Nice video! One thing to remember here is the 24 and 32 core SOC's have the same coprocessor blocks. Some of your tests are being handled by the custom blocks as opposed to GPU or CPU purely. Things like video encode/decode, ProRes, ProRes RAW and others. The display even has its own custom block for acceleration enabling the smooth and fast ramping up and down in Mhz.

Thanks for running these tests. It's hard to decide! And it's very frustrating because as of right now, late December, if you want a max, you have to wait till possibly the beginning of March for it, probably due to the chip shortage. But from this video I can see that a 24-core GPU would probably be enough for me.

Thanks very much, for this guys. very useful video clearing out the M1 pro VS Max lineup. If i may though .. and i know you’ve made a couple of videos on that already… but i want to point this out as a suggestion : Please do more videos focusing on the stability and ease of usage. I don’t care so much about rendering times, but rather.. how smooth the machine allows me to be while working, either in Logic Pro, or FinalCut / Da Vinci Resolve, Affinity Photo/Design, Rhino, Blender, etc.. Do you know what i mean ? Focus more on the performance WHILE editing, WHILE working. I know i am not alone in this request.. and i also know that you know what i mean, here. Thank you , and best wishes for 2022 ! cheers from Portugal

I have the 16"with the 32core GPU and I use Macs fan control to set the fans higher than apples default fan curve. Even the most taxing things I do which is video editing/sometimes gaming (dying light) the temps never get over 70 degrees, with fans audible but not loud. they should test again with a more aggressive fan curve, it really helps the thermals. (apple should really just make their fan curve more aggressive by default on the 32 core IMHO)

Some remarks/observations: 1) First of all, thanks for a great video, really informative I love it. 2) I was surprised by the difference in performance between Lightroom and Affinity. I never realized that some photo editing programs are using more CPU, others more GPU. Buying more CPU cores then only makes sense if your program uses GPU. 3) the 14 inch on paper can be specced same as 16 inch (an Apple novelty) but in real life, the 14inch will be throttled back significantly more. In other words, if portability isn't your main concern then the 16 inch is the far better option. 4) It would appear that the 400Gb bandwidth of the M1 Max chip plus the double video engines has a bigger impact than I would have thought 5) If one decides on getting 32 Gb, the difference between Pro (16 cores) and Max (24 cores) is only $ 200. Given the performance differences that's an easy choice. On the other hand, if one doesn't need the 32 Gb, then he/she probably doesn't need the 24 cores as the 16 cores will seldomly be maxed out. 6) Hence my conclusion is that IF 16 Gb is sufficient, don't bother with additional GPU cores and buy the base version. If one does require 32 GB, then invest 200 more and you'll have the Max chip 7) This is basically what I have done: I have ordered the 16 inch with M1 Max 24 cores and 32 Gb (silver grey). Once again thanks a million and hope you'll reach your million subscribers soon (today at least one less to go)
@V4D2
@V4D2 2 жыл бұрын
you’re on point with the 5) remark. I have been trying out a 14” base model with Ableton Live, and a LOT of VSTs and the 16Gb of RAM is almost always maxed out, on the yellow line, and i have had times when the Swap Memory usage goes up to almost 10Gb (!). So, i am returning it and saving for a 32Gb 16”machine, that is way more expensive, but relatively speaking, it is cheaper, as you get the 1Tb SSD a bigger battery and a significantly sized up screen. The charger is more powerful too and yes.. the difference from a 10/16 Pro model to the 10/24 Max model is not that big.. so i will probably go for that one as well. cheers from Portugal. ;)

i think for the battery performance test it is better to test all of them NOT by a looping task. Instead, test them with a long one with a specific length. Cus a 32 core working maxed out in 45 mins will definitely have finished A LOT more loops than a 14 core version in the same 45mins.

Thanks for the really informative comparison. I have a quick question. I am getting a 14 inch model with 32 GB ram and 1TB harddrive. I do high-resolution composite landscape photography (200 Megapixels) and edit photos about 30-40 times a year. The rest of my use cases are pretty trivial such as youtube and office etc. How is the battery life if I do not put the machines through this trivial load in everyday use cases in case of 8 Core CPU 14 Core GPU and 10 Core CPU 16 Core GPU. Does the higher configuration model consume more energy, reducing battery life for the everyday trivial load? I am ok to spend the money, my concern is that if I go with the higher-end model M1 pro model then I may end up with shorter battery life in everyday usecases. Thanks so much again for the advice.

could that huge-ish gap between 16 to 24 cores also be attributed to the ram bandwidth also being doubled? m1-pro is 200GB/s the m1-max is 400GB/s. would there even be a way to check and see if that's what's going on there? I thought long and hard, and considering I NEED 1TB minimum i thought the pre-upgraded 14" 10/16core 1tb option was the best value for me. I enjoy the portability and its slightly cheaper than the base 16" but with double the storage. Also we have to consider that much of our time using a computer requires "burst speed". When it comes to burst speed these computers are all pretty much on the same level (opening apps, making adjustments, switching between app). These sustained tests to me are only a small part of the picture. Unless you're rendering footage for an hour a day or doing extreme 3d graphics, i don't think upgrading the GPU's are worth it (unless you're making banks). As for RAM.... i'd only go beyond 16gb if your file sizes are absolutely huge.

If as you speculate that thermal throttling is causing a limit of the benefit of the 32 GPU core machines couldn’t you use the same heat dissipation method used for the MacBook Air you demonstrated to improve its performance similarly for the 32 core SOC? We all would probably like to see that.

