A lot of old timers used 30-06 back in the day. Worked well back then. Still will work today.

Old school cartridge + old school bullet=success! I really liked the way you placed such an emphasis on being both competent and familiar with your rifle/cartridge of choice. In the end, only hits count and I've seen hunters try to crutch their lack of accuracy with an oversized magnum and the result is a wounded animal. Not a good situation especially with a dangerous creature at close range.

There is nothing wrong with honesty and level headed humbleness. You did very great.. Your guide as well.. Here in Namibia the 30 - 06 has a great reputation as a very capable round.. You proved it.. I've seen a 10 footer drop and not a twitch from 1 round from a 270 Winchester at 100 yards, I've seen bears get 10 rounds from a belted magnums. Depends if you can shoot what you are shooting.

I will always love the 30-06. Powerful, yet manageable.

I heard an interview with an Alaskan outfitter who has been a brown bear guide outfitter for over forty years. He said that he has seen more big bears taken with the 06 than any other cartridge. He did say always premium bullets were used. !! 👍👍

I think a 35 Whelen would make a great brown bear rifle.

'76 Wyoming, I took huge Mule Deer w/old 19th Century sporterized 7mm w/off-hand shot quartering to right, at soon-to-be dead run buck half mile away. Rancher's Son on scope called, "That's a miss", but rancher waited for bullet to arrive when buck tumbled azz over tea kettle. Rancher asked Son, "Hit or miss?" Son shouted, It's a hit Daddy,...and he's down. Got worse when gutting deer, Rancher Ray claimed "His" heart, & it had hole thru center of it! They was busy losin' ranch, so upon our arrival 6 days prior, I had passed hat among hunters for funds to repair combine, 3 grain trucks, tractor, and old pickup. Tractor no-fire & Combine even had main conveyer belt ripped in half, plus blown 305ci motor. Fortunately, both Red Junk (Farmall) so no demand for needed parts at equipment dealer for years & found everything we needed including Chevy 327 motor. Hunter had assigned 16 year old son to me, (10 years my younger), so dealer gave price of $200, & we pulled parts before he changed his mind! I forgot also needed front tire for tractor as well, and Dealer said if could pull parts that day, we could have pair of like new tires for it for $25. As we left, Dealer asked if Ray would lose his wheat crop? I said, "Not if we can help it"!! Ray had young real Indian lad helpin' w/ranch, so he spoke to his Dad & Uncle, & here came couple strong tribal Braves they'd sent over. Wow, what a Chief send!!! There were many thousand acres of wheat waiting, so we really hopped to!! Finished combine's engine swap, then swapped out all the belts, to find Dad had repaired a grain trucks engine, & got load of fuel brought out with last of our money. Dad operated Combine & helper drove truck for grain, while rest of us whammed out necessary repairs, & even got old pickup's dump box workin', w/new sides and all. We had 4 trucks on haul!! End of 3rd day harvesting, Dad pulled Combine in barn, and before he'd come out, it started snowing!! Next day was 1st day of season when bagged above mentioned buck. After 5 days straight of very strenuous labor, I was exhausted. At 26 should have been in better shape, but I wasn't. Mrs. Ray cooked up noon meal special for me, & it was lights out until middle of next morning. Rancher Ray said we had company, so got my schtuff together and met the local Indian Chiefs. Ray's Helper had spilled his guts to 'em about that half mile shot, so they was there to ask for help w/huge Grizzley threatening their Tribal Members. I humored 'em, but couldn't believe Grizzlies grew that big. They said had tried hunting it, but claimed Bear even ate Shy Anne, and immediate my guy hot blood boiled...the nerve of that bass turd!! I wanted to ice that sucker, but told 'em no can do as out-of-state permits not unavailable now, and local Johnny Law would run jme into jail in a heartbeat. Older Chief pulled his County Sherrif's Badge out, and Brother pulled his Tribal Conservation Director Badge, and I was Trumped. I told them would have to do it at night, w/big bonfire on Tribal Grounds, or it would be a no-go...& although we'd be good friends, I wasn't gonna cut my hand so we could be Blood Brothers! They had a good laugh at my expense, with Older Chief tellin' Rancher Ray I had watched too many movies, as weren't gonna be cuttin' their hands either! I felt like a complete wuss, but both Chiefs chanted and patted my rifle handing it back to me. Conservation Director Chief said had agreed to protect me, but I stated I was still gonna take it along with me! All was ready that evening, & Braves had cut shtload of wood. I was dropped off on other side of bear's territory and tramped thru the place to really piss 'em off, then lit my fire setting up inside half moon of big limbs driven into ground by Braves. Looked like a no-go, but at 1:15, here he comes, circled around fire area stopped w/perfect silhouette, BANG, & he dropped right there. I held tight, even though colder that a witches...well you know, but couple hours later equally huge Grizzley came down his brothers tracks. He was very very cautious, but stopped to sniff bro's head, and BANG, he dropped right there. Two perfect head shots, not waiting for three, so blew the hell out of my rape whistle! By quarter after four AM, half the tribe had shown up! Older Chief had 20th Century Fox with him who had warmed soup for me and Thermos of coffee too! She split though, so mentioned to Chief, "Looks like an excellent place to be The Chief, as she's quite a gal!! Chief started to tear up sayin', she's not my Wife, but was my Daughter-in-Law until Grizzley ate my Son. He was 11th out of 12 Cheyanne Braves to be eaten by Bear. I never did see Shy Anne who the bear had allegedly ate as well!! With Sister fetched, I was warmed for best part of hour, with camper's heater helping a bunch as well. Back at our Motorhome, I thought I could get some sleep with folks out hunting, but at 8am couple wild Indians bangin' on the door. Invited 'em in for coffee and told how sht was gonna be! Seein' as these guys owned the town of Cheyanne, main drag was backeraded & closed off for festival. All these Indians had their own merch set up for the Tourist Trade, & this "Killed the Bear Festival" was gonna be a money maker!! They had Gals that could sew there, so whipped me out buckskin outfit, put Indian colored makeup on me, gave me moccasins, plopped full War Bonnet on my head, and told me not to say a word. First day ever for me to keep a straight face!! Folks was back from another fruitless day of huntin', they flipped on tele, there was this big Festival up town, I was frickin' gone, & there they were!! Screw home cookin' as they was goin' out & heard they spent over $30 eating there!! They hit the display with 2 older Chiefs and the Tribe's Great Hunter w/both huge Grizzlies for backdrop. It cost 'em $40 bucks to have their photos taken with them (us). After photos taken, Mom exclaimed, "Our Son has a rifle just like that"! Older Chief asked, "Is he a good shot"? She answered, "He was taught to shoot by a Gangster when only two, and haven't seen him miss yet! Chief said, "When next time you see him, you may ask him if he would like to join our tribe, I am sure he would be welcome!! Mom said would pass that along, & when returned at 1AM, that's the 1st thing she told me, and oh yeah, she could hardly wait to see the photos she'd ordered!!! Although Mom great shot, I couldn't say she was Great Hunter, because that was me!!

