JRB Tree Climbing and Saddle Hunting

Жыл бұрын

The Agile Hitch (or Agile Friction Hitch) was recently introduced in the following video: • Introducing the Agile ...
This video is a focuses on tying the hitch, specifically for climbing applications. The Agile Hitch is an alternative for the Prusik, Klemheist, Autoblock and other friction hitches, but unique in allowing the incorporation of a carabiner as a handle, which allows the hitch to be used in a fashion similar to a mechanical hand ascender. The Agile Hitch could be considered a variation of the Klemheist. JRB uses the hitch in DSRT climbing, but does not rate it as a top choice for SRT, given the advantages of the Longhorn Agile Hitch and JRB Ascender Hitch, at the cost of additional effort to construct them.

thanks for going back over the Agile Hitch in detail, have been playing with it, seems to jam up on me in rappel, have tried 3,4, and 5 wraps, have used it as a back up above the jrb 5-2-3, and solo on the double stationary jrb climb, and SRT pole set cliimb, will have to try the overhand bend, the hunter’s bend has served me very well however as that allows me to adjust the loop length after tying.

During rappel on a munter, the job of a friction hitch is to be there as a backup only. Wiggle each one loose before starting your rappel so that you can tend it with just two fingers. Our brain is telling us to balance the load between our two hands, but we have to override that and make our tending hand have a very easy job. Using a super munter may also help

@@jrbtc yes, I like the super munter when doing an srt rappel, also studied up on the longhorn agile hitch and will convert to that for my lineman and tether , your adaptations are fast and furious for me!!! I’m satisfied with the JRB 5-2-3 for ascent both double stationary and srt but will play with the agile and longhorn agile

Appreciate that. Be sure to use a handle and to use it as you climb. The only jamming issues i have heard of are where there was either no handle or it wasn't being used.

@outdoorsman9384 This is a friction hitch. It can be used in ascent, preferably in a doubled rope system. But we would not want to use a friction hitch as a rappel device. Use the Munter and your hitches are just a backup. See my videos on rappel on the munter

I had to add an additional bottom wrap on my longhorn agile hitch. Using 6mm trc and 8mm truefl as a main line. It slipped immediately when loaded with the 2 bottom wraps
@jrbtc
@jrbtc 6 ай бұрын
In general, if you have a slipping issue: 1. Make sure your initial loop isn't too long. It should be nice and snug when you first form it and gotta squeeze the loop thru the remaining nip. 2. I don't add extra wraps on the bottom but going to 6 on top is fine. 3. I prefer 9.5mm or larger rope for single rope applications. Sure, i can do it on 8mm, but we gotta consider worst case conditions like a heavy climber on a wet rope.
@austinogrady8832
@austinogrady8832 6 ай бұрын
@jrbtc I'm a heavier climber, so I took that Into consideration. I'll try the 6 top wraps tomorrow. I liked the 8mm for packability, but contemplating a larger size main line as well, thank you sir

It is your creation? Looks great Jhon; I trust in overhand in my prusik cords too, so it's strong enough and easy to untie Hugs

Sorry for delay, sometimes comments back up on me. Yes, it's an original idea, really just a Klemheist variation but better performance particularly with the handles. They help prevent jamming.

Great recap. I might have missed it but what is application or pros/cons to the longhorn agile vs the agile with either overhand or hunters bend? I think I heard the profile of the overhand is the most compact - better for fishing through crotches?
@jrbtc
@jrbtc Жыл бұрын
I prefer the agile hitch for stationary doubled rope. I prefer the longhorn agile for single rope applications. The ad y'all hitches quicker to tie and less bulky but more difficult to break under load. However in a double rope application it only holds half of our weight and so it is not a problem. The longhorn agile hitch offers that one-handed operation to remove Slack. That is a feature we want in a lifeline. I will be demonstrating some applications for it in the future. But Longhorn agile is also more bulky and so it would not be my Top Choice to try to run that through a tree crotch.

On SRT, mine jams... I use a pretty stiff 9.5mm Canyon rope with Technora Sheath, tied the Agile hitch with nice 7mm Sterling Accessory Cord... Tied it several different times, with and without carabiners. Using it above a MadRock Safeguard. The Agile Hitch jams going up after loading first with climbing footsling, then bodyweight... Doesn't jam immediately, but does after a few "steps" upward. 2nd and 3rd Coils from top roll upon themselves so tight it quits moving. I'm wondering maybe Dual Rope works because it's load is lightened by 50%, so the hitch doesn't distort. (Love this channel!)

Agile hitch needs a handle and load on it to keep it loose. It's not my preference for SRT but is doable. I like Agile on DSRT and Longhorn Agile or JRB Ascender Hitch on SRT.

If it's above your device, as a backup, make sure it has a tiny bit of slack. It's only job is to be prepared for your device to slip. And if that happened, you do need a plan to be able to unload it and transition into rappel. I covered that in the video: Self Rescue after Loss of Footing

Hi John, in terms of blocking strong, is it the agile similar to a hedden knot , or less? Thank you man 👍👍
@jrbtc
@jrbtc 6 ай бұрын
Over the years, i have often been surprised when doing strength testing, and particularly in how the materials used and number of wraps affects the results. And so unless i have done a side by side test, I try not to guess. But let me explain. The Hedden Knot has the load strands directly routed to and loading of the TOP of the helix. The Klemheist and Agile load the bottom of the helix. In my experience, loading the top creates a harder bite. Loading the bottom makes it more workable and easier to adjust after load. With the same number of wraps, would expect Klemheist and Agile to slide similar to the way the Prusik slid in the test video. However, adding an extra wrap can make a huge difference. What are you using it for?
@verticalfeel
@verticalfeel 6 ай бұрын
@@jrbtc I've used the hedden as a back up in a second line , and man it's amazing, very safe! On first view this hitch ( agile) looks pretty similar , so I wanted to know if it works that well/ I see your answer and understand it could be different , but maybe works
