Thanks for sharing! The first thing that came to my mind to make the pump be *MUCH* quieter is to firmly attach a container filled with loose lead shot to the pump itself, then isolate the pump + weight from the structure of the van with foam cushion/very flexible fuel line/etc. That will *DRASTICALLY* reduce vibrations being amplified. Another route is to pick up one of these actual silent pumps that a fellow in the UK makes: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/frWGidJ8s5vXnac.html (Email to contact the maker in the description.) Cheers!

I know it's not recommended, but my solution has worked for the last 3 years and I can barely hear the pump. It is just to replace that stiff fuel line with model aircraft silicone rubber tubing all the way up to the short back hose that comes with the pump. The pump is suspended with silicon fuel line rubber as well. Once my enclosure is replaced it's peace no ticking. My fuel run is 2 meters. Keep up the good work.👍👍

The ticking sound is being transmitted via longitudinal waves along those hard plastic Diesel tubes/hoses. If you want to avoid this you need to build a loop at input and output and hang the pump loosley together with those loops so it can swing freely.

The new pump is definitely quieter. Even if folks don't think the difference is worth the 30 pounds, you now have a spare pump. I would think the pump would be one of the more common items to fail / wear out and with a spare already in hand, it is now a no worries situation. Thanks for Sharing and Cheers from San Diego.

Hi Mel, nice video👍. I suspended my standard pump under the van from a short piece of thick rubber (a peice of a floor squeegee) about 4" long and, once it reached temperature, you just can't hear it at all inside the van, not even in the dead of night! Even when its getting up to temperature the clicking is only faint. I can send pics if interested?

Hi Mel, next time you remove the pump, use brake line clamps to squeeze the rubber tubing, then no air in the system or spillage, or having to 're prime the pump. Great vids keep it up.

If I had a little "grizzly" wood heater like that I doubt I'd ever use the diesel heater :-) You are right - the "tick" is much more subtle and peaceful. In fact could soothe me to sleep.

The foam cases sold online also help reduce the sound. Using a rubber band to suspend it will also help reduce the sound transmission more than the zip ties.

Hi Mel, it is a tad quieter, but I wouldn't say 'ultra' quiet and certainly not £30 quieter. Although the ticking didn't bother me too much in my T4, I experimented with sound insulation. The best method I found is to build a box out of 20mm softwood big enough for the pump to fit in and pack it loosely with that cheap foam flooring underlay. Then I hung the box with rubber cords scavenged from an old bungee. By the way, your lighting is much better.

Definitely quieter. For those interested in quieting the motor by boxing it in remember density is what deadens sound. A metal or plasterboard box will deaden the sound far more than any kind if foam or fibre. Pvc is surprisingly good too, and of course suspend rather than fix to any solid surface.

Nice work and good to see you got a result. If possible, I recommend placing the fuel metering pump outside the van - on the underside close to the fuel tank. And as Johannes said, it's also about hard surfaces transferring the noise of the magnetically charged piston action. That equates to the rubber mount you have in place for the pump and additionally, soft mounting the hard fuel line leading from the pump to the heater injector. This hard fuel line cannot be substituted for a soft line on the discharge side of the pump, as its hardness maintains the pump pressure - so your stuck with that. On the safety side of things, I'd also recommend not placing the heater in a location that obscures direct access to, or sight of the unit (often caused by attempts to isolate the noise of the fuel pump by enclosing the unit) and have a serviceable fire extinguisher within the van at all times. Thanks for the good work and keep them coming.

Wrap bubble wrap around the pump, put the wrapped pump in a box and fill the box with expanding foam. Then fix the box to the wall with screws going through rubber grommets. If the pump ever needs changing you can just pull of the foam off and the pump will still be clean inside the bubble wrap.

Hi Mel...by their design it's a metal piston twacking against a metal face to get the dose, you'll always get a tick until they change the design and maybe put a rubber(or something) face inside the pump, I have mine mounted underneath my van, suspended on thin rubber bungees, so much quieter inside 👍 Great vid to start discussions 🤙

Just watched your vid. I think the new pump may be a few dB quite, but the bigger difference in sound comes from the frequency/pitch. It’s totally silent and safe as the pumps don’t run hot. Then use your cable tie like I do to suspend it. Your be amazed. You see films were pillows are used to silence gun fire. Same principle. 😀

Hi Mel the pump noise also resonates along the hard nylon fuel pipe... So anything the pipe touches also amplifies the noise! This is best damped by sleeving both pump and pipe in soft foam pipe insulation such as armour flex and not P clipping it to the van structure! Try it!

I did it very simple to ours. Use a car radiator hose. I am into the automotive sector. So i could get one what perfectly fits around the pump. Only the connector part could not fit. Put at the other site whats is free another thick rubber hose into the bigger one so that a lot of the pump is covered with rubber. Big difference according old situation. You can hear it ofcourse but a huge difference than before and at a very comfy level. Think simpel…..

In a similar vain, 2 of mine are in short pieces of lead waste pipe, with a heavy white fiberglass(i think) insulation stuffed in the ends, and suspended from rubber hangers, which dropped the noise level a fair bit. Another system has a pump that was claimed to be quieter, bought from heatport(new zealand) called a type E (22mls/SKU: HP-10788 Brand: HEATPORT), which makes a similar difference to the one shown here, so thinking i will try a lead case on it next as well. Also going to try a lead pipe muffler, as using a 1m length on my old Chinese 5kw diesel generator, shut it up considerably.

Definitely more quiet. Discant up noise is more around than old knocking. Also the bottom sound is lighter with thinner ambience!

there is no high pressure side on the pump also it should be outside underneath away from sleeping areas.

I ended up wrapping that recycled rag insulation around pump then dropped down inside box housing above heater. Only at night when quiet could i hear pump, but not usually on.

£16 on ebay, Jan 23, but, like you say, is it worth the messing. Great video Mel. I'd have used kitchen towel/paper and binned it. Save on the washing.

The new pump definitely has a nice tick and not a clack like the old one.

Hi Mel, you been watching willswhereabouts! Mine is outside on a Ducato forward of main fuel tank with sender on main tank and suspended like yours but also double suspended using the rubber mount as well with cable ties, can’t here it at night all. I have seen some channels where they have made a sound proof box suspended with para cord inside the box and silent coat lined, worth a try. Love the channel better than mainstream prime-time TV

Hey buddy, yeah new one is slightly quieter than the old, though the proof in the pudding would be does it resonate through your pillows while sleeping, and only two people can confirm that, your good self and the better half Becky, all the best mucca

It’s a little quieter. Try using sound deadening Materials to encase it.

From the audio samples provided, the old one is definitely louder.

New one is quieter, and a lower note too.... Your call on if it's worth the 30 notes Mel!

It sounds a little bit quieter but if you can sleep with it on with the old pump and want to save $30 go for it Personally my all-in-one 8 kW Chinese diesel heater the pump actually puts me to sleep kind of reminds me of a clock ticking after a while I don't even hear it which is kind of Funny It's usually the time I have the most problem sleeping is my 1st night back in the Van after I'd been on some hometime trying to get reused to the sounds again

I wrapped my drinking water pump in my sprinter with foam from a thick yoga mat. It quieted it a lot. I would do the same with yours.

Going by your audio clip, I will agree the clicking isn't as sharp as before. Therefore, I'd call this a success!