I just finished reading North American Head Hunting by Grancel Fitz. Imo, a very good read. He used the 30-06 to take all North American big game, including an Alaskan Brown Bear. That was almost 70 years ago, well before the advancements in the powders & projectiles we have now.

My Winchester model 70 XTR 30/06 loves 200 gr. Partitions. I'm ladder testing. So far I'm safely at 2450 fps.

I'm a sucker for the venerable .30-06. It was my first "deer rifle"... given to me by my now deceased grandfather. So anytime there is talk about the cartridge my ear prick up.... especially in a woodstocked model 700, like mine. It also helps that its a good all around caliber. Its got enough punch, not too heavy recoil, good frontal diameter, and still fast enough to reach out at distance if need be

30-06 still works.

I’ve met so many hunters who have not only missed, but also had a very detailed list of reasons why, to include sun in their eyes, bad ammo, etc.. For him to not only admit to missing (by 3 feet no less!) but to not offer an excuse tells me everything thing I need to know about his character. Excellent video and presentation!

338 Federal in a short handy rifle for Browns is what I use. Peninsula bears in the spring or fall when it's open. Shots generally in the 50 yard range.

Great video Guy! Anyone that doubts the 30-06 missed their history class. I have taken to Grizzlies and one Alaskan Brown Bear. All with a 340 Weatherby Mag. All with multiple shots. On the Brown Bear I shot the right front shoulder. The guide shot the left front shoulder and it took a 3rd to finish it Nice Bear!

I love the videos on this channel partly because the information is delivered in a very calm, relaxing, and conversational manner. Which makes it all the more jarring when, at the end of the videos, you get dropped into an auditory assault completely incongruous with the tone of the video up to that point.

hitting a vital area is the key. a .270 will work w right loads. second shots matter in a pinch as well.

I was listening to an interview with a professional guide in Alaska, he killed an 800 pound bear who attacked his fishing clients with a 9mm pistol. He also said he guided a bear hunter with a 270 and killed it with one shot. Proper bullets and shot placement is everything.

