UAD Apollo Solo! Elite Audio Interface or Overhyped?

Күн бұрынThe UAD Apollo Solo is an audio interface I wanted to review for a while! I wanted to know is it "elite" or "overhyped". It cost $700 for the thunderbolt 3 macOS version & $500 for the type C Windows version. The MacOS version comes with LUNA & the heritage bundle. One of the biggest cons (depending on where you purchase the interface) is the lack of a thunderbolt 3 cable! Now, with that out the way, it has pretty impressive audio quality (to say the least)! However, the lack of I/O for the price point will have a lot of people in rage at best. Overall, it offers you professional mic pre's and above average software to get you running. Might I add it's one of the few fully compatible audio interfaces for BigSur & the M1 chip! Let's see what Universal Audio's about...

Ave Great Review! I Purchase the Apogee Symphony and a UAD Satillite TB. This Apogee unit is Formidable. This is part of my mobile setup. UAD is really design for MAC users and that I'm not. I'm been reading about different kinds of issues with the PC so I went with the Apogee Symphony!

Hey Ave, try the pultec pro eq?. It’s my Franks Red Hot, and a lot of other peoples too:) a very warm sounding emu. Question, have you got ur MPC working on you m1 Mac yet? Mines is not :(

I have the SSL 2 and its pretty nice. To each its own as long as you like it.. I respect your vids. I learned everything about the MPC-one from your vids. Im a old MPC 4000 user. . My brother and I compared My SSL2 to his UAD Apollo, & it wasnt that much of a difference. I feel if a person are going to use the DAW and plugins that comes with the Apollo, then that makes since, but if not, They would be just fine with a cheeper interface.. After my Brother head mines, he was like he wish he could take his Apollo back, to save some money, but it was to late.

@Ivy.... Exactly. The Antelope Audio Zen go is cheaper with Internal DSP and better plug ins. I have the SSL 2+ also. Much better I/O and sounds as good as the apollo.

Now ave why was you using a usb cable for a thunderbolt interface lol yes usb c and thunderbolt have the same connect type but different drivers and data rates. If it dont have the lighthing symbol it's not thunderbolt its usb c. Great review bro.

I have a Apollo Twin MKII and I use an MPC ONE. I can’t get both in communication. Can’t switch input/output on mpc software to Apollo because I can’t figure out what I’m not doing.

$130 cable!!!?? Dang bro. So is this supposed to take the place of the Arrow interface? I like that there is a USB version for Windows, my Apollo X6 doesn't like to play nice with the TB3 card I have on my Windows PC (now getting audio drop outs). Back to using a Focusrite Scarlett for now LOL Tried and true. Good to know that UAD stuff is working with the M1 chip. Might have to check it out MAC again someday. TTYL

I recently purchased an Apollo Solo interface, and I've encountered an issue where the Output selection text, which typically appears in white when pressing the "monitor button," has disappeared. I've tried resetting the interface and reinstalling the digital audio workstation (DAW), but the text still won't appear. Can anyone offer assistance in resolving this matter?

What's happenin Ave? Would you recommend the solo for folks who only use 4-10 tracks per project? I haven't had too much trouble mitigating plugins/processing power issues whereas I feel I need to drop a band on an AI instead of buying a new laptop or at the very least buying more RAM.

I just like the quality of the vocals when I record using the Apollo. IDK your current laptop situation but I'm mixing vocals on the new MacBook Air M1 & it can handle the basic stuff... I got up to 35 tracks with 16 third party plugins

I stopped using UAD products years ago. I have one of their older pci cards in my Mac Pro and while I used the plugins when I first got them I can’t say That they ever became my go to plugins AND the price point was always dumb for what they were. Everyone raves about UAD emulations but all I can say is meh. I was looking at a bunch of Audio interfaces and ended up picking up one of the Mackie FX mixer/ interfaces. I only needed output and rarely use inputs in my current setup. It was between a Mackie and MOTU.I looked at UAD out of curiosity but for my needs it wasn’t gonna fly for the price. Good to see it works for what you do though.

I had this interface (windows version) worked horribly with my pc. Now I’m rocking the new Audient ID14 MK2 and it is a beast of an interface. My TLM 103 sounds amazing with it. The converters are great. Apollo has been a nightmare for me.

@@Noisa I had one for Windows (Now I’m on Mac) and it work flawlessly. I really depends on the Windows PC motherboard and Processor. Intel works fine ,but computers with AMD chips have problems with the Apollo.

