Ultimate Buying Guide 3 of 3 - Rigging a highline safely with minimal gear

The most expensive thing you will do slacklining/highlining is buy gear twice. In a perfect world you would buy gear that you can use for both slacklining and highlining. I present an option for an entire setup that would cost less than $1000 and you can do everything with and be able to add to it, rather than outgrow it.
This series is aimed for those who want to slackline AND highline and currently have no gear. My gear wall is not my success, it is my failure. No one needs that much shit! No one sponsors me and I don't sell gear, so I am as gear neutral as one can be (other than I have my personal favorites).
This video is the 3rd of the 3 in this series where we show an example in my backyard of how to rig a highline start to finish with very little gear so you don’t break the bank if you want to do this sport. In our 2nd video, we focus on how to use the gear just as a slackline in the park and the first video is in my studio explaining all the gear options teaching you HOW to buy, not WHAT to buy.
Remember, the cheapest way to slackline is to make friends in “high” places, people that already have the gear and know how to use it. Make a serious effort to find slackers or go to a slackline festival before purchasing anything.

Though the videos are slack/high line specific there is a boat load of simple and honest rigging information to be gleaned. The fasteners and the bolts are applicable to a host of both hobby and work related rigging. Having a clear understanding of the strengths and the weaknesses of them in real world application makes for safer rigging! Thanks to Ryan for all the testing and information.

rad videos! also, I've been using soft shackles on my soft release for over a year with no abrasion (low tension highlines only), just throwing that out there. also, I could sleeve the soft shackle if I was worried about it.

Hi Ryan, have you ever tested a frost knot in webbing made from 8 strands (a bite folded over, and then folded again) with the webbing sandwiched in between. Do you think it would hold more percentage of the webbing mbs as it has a much greater bend radius? Thanks! Tomas from slacklinegranada, Spain

thanks Ryan for all the awesome vids. question, why would you tie of the webbing on the dynamic side but on the static side only use the loops in the webbing? I'd like to use sewn in loops but struggling how to tie off the webbing on that side, in case of an anchor breaks or weblock. thanks

This is a good question that is hard to answer :). What I could do better with this anchor without adding more gear is to tie my rope around tree/bush like I did in park, then use tail to go around tree again independently and go through sewn loop eye to make the connection to the loop redundant and to back up my soft release. Balance community sells sewn loops with an extra loop you can connect to master point, past the soft release, which is an awesome option.

Weblocks upside down puts the tail on top and if the weblock is right on top of the cliff then you want to pull up and back to tighten. Does that make sense. See our rigging example playlist.

I'm curious why you set the frost knot so that the load strand is 3rd from the middle, wouldn't the radius and therefore the strength be the greatest if it was all the way on the outside of the bend of the knot? Is it done to protect the load strand from abrasion?

Because someone did insignificant testing and because it was the only testing done it became doctrine haha. I have tested almost 50 frost knots now and it basically doesnt matter how you do it. All the different ways range so much that they overlap each other. Padding it is ideal more than how you tie it.

rachets are the most common thing to fail and come flying at people. But tricklining has much higher forces. But if stuff fails, things do fly!... or fall :)

Seems the lock is upside down because of the secondary line and primary line are coming out of either sides

That way the primary can be locked off at the bolts and the secondary line can be locked off that the master point. Just an observation I'm not a highliner

At 15:45, if the node (half clove hitch) is under tension, then, equalization is a myth… Therefore, you should not hang it here !

It would never see the whole load since the weblock is still doing something. And if it did the most force a line sees is 6kn and in bolt buster we have learned no bolt breaks below 18 worse case unless there is some serious corrosion you cant see.

I know it's only an example, but the anchor on that tree is not redundant. If the rope gets cut on one strand, everything goes.

That is true... and I just did a highline around a tree last weekend and I used a 2nd rope because of this. I plan on making a 4th video for this "trilogy" to include all the feedback like what you just said here. A better example I could have done is taken the single rope I have and make two independent pieces out of it... eg: two baskets with figure 8s on the end with same rope.

Another option for making redundancy on tree is making another loop around tree with leftover webbing. Sure if u use sewn loops u don't have it but you can also make a knot and take some for this purpose.

i use soft shackle ALLLLL the time EVERY time on the sewn loop of my soft release ALL the time So u can do it more than 'Maybe one time" but yeah, it's no good i guess....

i used to use em on the non loop side of soft release not cause i'm dumb but cause i figured with all those wraps sliding past one another the tension was getting divided by a lot of little friction instances.... u know what i'm saying? i never noticed any evidence of wear during all my time doing it until enough people gave me shit that i stopped and then anyway i got a purelock and didn't need a connector there but yeah man i can see that the trolls r on u whatever they are babies fuckem

chris fox hahaha. I dont pad my soft shackles and other than fading... they are good as new. How many times do you estimate you soft released with soft shackle on "wrong" side? And you had almost no abrasion issues?

yes no padding for me either i probably rigged all soft shackles soft release style iin the park a bit over 100 ' with anchors like 7 ' high w feather like 40 times with no bad scene on the abrasion whatsoever i feel like i could have gone on indefinately if not for people telling me to stop.

chris fox sold! Im going to start doing this. Eventually here i will be doing abrasion test on dyneema because i get SOOOO many questions about rope on rope is bad so why put soft shackles on master points. Im like... "do you tie your leash directly into your harness? Thats what i thought" hahaha. I will do some soft release examples now with soft shackles with some soft webbing and analyze it with "soft"ware ;). Highlining shouldnt be "hard" :)

No lie i really just want to string a rope between two trees under a normal slackline except up high. Will there be just way too much stretch in the rope or why is that probably a really fucking stupid idea? A climbing rope that is

@@jamapell please please dont use ratchets for midlines or highlines. Its dangerous. Just get a weblock and slackline webbing that isnt from a no name china company and make sure it has sewn loop for static side. You can use static rope for backup to answer original question. Watch our "how not to rig midline" episode