I'm a BIG fan of both the 30-06 & the .375 H&H...That said, i have killed a coastal brownie & an Alaska-Yukon moose w/ the .375 H&H. My rifle is a 'vanilla' Whitworth Mauser w/ the old long tube 1.75-6x Leupold scope. Barrel has been Mag-Na-Ported (4- port slots) and wears a black Pachmeyer Declerator recoil pad. Ammo was 300gr Fail Safe bullet pushed by RL15 . One shot broadside behind the shoulder @ 144yd. Bear ran about 60-70 yd in waist high grass, we heard the "death moan/wail" then waited 10 min before following up .... Bear was a boar that was just shy of 9 feet . Hunt was in Sept of 2004. Never killed anything bigger than whitetail w/ the '06 but would NOT hesitate to hunt moose or brown bear using the 200gr Partition in the '06 .

Really enjoyed your video. Made a lot of sense. I don't currently own a 30-06, but I love them. I have a 7mm rem mag, but I truly believe a 30-06 would easily do anything I needed to do.

Proper loaded bullet and powder with a reliable firearm and shot placement. Be comfortable and trust your rifle, load, and yourself to perform at critical and stressful situation.

Awesome story Guy. Being humble in admitting the excitement led to the miss shows your character. I had that happen on a huge white tail buck. Probably the biggest buck I have seen in our area. Dont know wether or not I will ever go bear hunting but i have the old tried and trued 06, a 7 rem mag and I am currently thinking of building a 338/06 for an elk hunt. I cant take the beating on my broken down shoulders anymore to take anything more powerful even with a good muzzle break or suppresor.

30/06 for that criterion speaks for itself. I’d also like to add the 300WSM as I have one in the A Bolt 11 Stainless Stalker shooting 180gr Barnes TTSX bullets. It’s a light rifle and accurate to boot. Thanks for sharing!

We were on the Sag River at the boat launch, here is an outer-state hunter up here for caribou and the big ‘B.’ The bear charged him and with his 375HH magnum under ten feet, put a round into the bear’s head, and he watched the bear's head expand outward and finally come to a stop 2/3 feet from him. He was still shaking. Six trips saw grizzlies on every trip, even one within 8/10 feet from our tent. Big paw!

Back in the late 90's, I requested 300gr .338 bullets from a maker...who promply asked "why?". He explained that the only people who has requested such a thing were from Alaska using a necked down 338/416 Rigby... My answer. The 338 Lapua, which started development from the 416 Rigby necked down, but was then available in factory form. Intended use was Brown Bear & Bison. He replied "Oh, that makes sense..." As I really hadn't done anything new, and guides were already using it in such a manner....it made sense. The Lapua pushes the 300gr bullets to 2825fps...thats 5315 ft/lbs with a SD of .375....Using a bonded round nose.

Great presentation and commentary. I have used a 300 Win Mag precisely to have an extra 100 yard range over an 06 for many years, but only because I hunted 'bean field' Whitetails where the range can go long from the get go. I have a 375 H&H I got for big bear, but being much older now, I probably couldn/t it carry too too far. Years ago my older brother fished Alaska/Canada and had with him an old Britsh SMLE 303. He stocked it with 215 grain soft points and a few 175 grain FMJ's. He later had a custom 30-06 made off a Springfield action, and felt very comfortable in the field should he cross paths with bears.

I lost count of the stories, footage, and firsthand witness accounts of hunts that go bad because of one small detail or another. "It's the gun... It's was the caliber... It was the shot placement..." And so on. Truth is, it will always be the hunter's fault a hunt went bad in one way or another. Every detail matters, and it is up to the hunter to select what to use, and prepare for at even the finest detail. Including what oil to use on your rifle for the climate you were in. Good stuff!

17:17 Excellent presentation Guy, well done. I would certainly never argue against the .30-06. And like you i am blessed to have options. If i knew it would only be 50 yards, like your situation, my 95 Winchester in .405 sounds fun, but hunting doesn't work like that, as you pointed out, and my eyes aren''t as good with a peep as they used to be. One of my .375's? good choice, but i dont shoot them as well, and as fast as my .338's. Stainless. 340 Weatherby, hard to ignore, but kind of big and heavy (trust me it needs to be) and kicks more like a .375. Ok down to two, both custom Mauser 98's. First one is bullet proof, synthetic stock, durable coating on metal work, 1-4 S&B scope, caliber. 375 Whelen improved, which i have been very impressed with. Think 9.3x62 ballistics plus a little more. It shoots 270 grain bullets right at 2,500 fps with Reloader 15, well done deal right? Oh wait, where's my ammo? Probably not going to find spare ammo for that, lol. So last one, another Mauser custom, in a Stutzen or Mannilicher style..338 Winchester, 22 inch barrel, 8.6 lbs with a 3-9×40 Trijicon Accupoint on it. Balances and handles like a fine shotgun, shoots ragged holes with Nosler Partitions and IMR4831, yep, thats the one. Probably a little to pretty for Alaska, but hey, its the hunt of a lifetime right? And as a very wise old gunsmith once said to me. "Who you saving it for? Use it!" So .338 for me,.... but then there's my Stainless. 30-06................😅 If i ever get a chance to go 😅 Congratulations on a fine bear Sir, well done!

