Video brought back memories for my self, I started with Operator engineering local #3 in August of 1966, just farm kid , my first pieces Equipment was D6c dozer, then ran motor grader for couple years then my first backhoe was case 580, then John Deere 500c , it seems never to brake down. Now I have over 50 plus years in Local #3 Engineering.

Some UK roads have empty ducts fitted with a pull-cord for possible future use, so that the road does not have to be dug-up for a crossing. The duct ends behind either curb, marked by a foot-cube concrete cube with 'D' moulded into it.

I was a line locator for 5 years, gas, electric, phone, catv. One of the most hectic damage investigations ive ever seen was a 3 phase primary burried in white PVC conduit. A plumber was looking for the service line between the buisness and Main, he thought that white PVC was the sewer, took a hacksaw and sawed right into the primary. It melted the saw and the plumber was ok, guess the plastic handle is what saved him. The electric company showed up on scene and told the plumber that he should take a trip to vegas because he was the luckiest basterd they had seen. What i would like to know is who the stupid SOB that pushed a primary leading to a pad mount transformer in white plumbing PVC pipe and not grey.
@ronkali5365
@ronkali5365 3 жыл бұрын
That's why you never assume anything, they used what they had i guess. They could have mark the white pvc also
@rawblow4512
@rawblow4512 3 жыл бұрын
RON KALI yep and they electric company could have laid some buried caution tape a few feet above that line when they trenched it in years ago. But the plumbing contractor also started digging before the locaters had a chance to come paint and flag, if they were in such a hurry they could have called in a short notice or emergency locate request.

I feel for you underground crews exposing utilities, their is so much shit buried i don’t know how you do it, a lot of potholing with shovel or water. Most locates can have miss marks, the transmitter signal bleeding off onto other utilities etc etc, its mostly by luck and trusting your receiver. I had one telco locate on a busy intersection and their was so much crap buried their on the blue prints that i really thought about puncturing a can of orange spray paint and throwing it on to the corner grass and tossing up a handful of flags! 😂🤣

Their is reason behind the madness as a spotter, in thoa video you only see the operators point of view. As shanoe metioned in the video hardpan can be tricky. I like chewing under the utility first before diging the backaide, so once you are under the utility all you have to do is dig the backside and not have to come back and chew through it. We use those as well when they are needed in softer soil. This ground was supper hard and tight we really did not even need the shores other than it is the law.

They really like to keep the side of the road swept off. Don't want the dump truck's to get any dirt on the tires. Geeze

The street has to be clean for traffic at the end of the day. We had to open the road every night. So keeping it clean helps cleanup at the end of the day. We spend less time cleaning at the end so I can dig for a longer time. That equals a more productive job.

Well Lever monkey your right about exposing the top layers first, but what you do when your labor insist to the other way.. I found that the labor were a click especially Mexican labors, If you didn't speak Spanish you were practically out. I've seen twice other labor being Spanish that didn't speak Spanish were Eliminated from there crews.

I agree you should never trust a rig. Guys can mistake trusting the operator to trusting the rig.

What they don’t understand is they run the job those guys the foreman thinks he runs the job operator thinks he runs the job but really it’s the spotter or the guy that works closest to the bucket given the directions they run the job it goes one way or the other depending on them 100%
@TheLeverMonkey
@TheLeverMonkey 3 жыл бұрын
Well not so much running the Job. They run the dig and may double as a top man. There is so much more to running the job compared to running the crew. I have the mindset of, My ground man is in control when I need him to be and I am in control between those moments. The pipelayer is in control of the pipe crew. When we all work together respecting each other job things go smoothly. anytime one steps out to say the other is doing it wrong all hell can break out. and production suffers.

Visibility. My point of view is much lower than the camera. The pile of dirt at the end of the ditch is blocking my view.