Hello, for simplified video editing on Davinci solve, do you recommend the 16-core configuration? Would it be enough if I started merging a bit for titles or 3D renderings? Thank you 🙂👌

Thank you for this video! But iam having the same Base 14inch Macbook (Brand New). But while iam doing Photoshop works iam getting the spinning beachball and also sometimes while iam doing daily tasks i get that beach ball. FYI i even got the spinning beach ball at the Macbook setup once i opened my MBP for the very first time at the language selection window. So is it normal or do i have to do something to optimize my macbook to make it faster? (Its a brand new one recently bought)

Did you use the migration tool to transfer your files to the new one? There tends to be better performance and less issues with a clean install (save old files on an external and transfer what you need and download apps again for example). I don't think there should be many hiccups on the new machine normally.

Hi guys…Trying to figure out the right configuration to work with Twinmotion… I know it in not optimized yet… but switching between Mac for 3d modeling and PC for rendering it is driving me crazy… what I’m sure of is that the 14” with more cores it is not a good idea… but it would be nice to know if the performance it is at list comparable with working with a RX5700XT on PC or it is still closer to the performance I got on my maxed out 2020 MacBook Pro 13” I’m using now… any suggestion would be much appreciated even if it is wait for M2 or for Twinmotion to be optimized for ARM.

This is the info I have been requested for a long time! I think that this is the only channel that does provide this information. My plan was to buy the 16 inch with 32GB ram / 2TB SSD / 16 core GPU. I will use the laptop mostly for music production. But will probably buy the same 16 inch with 32GB ram, but with 1TB SSD / 24 core GPU. An external NVMe or SSD drive of 2TB will cost me about USD250. Btw, this channel deserve 10 millions subscribers!!!!

Hi there, I haven't bought my Mac yet. I need to get a 64 GB machine for some audio projects but for video editing primarily with Premiere Pro, based on the video you published 24 core is doing just fine compared to 32 core however I'm not sure if this video came out before Adobe announced improvement for running Adobe native to M1 Max / Ultra chip. Would you please let me know if this video is older than Adobe update or not, and if it is indeed older, then would you be able to compare 24 core and 32 core based on latest Adobe updates? Thank you.

Question: Does a 16" / 16 cores / 32 of RAM perfirm close to a 16" / 24 cores / 32 of RAM in 3D modeling and rendering usign the swap memory? In my mind maybe the one with 16cores will get some swap memory to use if its needed? Kinda curious. Thanks (:

Hello Max/all, I got on Christmas new MacBook Pro 16,2 inch, 1TB HDD, 16Gb RAM so I did some benchmarks and I was a little bit dissapointed, because my processor has only 2,67 GHz and no 3,2 GHz, how I could see in your videos, do you know, why is my Mac a little bit slower or when can be a problem? I have to mention I am from Czech Republic. Thanks for every answers :).

I am confused by your testing, a little: M1 Max and M1 Pro have different clock speeds to the Memory which may/could account for GPU frequency. In addition the M1 16” MPB has the High-Performance mode[did that make any difference in the models you tested??], but is that feature just with the Max chipset and not the Pro, MPB16” models only? Here is what I have found out: M1 MacMini and M1 13" MBP have 8 GPU Cores that seem to max out at 1000 Mhz Clock Speed. M1 Max 14” MBP w/ 32 GPU Cores seem to max out at 1000 Mhz Clock Speed. In your testing there seems to be a 1300 Mhz Max, Clock Speed. In your testing, is there a difference in the Max or Pro GPU Max Clock Speed? In your testing is the clock speed tied to whether you have a: 14 Core GPU 16 Core GPU 24 Core GPU 32 Core GPU Or M1 Pro with the corresponding GPU Count have different “max frequency”? M1 Max with the corresponding GPU Count have different “max frequency”? … and maybe the limitation is the total clocking capability of that particular SOC can do in combination with the thermal envelope, not just Apple arbitrarily setting a max limit on the frequency of the GPU. Your thoughts? Do you have subsequent test results that are a bit more granular?

Such great videos! I ordered a 16' 32c and I do pro audio. I use a ton of plugins that are CPU heavy. Would the 16' 24c GPU out-perform the 16' 32c GPU on CPU intensive tasks based on "The Geekbench Multi-Core CPU Score 1:30 ??" In other words, how big of a difference is 12,621 vs 12,618?? Is that "3" difference even noticeable? (I don't want to but) Should I cancel my order and wait another month or so to go to a 24c GPU? Battery Life and the Other Benchmarks aside, just wondering CPU. 😅

@@markospolydorou Thanks for the response! Very helpful info! But my time stamp in my comment was referring to to 32c having a 3 point difference in CPU points from the 24c in the multi core benchmark. Was wondering why/ if those 3 points would matter at all as I DO NEED MORE CPU for DAW and audio plugin related tasks.

Their RAM upgrade is slimy. $400 for 16 more gigs. For 32 total. So then they ease people into stepping up into the Max. If you're getting 32GB ram, you might as well get the 24 max.

I would like a more in-depth battery comparison between all of them. I feel like 45 minutes is not enough. Maybe if you can run different tasks for a few hours (not only a benchmark). Run it until the 32core is dead, and then see how much is left in all of the others. Personally i am interested in the 14core base model because of the battery life which i value the most in these machines.

My understanding from a different video is that it does throttle, but only at a 2%-4% penalty. I think they had one app that took a 5% hit, nothing near the 40% that the 32-core takes.

I’m a musician, and use Logic Pro and MainStage frequently. If I bought the 14” base model, but went 32GB (as opposed to 16GB) RAM, will the fans be running hard and noisy frequently? My thought was that it wouldn’t since Logic and MainStage aren’t heavily reliant on graphics, but I’m starting to wonder after having seen this video…
