About Tyler Childers:
Nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in Kentucky is a little town called, Paintsville, where the economy is dependent on the dying coal industry and a tradition of music thrives with the US 23 Country Music Highway Museum and Butcher Hollow. Carrying on the music tradition is native son and current Lexington, Kentucky resident, Tyler Childers.
Paintsville is located in the Big Sandy River Valley of Johnson County in Eastern Kentucky made famous for its lawlessness, religion, and booze, and a song about a horse thief, a rambling man, and an attempt to gain some good ol' Appalachian self-justice is what "William Hill" is all about. Following his "Papaw" around to the Kentucky social institutions - church events and barber shops to name a few- as well as a lot of coon hunting with his dad, Tyler has heard a tale or two about the misadventures of a few good ol' boys and he gives his own spin of these accounts behind a whisky-soaked voice well beyond his young age.

Lyrics:
Back before these calloused hands did all this work
We used to sit up at the flats
Acting like we'd live forever
ADVERTISING
Getting high and skipping class
I reckon we were heathens
But in her eyes we were saints
Now you're calling all the boys home
As heavens angels carry her away
I will follow you to Virgie
Although it hurts me so
To lay to rest this mountain beauty
That the Lord's called home
Can't you see her up in glory
I can see her through the pines
Back when all us boys were trying
To make sense of all these strings
I can see her in the corner
Singing along to all our crazy dreams
I will follow you to Virgie
Although it hurts me so
To lay to rest this mountain beauty
That the Lord's called home
Can't you see her up in glory
I can see her through the pines
I will follow you to Virgie
Although it hurts me so
To lay to rest this mountain beauty
That the Lord's called home
Can't you see her up there, Cody?
I can see her through the pines
Saying boys be good

I’m from Virgie, Ky, and I went to church with the old lady this was written about. My dad had his funeral at the same place in Virgie. This song means more to me than anything. Not only does Tyler Childers make me proud to be from One of the smallest towns in Kentucky. He makes us all proud to be Kentuckians! He’s a wonderful storyteller, and as a musician myself he’s everything I aspire to be! Still watching this faithfully years later and it never gets old.

My wife after many years of battling with depression decide to end things on her own terms 2 days ago. This was one of her favorite songs. These words ring so true now, and I take comfort knowing that I can speak to her when ever I need to now and see her up there in glory with every sunset, beautiful tree, and sky. Chessie I love you and while I will never fully understand why you made the decision that you did, know that I’ll love you forever and that god called home his West Virginia mountain beauty, this is Gods plan and his plan is perfect. If you are reading this and contemplating the unthinkable please reach out to those who love you or call the hotline. Nobody should ever have to feel this pain that her loved ones and I are going through.

Same here. This song reminds me so much of my own Grandma. I remember just getting into all sorts of trouble with my friends in high school but to her, me and my friends could do no wrong. She's been gone almost 10 years now and this song just broke me in a way I hadn't felt since that day she died. I needed it though. Definitely going to be checking out the rest of Tyler's music now.

Growing up. I always considered myself troubles. Emotionally and mentally. I always thought there was something wrong with me. But with my grandma. I couldn’t be more perfect. I swear with her, there was no worries in the world and I never felt more complete and whole by her side.I’ve grown and I’m proud of the man I’m becoming. I carry her with me everywhere I go. I just wish she was still here. So I can talk to her and thank her, one last time. I love you grandma.

I have always been proud of my Appalachian heritage, but he takes my pride to another level. The first time I saw him in concert was fourteen days ago at Freedom Hall, and I bought tickets to Red Rocks and Charleston, SC, scheduled for this year. It was an amazing spiritual experience, where his voice takes you. My daddy was also a coal miner; I come from eight generations. The mountain roots run deep. The Lord was right there with us at the concert; I could feel it. If you get the chance to see him, go.

My grandma passed February 2019 and when I was 14 15 and 16 she had a garage and she let me and my friends make it into our chill spot. She would be right out there with us laughing and enjoying life and this song really hits home because it didn’t matter when it was or if I was in trouble we always had her place

Back before these calloused hands and all this work We used to sit up at the flats Acting like we'd live forever Getting high and skipping class Yeah I reckon we were heathens But in her eyes we were saints Now you're calling all the boys home Heavens angels carried her away So I will follow you to Virgie Although it hurts me so To lay to rest this mountain beauty The lord's called home I can see her up in glory I can see her through the pines Back when all us boys were tryin' To make sense of all these streams I can see her in the corner Singing along to all our crazy dreams And I will follow you to Virgie Although it hurts me so To lay to rest this mountain beauty The Lord's called home I can see her up in glory I can see her through the pines I will follow you to Virgie Because that's what us boys are for To help you out when you get weary And you can't go no more And can't you see her up there, Cody I can see her through the pines Sayin' 'boys be good'

There are no more ties to family. If the last 2-3 yrs have taught me anything it’s that you can’t count on anyone but yourself, not even family. When the chips are down they’ll act against your best interests, they’ll comply with tyranny and hand you over if they perceive it as the right thing to do or something that’ll make their lives easier. In the very least they’re the ones giving the tyrants power and legitimacy with their compliance making it that much harder for the rest of us who are unwavering in our noncompliance

I'm 45. Been an underground hip hop artist for 30 years under the name "Blame One". Never listened to a country album in my life (although my taste is very diverse). I work production in a warehouse that bottles beer (we bust our ass) here in San Diego and a coworker of mine sent me a link to this album. This song brought me to tears and I can testify that this man is a true poet. Thanks for opening up my mind tyler. I'll be grabbing the vinyl for this.

I'd heard of Tyler Childers in the summe, but it wasn't until hearing Feathered Indians about three weeks ago that I really got into his music. About a week and a half ago, I stumbled upon this song and while Spotify helped me out with the tunes during some house cleaning. A tough life has led me to a point where I pretty much just don't cry anymore. I'm not a cold or mean person, but I just don't seem to shed tears for much of anything anymore these days. However. by the time the song was over, I was bawling like a baby. Just the other day, during a car ride with my eight-year-old daughter and again my face was streaked with tear stains from the emotions brought on from hearing this amazingly sweet tune. My sweet daughter was crying right along with me and I knew then that this guy right here was the real deal. I'm not sure I've listened to anyone else since I came across all his stuff on KZfaq that I have yet to find anywhere else and I'm not sure anyone else's voice will ever suffice for my ears. Tyler, you are amazing! Thank you for sharing your talent with us. God bless.

Everyone needs a grandma like this in their life, whether it's their own, a friend's, or a neighbor. Someone just to see the good in us, whether we really deserve the benefit of the doubt or not.