I'm using the ssl2 Plus in my main mastering studio, and I'm using the uad volt 476 with my vocals that I just got I'm pretty much convinced that the uad interface is the best one for vocals sounds beautiful not good on the entire mix but on vocals it's beautiful

Yea brother, they sound much cleaner and brighter than UAD, I have a twin duo and don’t get me wrong I Loooove it But...I have to do polishing and brightening up many of my beats cuz UA is warm and punchy but lacks a little on the top end where as with antelope that perspective of the sound is present off top

Agreed. The Zen Go is cheaper and better I/O connections and Internal DSP/Great plug ins. The Solo is good but they put the price up with the heritage pack. The Arturia Audiofuse studio is much better in every way.

You didn’t really get into the most unique feature of this interface: The Unison Preamps. When using Unison software preamps, it changes the physical properties of the preamps to emulate the vintage gear and it’s NEAR zero latency. It’s less than 1ms which is basically imperceptible to the human ear. You should really look into it. 👍🏽

most other Audio Interfaces have the USB or TB cable in the box. It shouldnt be a seperate purchase.

i have the apollo x4 its pricey but them plugins tho jut little stuff like comparing the waves cla 2a compared to the La 2a legacy bruh u can here there difference uad is more punchy but expensive and also grab the avalon plugin its super dope

UAD = built-in processor, high quality mic pres, LUNA, great software package, & pre amp modeling... Focusrite = decent quality mic pres, price point, and ok software package.

i bought an apollo twin for windows based pc strictly for access to the plugins(which are pricey but very nice). The trade-off is getting this interface to work without the snap crackle and pops and it's beyond frustrating. I'm at the verge of quitting music because of this ish.

You probably have latency issues I don't have an apollo interface but on certain interfaces when recording you lower the buffer rate and when mixing to use a higher buffer rate I don't know about the apollo interfaces

Go with Plugin Alliance Mega Bundle Subscription Ik media Tape Collection Ik media Buss and Classic Compressors And Waves De Noise De Crackle R De Esser R Vox And R Compressor Your set.... Those will work on PC Fine... Do yout own Mixes Get a dbx 266 xs Comp dbx 215 s EQ And a Mackie FX mixer going back into your interface Then Use Studio One And loop your whole mix through your mixer, and your dbx compressor and EQ through pipeline

I roll with UAD. I like it very much. I agree that not supplying a cable for their EXPENSIVE as H_ _L interfaces is straight BS. And yes they funnelize you to death. The funnel is of enormous magnitude. It's kool they give you some really good plugs, but lets keep it real, once a plug is developed and the initial investment recouped it's free money from then on. So yea, UA, provide cables guys. That being said, the sound quality is Great! Using the plugs right will definitely get you that analog sound if that's what you're seeking (You can get that with other plugs too). I like that UA provides short to the point videos on how to use the plugs. And Apple should come up with a much simpler way for people to identify which cable is which since some of them look the same but don't work the same. That's a bunch of BS too. But I am a Mac and UAD guy.

If you just completely plan on mixing in the Box, then taking your mix to a big Studio and you have three to four thousand dollars to spend on your home studio that's the only way you should even get involved with UAD

Bruh you should of shopped around and got that same cable for 10 bucks at the right shop bruh. And by the end of the day you gone spend thousands of thousands of dollars in studio sessions alone , Invest in yourself it’s not cheap. The thing that separates UAD from everything else is unison.. That’s it ,you can track and record in real time with high end plugins off the rip and use the Apollo preamp neve or ssl or whatever and it sounds amazing off the rip and if you spend a extra 300 for the black lion modd the converters become even better on the bounce down. And uad always have sales on their plugs 10 for 250 or 300 and their plugins sound way better than the other versions..

The wire (actually it’s a cable) is not $130. You purchased the most expensive braided tb3 cable made. You can get the non-braided Apple tb cable for $39.

Apogee symphony Desktop 🔥🔥👌🏾 I cant go back to my Apollo Twin X apogee game on Lock 🔒 Converters Wordclock and DSP. But whatever works for your need go for it.

@@AveMcree Yes they have their own to start and they are the only company that is officially licensed by Pultec” but their new Symphony has print FX so they have Esc Channel STRIP FULL GUI BUILT ONTO THE INTERFACE SO YOU CAN PRINT THE SIGNAL GOING IN ,APOGEE Alloy pre Vintage preamp emulations built on the card 50s American tube AP-66 & AP-57 the Apollo is a great line with lots of great plug ins but Apogee has always been the standard with conversion something I don’t see to many people mention if their working with a lot of external gear” The Symphony IO mk 2 Starts at 5K$ and maxes at 10K$ they came out with the Desktop for people who wanted the same top High end Card but in desktop forum with less IO they nailed in! Check it out it dropped winter NAMM 2020 a lot of things are just know starting to pick up due to how NAMM had to run things last year.

