got the most expensive pricings and submitted it lol. Even had them pay for my the engine swap. It was crazy. Then they tried to recoup the funds by raising the cost on the soarer that I bought. I dropped them.

UK insurance ain't that bad you have to pick a mod insurance and most of them go down when you declare your mods, I'm paying less for my 3.0 Audi than your average Joe pays on there normal cars

The apex-i power fc is a stand alone ecu. Not a piggyback like you mentioned on the rx7 details. There may still have been a need for separate boost controllers and other things like that. But they wouldn't have been on the stock ECU either. So maybe that's what you meant by "piggyback solutions"? Interesting video otherwise though.

Some insurers have charts like that in the U.K. but everyone with a built car goes to a specialist who understand cars and what they are and insure fairly. There’s an example of one insurer that doesn’t charge for cosmetic mods on insurance.

Any Twitter for Craig? I wonder what he thinks about the real underground street car scene in PR with cars that are not seen in the states like Mitsubishi Mirage Technica with V6 swaps or just swap the 1.5L Toyta Tercel engine for a V6 as well... Loved to hear some thoughts on this.

There is some decent insurance companies in the uk that don’t up your premium for visual mods and basic bolt on performance mods as long as you could drive when fast and furious 1 was released so are getting on now 😂 and have plenty ncb, we have the agreed value policies also Your right about garages though there is so many uk houses without them it sucks

Have you seen the youtube with the only Tokyo drift evo ? I’m with Shannon’s insurance, and we came to 106k on my gs300 and that’s without AN fitting and lines and insured for $75k, I’ve got the buy the car back opinion if the car salvageable, as there is 40k of engine and gearbox work. Once I do my fully forge bottom end they put it up another 5k... and when I take it to a car show and a Shannon’s rep looks over the car, they take 10% off my renew free every year and they also gave me race track insurance. So if I crash at the drags it’s covered . Cars drive 1-2 times a week and only $1800 a year 👌🏼

Car insurance in the UK is strange. Some companies charge an affordable rate which makes sense for that car and driver. Some others over charge the prices massively to the point where the insurance cost is like 10x the value of the car. Sometimes they won't even insure your vehicle and once you get past round a lot you get sent back to the same company and they bend you over their desk and say they can insure it but they won't cover you on anything, (they want your money). Another thing is they are very interested what you are doing with that vehicle and that can also change their minds and rates.

Yup us in the UK get screwed on cars. Fuel tax bringing a US gallon , about the only thing thats smaller in the US ,being around $7 for 98 ron. Insurance that you must have a minimum of third party. Still costs 17 year olds around $1500 even for a 1ltr shitbox. and as you mentioned my own house is older than your signed declaration so no garage. Thank fuck im old and i live in a quiet area of scotland and pay less than $350 for my insurance
