In this new series, I discuss artists I love that are huge in the UK, but are relatively unknown in the US. Paul Weller, the "Modfather" is a true legend with a spectacular near 50 year career of critical acclaim and massive commercial success, except in the US. Here's his discography with The Jam, The Style Council and his ongoing solo career.

How nice that at least one American recognized Paul Weller's class. That speaks highly of you and your taste in music. Beyond the studio albums, it must be mentioned that perhaps the best Weller song is a live song. The version of "Brand New Start" on "Days of Speed" brings me to tears, no matter how often I hear it. Hats off to you, Paul and Alan!

Never got into Paul Weller, but your Second Conimg t-shirt brought back a flood of memories for me going to the Village every Saturday and hitting all the record shops like Venus, Bleeker Bobs, sounds, vinyl mania, subterranean, Record Runner, rebel records looking for all the latest imports.

Thanks so much - I really appreciate it. You are so right!!!! Trouser Press was AWESOME (I actually still have some of them). And yes, They covered The Jam and other UK bands that got little to no coverage here. Thanks for your fantastic comment. Trouser Press was ahead and pretty unique in it's time - I should have mentioned it. Thanks again.!

What a nice surprise, I've never seen a video featuring Paul before so this is a real treat. When he finished The Jam I was disappointed and was dubious about The Style Council until I heard them and thought Paul Weller is a real clever so and so, changing to that kind of music and doing it so well and then his solo work is of such a high quality also.

Thanks. Totally agree. The style council is the hole in my discography for him but I’ve always liked what I’ve heard. Image was a bit different. I have to get more. He really is a true artist. Different styles but always real good. Thanks again.

What a great idea, Alan. I loved the Jam at the time and I still do now. In those days, at school, we used to borrow albums off each other. I remember carrying home 'Setting Sons', playing it and thinking this is the business. "Snap" - couldn't agree more. Remarkable to think that Paul Weller was so young when they started. Great credit to Bruce Foxton for the bass sound and Rick Buckler who was, and is, a formidable drummer. The Gift is, I believe, by far their worst album. I didn't like The Style Council much, but some of his solo albums are fantastic. David Butterworth

Thanks so much David. Great story - thanks for sharing. The Jam is still my favorite "era" of Weller. It holds up incredibly well. Fantastic band, as you said. What a trio. Style Council is growing on me over the last couple of decades. Weller solo - so prolific - what an incredible talent he is.

Nice one Alan, I was a Jam fan back in the day too, lost track of Weller somewhere in the 80’s. Bought Wild Wood on vinyl last year after seeing excellent documentary about that record. I also picked up a live orchestral album of his, 2 CDs plus DVD which covers songs from his entire career. Looking forward to seeing him play live in Dublin in July

Once again, Alan, you have done a wonderful job presenting a close-up look at the many facets of an artist’s career in a lively and engaging manner. Whether or not one loves the punk-infused pop of The Jam or the soul music- inspired, eclectic sounds of The Style Council, there’s no disputing the size and scope of Paul Weller’s discography, much of which has garnered critical acclaim. Perhaps, one of the greatest “mysteries of music” comes in the form of your question: Why does an individual artist or a band develop a big following in certain parts of the world while being barely known or relatively obscure in other parts (especially when there are no real language barriers and the culture and attitude stemming from the music genre is “pretty much” the same or widely relatable)? It’s a very interesting thing for us music lovers to ponder. Toward that end, your new series targets territory that I have rarely seen explored. I’m looking forward to learning from your upcoming episodes in this series. If one flips the coin, it’s equally interesting (to me, anyway) to examine the bands and artists that are huge in America (e.g. Grateful Dead) but not particularly popular across the pond.

not sure when i first heard of the Jam. Might have been through Wonder Stuff’s cover of That’s Entertainment in mid90s. After watching the doc About the Young Idea I was like I gotta grab some Jam. As weird as it may seem I picked up Snap on CD when I was working on a show in Serbia. Then picked it up on vinyl. That seems to be enough for me. Or so i thought cause like last year i found setting sons for a dollar. im hesitant to start buying their other stuff. anyway awesome history lesson dude.

Hi Alan - yeh its a total mystery why Weller hasnt been more successful in the States. I think Americans (not you Alan) are a queer lot LOLOLOL 🙂 Is he too English maybe - although the Kinks were quite successful in the States? Dont Know - I have 7 or 8 of his CD's.