I forgot to mention get ready ....lol IOS ready so you have a full USB A host and usb C out on the back that it iOS ready so if your a pro iPad recorded Bam best of the Best 👌🏾👌🏾 also full Touchscreen on the interface Dual independent headphones that can be routed to different mixes.

LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! @ your delayed response for your "STAMP OF APPROVAL" LOL!! i was wondering if I was gonna have to write you a looooooooong comment on the dopeness of my apollo x4!! lol *** HERE'S THE 3 MAIN REASONS I ROCK APOLLO x4... 1) I wanted an interface that would double as a monitor controller. Didn't wanna buy some expensive-ass monitor controller like the ones made by Dangerous, Presonus, Heritage, drawmer, etc. and then STILL need an interface. Plus, the apollo x4 is a better looking monitor controller than ALL of those!! 2) I could CARE LESS about having all that damn outboard gear-hardware anymore!! The actual difference in sound is so minimal that I cannot just justify buying a $3,000 Avalon over a $150 Avalon plug-in. Especially when the ONLY people that can hear the difference are the 10-15 engineers that's actually bragging about graduating from Full Sail with a degree in Pro Tools. The average person don't give a damn that the low pass filter on the plugin is 1db inferior to the hardware. REAL PEOPLE DON'T CARE! 3) I didn't want to buy a separate Preamp!!! Again... the ONLY people that can hear OR care of the difference are probably those 15 engineers and the Professor from back to the Future with his damn Flux Capacitor!

Heritage Edition comes with very useful processing plugins that would normally cost over $1000. I don’t think the actual interface is any different. You just get extra plugins

Ummmm what? The Apollo series is the best interface in the history of audio interfaces. The plugins are meh but they dont overload cpu.

Now... physically, they might have the best FET.... compressor the best la-2a, and the best interface right now on the market, for vocals but over the entire mix the ssl2 plus still sounds better.... the VOLT, it's probably the best vocal interface on the market right now, but they shot themselves in a foot because they made the overall tone with such a high end you can't use it as a mean interface so you feel better off with a Motu, or am SSL 2+

UADs problem is they think they're going to make more money by being so unaccessible with everything but that actually makes them a humongous waste of time, because the convenience of digital is to be able to get the plugins and use them across multiple platforms on multiple computer systems

You cant Market plugins like you do, Hardware, Hardware can be very specific, and marketing needs the plugins need to be more open and accessible to everyone Plug an alliance and acoustica audio as far as plugins are going to destroy uad it's just a matter of time in about 2 years it's going to happen to them if they don't open up all those plugins

Ave, you didn't mention the unison plugins.. which is why you have the 2 green light channels on the console like the Avalon 737 which is a unison plugin. But not all them are unison.. The unison plugins are what makes these sound cards.. other than that.. whatever.. Also You are not going to benefit from the thunderbolt vs the USB 3.0. I can give you specs.. hit me

I don't think these companies realise they shoot themselves in the foot by cutting corners (no cable) and trying to upsell you before you've even used the item. In a generation the music tech industry is going to be going bonkers - and those that think they're too clever for the consumer today won't be around tomorrow.

Went and got me a Macbook pro 2015 for music. Then find out these UA units use TB3 fml. The Apple flow is just a money harking system.

I think that Universal Audio a good brand but their products are hyper valorated. There is a lots products with the same quality for less money.

No there is not. Upgrade to one of the X and you will understand. You should always invest in your AD/DA converters.

lmao you couldve just picked a cheaper thunderbolt cable. the ones from apple in 1m lenght are 45€ and most third party cables of thunderbolt 3 are the same price range. the costs of yours probably come from its cable lenght

UAD money pit....now... You could invest $4000 into UAD Including Mac And SSL 2+ and Audio tech headphones And then just take your mixes to a big studio and then run it through their gear but that's what you'll have to do if you just have to have uad plugins on your mixdown to make it worth it

@@callepantera If you're watching on firefox or something that doesn't support HDR (or convert HDR to HD). The videos will show green. Sometimes (depending on what encoders your CPU runs) the audio might lag behind too. It's a weird thing with data packets.

Remember the times, when you get a charger + a full functional cable with your new smartphone? Those days are also gone. DSP is a plus But the SSL2 is just as good for $200 And they have there own plug-ins as well There channel strip is the most copied and replicated.
