This song is about the Polish Solidarity movement. U2 is a very political band and write songs about many different struggles around the world. And not knowing them when they have been the biggest rock band on the planet for the last 37 years is something. 😉

The song is from the POV of Lech Welesa. He was the leader of Poland's solidarity movement (labor union) back when Poland was communist. He was jailed, and this is kind of a love letter to his wife from prison.

U2 are probably just one of the biggest bands in history and it blows me away that so many of the younger generation haven't heard of them, I grew up with this band and they have a ton of hits that spanned several decades, super talented and a lot of their songs have a message. The lead singer Bono used his music to try and change things for the better around the world, including in his own country Ireland which was going through a civil war in Northern Ireland between the Catholics who wanted an independent Ireland and the Protestants who were pro British.

This is a very very deep song and represents a lot more then just the title of the song. I guess since I was a teenager when this record was released it has a much deeper meaning to me since it relates to my perception of the band and the era. WAR is an amazing album but even the band itself changed over time. Rattle & Hum is also a very underrated record and has never gotten the respect it deserves IMHO.

U2 sang a lot about political issues in Ireland and around the world. This is one such song about Lech Walesa, a shipyard electrician who led the Polish Solidarity Movement which wanted democracy in Poland. In 1989 this movement was finally successful in ending Communist rule in Poland and was instrumental in ending the Cold War at the time. He was democratically elected President of Poland in 1990.

You can't really understand *U2* until you see something like their live show from Paris. There's a version on KZfaq that features *October* and *Bullet the Blue Sky* together as one acted as the intro to the other. Even if you have to block the video from us, watch that, with the giant runway, and the screens, and the megaphone. Only then will you get what it feels like to have a *U2* experience. They're up there with Pink Floyd/Roger Waters and Peter Gabriel for stage shows.

One of my most favorite songs. Not just by U2 but by anyone else too. The Edge uses many guitar techniques like harmonics. Muting. And different styles of picking. The bass is epic. Drums ditto. And, Bono is great up front. The version from the "Live at Red rocks" is so awesome. The whole concert from 1983 is my go to U2.

The video of them at Red Rocks in 1983 is awesome. You get to see "The Edge" play the guitar and piano at the same time. Many of their first songs had to do with the fighting between Protestants and Catholics in Ireland.

U2 is a band that had hits in the 80s,90s and 2000s. This song is from the 80s. A song from the 2000s is "Stuck In A Moment", which Bono, lead singer of U2, wrote about a fictional conversation about suicide with Michael Hutchence, the lead singer from INXS.

One of the best bands of all time. I've been a fan since the first time hearing them on the radio back in the day. Oh, yes, I've got a bunch of U2 on vinyl. ;) Whichever decade you look at, they're phenomenal. Check out "VERTIGO", "MAGNIFICENT", "NUMB", or "ZOO STATION". Or all 4. Or any of their songs, actually. My U2 playlist has 58 songs in it, and that's just the cream. Incredible band.

Some songs are of their time. I’ve always loved this song since I got the record in 83 with my first turntable. Too young to really get the politics of the song, but the music was incredible. It’s got one of the Edge’s best solos and yes, the keys sound amazing. I lost interest after 1987 but those early records were powerful.

kind of feel like you missed the point! I mean, I don't blame anyone for missing the references to the Polish labor Union Solidarity. BUT, it's pretty clearly about people separated by conflict, and the separation continues into a new year, and he's saying "nothing changes on New Years day [we're still separated] but I will be with you again".

I found out 'New Year's Day' wasn't about Bono missing a sweetheart, but about martial Law in Poland or something. I also learned to my disgust that their other hit, 'Sunday Bloody Sunday', wasn't about having to do chores like vacuuming the car and washing the steps (cos it's bloody Sunday again) - no, turns out it's about a massacre in Ireland or something. I won't be playing those again.

SMH - First, enjoy the music. U2 was the social conscious of the world in the day. They produced songs about real social justice and political oppression. The lyrics, in fact, refer to the persecuted leader of the Polish Solidarity movement, Lech Walesa. Coincidentally, after the song was released Poland's Communist government announced that they would abolish martial law. In 1980 the Solidarity movement in Poland, under the leadership of future Nobel Peace Prize winner and president Lech Walesa, challenged the oppressive rule of the Polish government. In December 1981, the Solidarity movement was outlawed and Walesa, together with the other leaders of the movement, was arrested and put in jail.

Thank you for telling me. I was a college student working in London in the summer of 1974, and the friends who worked with me were college students from Northern Ireland. They were Catholic and Protestant and their families were in the midst of the violence at home. We talked a great deal about the situation, but we also got to know each other. Two lines of my ancestors were from Ireland, one from Donegal, one from County Westmeath. Also, I remember well the Solidarity Movement in Poland. Walesa was a hero. I find that many people are not aware of the history. Sorry for the mistake, but it has been many years since these events happened.

If you do a search, you'll find that a good percentage of the Irish people despise Bono (Paul Hewson) enough to refer to him as 'a pox' in a lot of graffiti. I don't think the rest of the band is very popular with them either. Bono spoke out against the IRA (I agree with him), and all the Irish Troubles. The also enraged people in 2006 by moving a lot of their business out of Ireland, to dodge taxes, like they couldn't live on the millions they were raking in, if they paid taxes. The Irish economy was not good at the time, and paying their fair share in taxes would have helped a lot of their fellow Irish country people. I was pretty disgusted too, when they pulled that crap, and haven't bought any U2 music since, in any form. I don't blame the Irish people one bit for being angry.
