Julie is such a nice doll! She’s pretty high tech for the time she was built!

Yes. She is. I can’t remember if I mentioned it in the video, but she can tell light from dark, and hot from cold. When she is cold, she will say something like, “Burr! It’s getting cold!“ Or “do you think it’s getting warmer?“ I don’t know where this temperature sensor is but I’d really like to put it to the test. If I can find it, I will show the results of my research in another video. I already know she has a pretty interesting sensor on her stomach, but that will have to keep until the next video.

Got recommended your channel. Very relaxing atmosphere. Can’t believe Julie was released in the 80s! She’s older than I am and far more high tech than I expected

Hi, Lily! Thank you so much for watching! Yes. Julie is surprisingly high tech for her era. Even her ability to sense hot and cold is pretty good. I took her outside when it was around 40° and she goes, “Bir! Is it getting colder?“ Then I took her back inside to my laundry room where the dryer was going. After about 10 minutes of talking about ice cream and cake and what have you, she says, “ is it getting warmer?“ It isn’t instantaneous like modern temperature-measuring devices but it’s still pretty neat. I haven’t noticed her reactions to light and dark. I will cover all of these more subtle features in the next video about Julie. I want to see how all of them work myself.

It's kind of like a choose your own adventure book. Julie looks sleepy.

This was my first Julie. I think her eyes only opened about halfway.

@@crazyrobotlady3391 It's a little bit more than half, but it gives her a very relaxed look.

Julie is a pretty creative robot doll. 'Worlds of Wonder' really put a lot of thought into this toy. One can get the illusion of attachment to this robot as it does interact. That surprises me. I guess the doll is meant to be as active as children are but adults, maybe too much. There must be a sleep mode or something to end conversation,.. I would think....Hope you win those parts off ebay.

Hi, Dalek! Perhaps it was very unwise for me to announce to the world that I was bidding on those items. I’ve already lost one of them and there are around eight hours left on this auction. Hopefully nobody will jump in and steal the other one. So far no one has touched it, but that could change in the last hour before the auction ends. Man, wish me luck. Anyway, she doesn’t seem to have a sleep time. There’s no way that I can tell her to “go to sleep“. She will say, “is it bedtime?“ And if I tell her, yes, she will yawn, but then immediately start yapping again. I suppose that’s why they gave her an off button as well as an on button. Lol! Thanks for watching, as always!

Thank you! Take a look around, and if there are any more robots, that you see on the channel that you are interested in, comment on that video, and if you would like, I can do a further video of that robot provided I still own it.

Thank you. Sorry for the random vintage doll video. KZfaq offers really strange recommendations sometimes. I have discovered a few channels that way myself. Never in my life did I think I would be interested in seeing some Scottish guy trim cows hooves, but now I am a loyal subscriber of @the hoof GP.

I see what you mean about stilted conversations. Hmm, I wonder if the instructions give advice on how to interact. Can you use OCR to read the instructions, and maybe even her book, since I doubt she'll read it aloud, even if she could them. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Hi, Heather! Yes. I did use OCR to read her instructions, but they are very vague. I guess they were written more for a child. They tell how to insert her batteries, how she can sense light and dark, hot and cold, wether she is being picked up and carried somewhere, how to get her to read her book, and how to get her to recognize your voice but beyond that, they don’t give a lot of detail about how to interact. Apparently the only way to get her conversation to move along is to say “OK“. There are also questions that (when she asks you) you don’t really have the option to answer. If you should answer, she will confuse your answer with some other word in her vocabulary, rather than remarking on what you said in most cases. I’m not sure how much actual text there is in the book. I think it may just be a picture book. If she were working correctly, all you would have to do is touch her two fingers to the particular picture in the book, and Julie would identify the picture by name. A scarf, a sweater, her friend, her dog, a kite, stuff like that. I’m not yet sure if she is truly damaged or if the conductive material on the chips in the book has been rubbed away from use. She was kept in near mint condition in her box, but her book looks as though it is seen better days. As I said, in my video, I am bidding on two separate Julie voice cards that come with their own book and sticker sheets. I’m hoping at least one of them will be readable for her. I wish there was a less expensive way I could test for this, though. Lol! It’s coming to the tune of around 46 or $48 by the time all is said and done.

I just bought one of these used. I have yet to find the cartridges for sail anywhere. I do not know how well I would do with making the reading work since I have no way to tell where the magic spots are in the book since I am blind, so I can't see the text and iimmages on the pages.

Hi! It’s nice to see another blind person here. Lol! I am blind too if I didn’t mention that in this video. Anyway, the good news is if you have her original book, you don’t need a cartridge. The words and phrases, and what not for the original book are already programmed. All you have to do is put the two fingers of her right hand (The ones that are fused together) in the middle of the small paper covered rectangles in the book. It’s very very fiddly even for sided people so if you don’t get it the first time, just keep trying. You notice the middle part of this video was 21 minutes long and that was mostly because I was searching for the exact beautiful magic position in the middle of this little rectangle spot. Lol! This, is not, easy. But it is doable, you just have to be very very patient. If her reading system works, she should identify some of the pictures. She will say things like, “scarf“, “sweater”, “Mr. Bones“. So basically what she’s doing here is identifying the pictures in the book. Let me know if this helps.

@@crazyrobotlady3391 So do the magic spots phizically feel different? Since I have absolutely no usable vision, I do most stuff by feel only. Also, I love computers and seeing how things work, and I just so happen to know exactly the kind of audio format that Julie uses for her voice. It's an odd format called LPC that is built of some sawtooth waves that are modulated and combined to reproduce sounds, but usually those sounds are speech. Other examples of devices from the time, both earlier and later, that use it include the speak and spell, the echo 2 speech synthasizer for the apple 2, and several of the original ferby models. It's quite interesting and if you are handy with using the command line on a computer, there's a toll for both windows and linucs systems that can convert into and out of lpc format, so you could see what pretty much anything could sound like that way.
