Adventures with a Very Small Lathe

Күн бұрын

Life is full of change at the moment. With my house up for sale, and my workshop in storage I have to find new ways to practice my hobby, and make videos. For the next few months we're going to be doing things a bit differently at Adventures with a Very Small Lathe.
My new project will be cleaning, restoring, and learning to use a Unimat SL, a very small hobby engineers lathe which I can easily work on in a tiny temporary space.
Many thanks to Paul at The Knackler's Workshop for his series on a similar lathe. He really helped me know what I was getting myself into, and where to start. If you're impatient to find out more, go and watch his series while you wait for more videos from me.

I have one of these, they are fun but simple. Tapers can be done but are setup from the spindle. Remove the little pin under the label on the spindle, this indexes roughly parallel. To unlock, there's an allen bolt under the large pulley. Loosen to rotate the spindle or if you want you can back out the bolt more and pull off the spindle to fit the riser or use it as a drill press with that extra bar that was included. The spindle is currently locked by the two bolts either side of the handle with the pinion , loosen them and the pinion will allow for the spindle to move. Not sure if it's in the box, but yours appears to be missing the spring that would support the spindle when vertical, it should be between the spindle housing and the pulley.

Hello, I have one of these machines too. Only with the newer motor which has a plastic carcass and is not so prone to overheating "they" say. It is a very versatile machine, but it is not very rigid. One has to take very light cuts when turning. And when milling one notes this lack rigidity even more. But in the end ts all about knowing your machine, any machine, and respect its limitations. There is one thing I would really recommend you to do, when all is clean and ready for putting together again (if your machine is of the zamak alloy type too like mine): It is an absolute must to fit a brass or delrin washer to every one of the three hand wheels in order to separate the aluminium hand wheel from the zamak body. These two material have a nasty tendency to gall and bind, and I remember the first times this happened to me, and the cross slide was "frozen" in place, I was looking for the fault in the cross slide thread and the lead screw (imagine my terror). But I eventually found out, that it was the hand wheel and the body of the lathe with some lone chip in-between causing the problem. Once I fitted some brass washers the problem never produced itself again. Giving the hand wheels more slack to overcome the problem would only give you more back lash as the design already has... better go for the washers. Greetings from the north of Spain.

That is a nifty looking lathe. Will be interesting to see what you do with it. I do know of a person who owned one of these lathes. He is capable of machining to such high tolerances it makes the mind boggle. He attributes it to working with this lathe and it's rubbery tendency. He stated that at higher precision heavy industrial equipment reacts the same way as this lathe does. Interesting to think.

A few thoughts: The motor is way to big but it will allow you to part wood/brass/aluminum while the original lathe motor is too week to do that. The unimat angle turning is done by releaseing the positioning pin and the spindle/motor-mount locking screw. Then you just tilt it to the desired angle and turn. Of course this means you have lost concentricity and you will have to re-adjust it. The milling tool post (the heavy steel bar) is used to turn the lathe into a mill. As a mill the unimat is far less rigid than as alathe. As a mill its round bar will easily cause you to loose your concentricity and position - but the extra mounting block for the bar is brilliant. I'm guessing you could mount a second unimat motor/spindle setup and turn the unimat into a compound lathe/mill machine. Enjoy...

I would like to see how you can improve the precision, and reduce inaccuracies like backlash and slop, in old machine tools such as this. In terms of projects, something clockwork would be lovely.
@campbellmorrison8540
@campbellmorrison8540 2 жыл бұрын
Yep me too, I had one of these and gave up on it. The backlash in the carriage and the slop in the rails made it impossible to mill anything and even as a lathe it really struggled to give a good finish with accuracy. It was a good starting lathe but I now have an Emco V10 and its much more useful in my opinion. As far as I could see there was no way to fix/adjust the carriage on the SL so I will be very interested to see how this progress's.

Thanks for the tip! Now you mention it, I did see that video, but it was before I was familiar with the Unimat. It looks like he the compound work by offsetting the tool holder to one side, meaning there doesn't have to be enough height for a toolpost on top of the compound. Nice trick!

To gain more height/swing (3/4") and to clear your motor housing Emco provided a head stock raising block (part #1311). This would also create space for a compound slide (#171190 for the unimat 3/4/PC that probably could be adapted). To raise the tailstock a 3/4" thick block (thicker to start with to accommodate for the 4 holes to drill/ream, then cut halfway those holes) would compensate for the higher headstock. Look here for an example: www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/tail-stock-riser-for-unimat-lathe-db200-sl1000-6 Anyway, great project you've got there! I own and use it's bigger brother; the Emco Compact 5 and love it to bits!

Sure, though you'll have to do your own currency conversion. Unimat SLs come up pretty regularly on eBay and usually sell for £300-£400 for complete machines in good condition. Packages with accessories also come up, and can sell for quite a bit more. I bought this one for somewhat under £300, as it's not complete and needs a bit of restoration, but it did come with the milling/drilling attachment, the solid base, and the much better motor.

It doesn't look that pretty, probably because the wiring is pretty old, but it absolutely makes sense. Combined with the solid base, it upgrades the lathe to handling heavier work, with a harder duty cycle. I've read that the original Unimat SL motor can't be run continuously, and needs to be stopped frequently to cool down. No such problem with this motor, as long as the housing allows enough air flow.