I had argued debate with some people online about hunting and defense for bears, both black and brown / grizzly. I said 30-06 a good universally hunting rifle for medium to large and to bigger game. They told me I was dumb or didn’t know what was talking about. Thanks for information and help prove my point

Have an old Savage 30-06 Model 510 made the year I was born, 1975. Shoots like crap and the trigger is a stiff 5 lbs, but I still like it. If I could find a good trigger to put on it, I’ld re-barrel it and put it back to work. Nice bear Guy.

I have to say, I've been thinking about this all day. I am very envious. Congratulations on a fine bear. It's gorgeous. Several years back, I started buying pieces to build each of my nephews bolt action rifles with swappable barrels. I went with 6mm Remington on the low end and 338-06 on the high end, with the thought that would be sufficient for anything in North America. They could always add 270, 280, or 30-06 if they wanted something in-between later. The 6mm Rem in a long action allows for longer, heavier, higher BC bullets that can leverage the additional case capacity. The 338-06 would be heavier and larger, but less recoil than other 338s. I figured the heavier projectiles are best within 300 or 200 yards, but the lighter ones could be used out to 400 or even 500 yards. I still think 338-06 is a great option, but I have a new appreciation for what the 30-06 can do.

I don't have a whole lot of hunting experience beyond varmints, but I know what the various calibers can do. And I've been a firm believer in 30-06 as an absolute do anything sort of round, and until this video it wouldn't have been my first choice for a grizzly. This is wonderful information. Thank you sir. On a funny note my Late father would have just said "I'm not hunting grizzly with anything other than a p-47d Thunderbolt because it's got 8 m2 Browning .50 caliber machine guns mounted in the wings". Dad was not interested in anything that can hunt you as well as you hunt it. In his defense he agreed with 30-06 being a solid do anything round and that it off the top of his head wouldn't have been his first choice but that it certainly wasn't a bad choice. I’ve got hundreds of rounds of 375H&H experience. My suggestion is 235gr Barnes TSX with a stiff charge of IMR4064. That combination is devastating for any large dangerous bear. It has higher velocity than 200gr 300WM and more energy than 338WM. Recoil is manageable

I used to shoot my 458-win mag a lot to get used to the recoil. After training with that a lot anything less than the 458. I knew I was going to be able to shoot very well. My favorite rifle is my Remington 700 375 H&H custom rifle.

The same people that tell you the 30-06 is outdated will tell you the 1911 sucks and a 12 gauge doesn’t work for home defense . The 30-06 round has been taking grizzly’s for a century now and it still viable today

People who think 6.5cm isn't enough for deer have either never used one or are unwittingly commenting on their marksmanship.

Excellent presentation! I agree in all respects. Accuracy is much more important than horsepower. Very much enjoyed the hunt from right here at home, and got that nervous thrill when nobody knew where the bear was. Yes, it was definitely time to chamber a round!

Good video Guy - I could see where you were going with this just looking at the selection you have on the table. I've shot a few large bears with a 45-70 and and let me tell ya what.. I'd rather shoot one with a 6.5 PRC and a solid / bonded bullet than the 45-70 with the Hornady FTX (Cup and core). Of course the 45-70 with a good bonded or hard cast bullet will not have the issues of the Hornady design - I've come to the conclusion that the X in ELD-X and FTX stand for eXplosive. After using the Hornady bullets in reloads for quite some time after seeing the real world performance on game I'm slowly reworking everything except my pest control rifles to run the Barnes LRX.

