In the 1960's my dad's childhood friend had a Junkyard in Sand Island. Whenever we would visit him we would go to Penny's Lunch Wagon, I remember their paper plates were a different texture with a parchment paper on it so it wouldn't leak when you're eating Curry Stew which was my favorite. Thanks for sharing theses videos. Really enjoy reminiscing of my youth. I still enjoy eating at these places even at 68 years of age.

Thank you for sharing your wonderful memories of childhood! I'm glad some of these old school places are still around and in business. You just cannot get that kind of food cooked the way they do it once they are all gone. Curry stew sounds delicious right now!

Thank you for spotlighting these nostalgic and less represented eateries. 🍱 🍣🍤 I appreciate the interesting historical tidbits included in your vlogs. The fact that these places have withstood changing times and challenges, such as the pandemic, is a testament to the food quality and loyalty of their customers. After watching this, I may prepare beef stew for tomorrow. Enjoy your Friday evening! ✨🌺✨

A couple of my favorites from Monarch are the Nori wrapped crab and their Mochiko chicken is one of the best I've ever tasted. Interesting that a Mochiko chicken at a "Seafood" place is so good.

Thanks for the history lesson. Makes the vid real interesting. And thanks for doing these saimin places. Haven't been there in years and I thought they were gone. I still remember the local soda bottling place next to Palace Saimin, but that is giving away my age. LOL

I will keep watching so I keep up with the old and new. Your videos bring back many memories. My Dad worked at what used to be Star Bulletin and delivered ads to Gems on Dillingham and I would ride with him sometimes. I lived on Hikina lane and went to Kaiulani Elementery. There was a church next to Tamashiro market, is it still there? It's been cool talking with you and the weather here in Jacksonville, Fl is in the 40-50's now. I have been watching you all morning and it's been awesome. Much Aloha 🥰🤙 @@FoodFiend

@@user-ix6cm2gf4i Hikina Lane must look different to you when you enter. They made a huge health center on the corner of N King and Hikina, but the rest inside looks the same. I used to have to go on Eu Lane for work and the houses are the same old houses that kind of look creepy LOL. But all the apartments are still on Hikina. The Kaumakapili Church is still across Tamashiro Market.

I remember going there a lot on evening family outings (when they were just The Saimin House and located next to Tamashiro Market).when I was a kid (I’m 65 now) Rumor has it that when the old man passed on, he took some of the original recipe with him. Whether or not that’s true, it doesn’t matter because the saimin is still good. Also been to the other two places and their food is good. Can’t go wrong with any of those places.

I grew up in Kalihi and remember Hall Saimin because I lived there on Hikina Lane. I loved Hall Saimin, we would by their cone and maki sushi when it was a dime a piece(slice). We could smell the bbq sticks cooking on the hibachi coming out the back door of the restaurant. There was a store next door and next to it was Violet's restaurant, another good place to eat. Then Q's drive-in was around the corner. I had so many good memories. Mahalo 🤙!!!!

She was one of the first lunch wagons here it was on sand island next to the bridge. She worked very hard raising her children by herself going from mayor wrights to kalihi and Democrat st. To upper liliha. She has recently passed and can now rest after working so hard for so long. Her children now run pennys and work hard. Thank you for sharing thier good food.
