Awesome, congrats on the win! Love some ultra trail. But dude, 1000g of carboload!? I've heard some semi-credible sources saying 10g/kg is top of what you can absorb in loading - and that's with the right stimulus from a bit of muscle work. Probably better to top up the last bit the morning of the race if you want to be absolutely full? But I'm no expert....😅
@archmdz
@archmdz 10 ай бұрын
Most prominent study was 12g/kg for 3 days following a depletion protocol. Resulted in 1.8x higher muscle glycogen than previous "full tank". Tim Podlagar (nutritionist for Bora Hansgrohe) suggested 12g/kg the day before an endurance event as well as 1g/kg/hour in the morning (e.g. 3g/kg if eating 3hrs out, don't necessarily want to eat all the way up to the start) before the event to top off liver stores as the liver works overnight to top off the muscles, and that was with no depletion protocol. Yes 1000g (I'm ~74-75kg so well over 12g/kg mark) is maybe a little excessive but this was a great event to test the limits of consumption since I wasn't too concerned about blowing it. The other thing regarding that study is as far as I know they never tested, for example, 15g/kg to see if there is more glycogen super compensation or if it maxes out around that 1.8 mark so to a certain extent I'm experimenting on myself. Metabolically I felt great the entire 50k so I think 1000g is a safe number for the future.

@@archmdz if you do this another ultra in the future or another 12-15g/kg, I wonder what other types of carbohydrate would do to your GI system mid-race, specifically if more complex sources would leave fewer undigestible carbohydrates for the colonic bacteria leading to the ... mishap. You mentioned the caffeine pills every hour, did you also happen to track your sodium intake?

@archmdz
@archmdz 10 ай бұрын
Recovery Aid -- decreases time to replenish muscle glycogen after a hard session (which is the purpose of having carbs after a session, so ketones make your recovery drink 50% more powerful) Cognitive Aid - This one is less studied than the previous but it helps with "brain fog" and focus since the brain utilizes ketones easily and so has fuel as blood glucose/muscle glycogen is running lower. I would guess it is more of a "Central Governor" effect (read Noakes for more) but seems to provide a performance benefit nonetheless.

do you still do the weight gainer shakes at night before big sessions/races
@archmdz
@archmdz 10 ай бұрын
Not necessary if I've already hit the amount of carbs I wanted to that day. I tried that before one race simulation session (which went well) and then 70.3 Oregon (which didn't go well) and then stumbled upon the current carb loading protocol (12g/kg throughout the day before) so it wasn't necessary anymore. Also don't need all that protein, just did it for the carbs which I can get from other sources.

@archmdz
@archmdz 10 ай бұрын
I could probably "go pro" but unless I stopped triathlon entirely I doubt I'd be very good. Not that I'm even that great compared to the top level pros in triathlon, so I have to keep chipping away there. Not interested in switching focus to trails/ultra -- this was just for fun.

Probably about 50 people, but I knew ahead of time it was unlikely to be competitive. I didn't *expect* to win though as I thought there was a good chance I blow up and walk the last 10 miles and get passed by less fit but better trained and more experienced runners. Went better than I thought!

@@archmdz honestly dude, props to you. those are the kind of events that a lot of people in trail & ultra running love and respect... low key, grass roots. Sooo I'll cut the shit I give you the respect you deserve. Strong run, and you won. 👊

@@archmdz I swear I replied, but it isn't here. Listen man, just keep on going strong and figuring out what the roots of ultra trail are, and working on taking the asshole vibes from a 6 to a 3 (out of 10, I can relate) and you will get along real well. It's work, as I said. Sorry for the sarcastic comment and keep up what you do. Honestly though? Don't listen to me. Do focus on those good grassroots origins though, which the spirit of this race seemed to follow.

I only eat like crap the day before the race because the goal is to consume as many simple carbohydrates and as little fiber as possible. Believe it or not it is a research and performance backed protocol used by some of the best endurance athletes in the world.