I have an old Savage 110e that I always gravitate back to during deer season just because it is a lights out shooting rifle with my handloads. For me it is a easy shooting rifle and although I have never hunted a bear whether I would have no qualms about doing so😊

To 'go less' with a Grizzly is more like what people 'actually' used to use back in the day - 30-06 and 35 Remington was it before the 35 Whelen was wildcatted, unless you could afford the 375 H&H. A 35 Remington in the model 8 was originally a Grizzly gun - but the bullets then not great same as the 30-06 back then....35 Remington Buffalo Bore with the 220gr Speer would do it. Its basically 358 Winchester territory at thst point. Everyone thinks you practically need motars and grenades, but the reality is if you can stalk and get in close enough range (where most hunters fail) without setting off the adrenaline and get off a well placed shot....

Thanks for the great info, the 30-06 is a good choice for a 200 yard shot, but when the environment changed to heavy brush and willow where the bear did show itself at close range, 50 yards, wouldn’t a .375 be better? I’m reading Jim Corbett going after big cats in brush and he retreats and switches from his .275 Rigby to his 450/400?

Best all around rifle is my 30.06. My 6.5 Creedmoor and my 450 bushmaster and 10mm carbine all do the job anywhere anytime. Unless elephant..hippo or rino. I've always said great ammo and shot placement is what matters. But would have 10mm or 44mag hardcast pistol on my chest holster as backup. Never go in the woods unprepared.

Oh boy. I'm usually a less is more when it comes to hunting rifles/ cartridges etc, but big brown bears is where i might draw the line on that way of thinking. I know it's been done with everything down to 22lr but I'm thinking 300wm minimum and 375 ruger preferably maybe? That being said I'll probably never hunt big brown bear and if i ever shot one it would be in self defense. So it would be with a side arm that carried less energy than a 243 ironically.

Never hunted grizz but I do have a custom built 340 Weatherby ( Rem 700 action,magnaported stainless barrel,HS precision stock) That rifle gives me a little more confidence when I see some big bear tracks. 250 gr partitions at 2950 fps is a substantial load but takes practice to get used to the recoil and even hand loading that practice is expensive! Lol 😅

Well done Guy ! I’ve never hunted the big bears but am of the mind to go heavy if I did. Harry Selby, Robert Ruark’s PH, said “Use enough gun.” Rural wrote a book by that name. Different time but sound advice. The animals that can kill you were hunted with sharp sticks back in the day. I was always the last guy in the group. I had the biggest damn pointy stick I could make.

A 308 Win. fan I feel confident the 180gr Norma Alaska round will handle anything on the North American Continent. Putting three rounds in the black at 100 meters with the 308 is no problem. Balistic wise there is little differacne between Big Brother 30-06 and Little Brother 308, the positive for the 308 is a wider variaty of weights + no shortage... it being a NATO round.

Always shot placement issue: if I correctly remember the Kodiak’s brown bear record has been taken by a 30-06 in the 50´s even if I would prefer my 375 H&H for this hunt…

Great video! I really give you credit! You admitted missing your first shot. Most would not admit it! What kind of velocity were you getting with those 200 gr. Noslers in an 06?

I don’t know why someone would think a 30-06 isn’t a viable bear cartridge.. I’ve seen bears dropped pretty easily with even smaller 30 caliber cartridges. And smaller calibers overall.

In 1996 I was up on the Yukon River out of Russian Mission, about 13 miles above the village on a huge island with a field right in the middle shaped like a football. It is on maps so look it up. I was hunting for moose with four VPSO's Village Public Safety Officers (village cops). We got there just before light, and I walked through skunk cabbage that was taller that my 5'7", to the edge of the field. The grass came up to my eye level. Two of the men went to the left to cross the field along the left, and two to the right. This field is over a mile in length and 3/4 in width. I watched for three hours as my guys on the right never went anywhere. After this time, they started to come back. We met at the boats. They were white as ghosts. Now, these men are 100 % Alaska Native, and quite brown from the sun, but they were white. They told me they'd spooked a bear off a gutpile from a previous hunters' moose. It wouldn't leave, and kept charging them every it heard them move. They could see it coming for them as the grass would part like the bow wave of a boat. But they never saw the animal. One had a .243, the other a .270. They had the rifles off safety, pointed towards where they would see the bear hit the ends of their barrels; they'd have one shot each exactly, before it would be on them. Now these guys had seen the elephant several times in their careers, they didn't get ruffled easily. They admitted they were scared. But eventually the bear got tired and took off. So: would you rather have a small-bore, or a big-bore? As Arthur B. Alphin said, "God is on the side of the man with the bigger bullet". Carry the biggest rifle you can shoot well. If you have an easy shot with a .416 Rigby or .458 Lott, hit behind the head in the neck. If you are in the deep grass....you want to be ready for the worst possible situation because Murphy is always watching.
