Yes!! No wonder! I was expecting some elaborate way of loading and testing with some expensive equipment, when you just described what my grandpa did. He would shoot with one hand in a certain spot on the barrel of his deer rifle because it shot better that way. I don't believe he knew why, just that it did. It was "the sweet spot" that an individual must find with every individual rifle. He also taught me to hold the rifle in my shoulder tight like it was a part of me. Cheek too. Like someone was trying to take it away and I wasn't gonna let them. I've looked into tuners, deresonators, and such, but old school technique just works. Bravo!

Anything that simplifies load development is most welcome. Especially since currently there are serious shortages of components in the USA. If all I have to do on that end is measure out a consistent charge and have a consistent seating depth with consistent neck tension, that's great. Great video.

It’s awesome that you have your own ideas from your own experience! And obviously it works. I am playing with these things a lot of my spare time. I have found that seating depth is the biggest factor for me but I am going to try your theory and see how it goes. By the way I am loving the bag base, I get comments on it all the time. Great information Mark... it's amazing that sound travels through steel 15 times faster than air. So the "click" of the trigger and the "impact" of the firing pin with the primer are sending sound/vibration waves up and down the barrel long before the bullet leaves the barrel!

A vibrational wave travelling 20,000 fps will cover 32 in. (2X barrel length) in roughly .000133 seconds. Over .003 seconds the wave will oscillate along the barrel 22.5 times. From the time time the trigger is pulled till the projectile leaves the muzzle IS .003 seconds.

Hi mark, thats a bloody awesome explanation outside of the box, im a fitter and turner by trade and can now relate machining harmonics / chatter when cutting a long piece of stock to the difference of running a steady or shortening up the stock in the chuck to what you are talking about with soaking up barrel harmonics. Excellent explanation mark and I think you are 100% correct about being connected to the gun I shoot bench rest but I am one of the few 1 of the few that maintains contact with my gun And I can see the differences in my groups and load development And even in my chronograph speeds if that makes sense !! Thoroughly enjoy all of yours and Sam's videos

Harmonics =sound vibration. I believe that one of the reasons that you shoot better than some people is you have been doing this for more than two weeks. A lot of people are impatient and just because " I bought x,y,z perfect long range rifle and should be able to shoot a dime at a mile" in the first 5 minutes. Personally I just go to the range to relax and have fun. If you don't enjoy it why do it? Thanks for the video. Stay safe. Take care. 😎

Great video, and explanation. I don't really get into measuring things...like pressure. I do load development until I am shooting one ragged hole..and thats ok for me. However, you now have me thinking about measuring my pressure to negate some of the external forces like barometric pressure..and such. Thanks Mark..keep up the good videos..

Mark, I’ve spent some time recently viewing other people’s videos on reloading and barrel tuning. I’ve had to try to suspend my disbelief when watching people try to use a barrel tuner to improve a rifle/load that is shooting 2+ inch groups at 100 yards… Mark Westrom, founder and former owner of the modern ArmaLite rifle company told me back in 2005 that we were in the ‘golden age’ of barrel and ammo development. If you watch some of the shooting videos currently on KZfaq (not yours), it would sometimes give you the impression the industry has gone backwards in time since then. Based on what I was shooting back then, I’d throw out some of the barrels I see people shooting, and posting videos of. I probably shouldn’t run my mouth before I get back on a range and see if I can still shoot, but I still have some pretty darn good targets from back then.

Good explanation. Better than I could do, and I have tried. Working up your loads to the most accurate load, is also tuning your gun to harmonics. That is the traditional way, though you could tune your loads to the lowest standard deviation and extreme spread, then tune in the harmonics. That would be a better way. For people that only shoot factory ammo, and 22 LR, tuning the harmonics after finding the best factory load is the way to go. I don’t think the human body in contact with a gun would interact with the harmonics, and the bullet would be long gone before there’s any effect, similar to how a bullet can pass through a target long before the target reacts and moves. I think having a consistent position behind the gun has little to do with how you were interacting with harmonics, and far more to do with consistency and proper technique.

Hello, I am doing research on BH and have to explain it, put forth how it may be altered and how I thought it could be altered by how it actually can be. Bravo on your video. You brought together all the facts and the FIRST to explain the BH are microscopic waves. How many videos of barrels bouncing due to recoil and the producer/audience claim BH after projectile clears muzzle? I will be citing this video in my gunsmith paper RE: Barrel Harmonics. Well Done.

Really well spoken mark ;-) I’m about to get into reloading and F*#k me the nonsense that goes on the reloading pages 🤦‍♂️. I’m trying your way first. Rather than node tuning just ladder test for pressures. This reinforces my desire to keep the laminated wood stock on my rifle.... Have you ever thought about comparing a chassis to a wooden stock using the exact same barreled action? As always thanks for the down to earth common sense explanation.

This topic has been around since the advent of firearms, over a100years ago the Lee Enfield engineers were trying to sort out the tuning of the good ole 303. When I was shooting full bore years ago some of the gunsmiths had their own black art of tuning the rifles, it’s a fascinating topic.👍

I wonder if adding weights to a chassis could give similar results, as long as there's a medium between the action and the weights that will stop the weights from moving at the same frequency This topic was so much simpler before the idea that barrel harmonics could be dampened externally 😫

You can also dampen harmonics by adding a counter vibrating mass such as draping a sheet of chainmail across the barrel. It works a little like noise cancellation.

Have you seen/heard of/tried one of TACCOM HQ's structured barrel? It alleges to by harmonically dead, so no load development for best groups, etc.

true. works much like the string of a violin or any stringed instrument. a player knows where the nodes are and how to take advantage of them. what you described is in musical terms, pizzicato and muting to a degree. in theory, if you could mitigate free ringing, it would no longer be a factor... that said, it's one hell of a thump to completely mitigate. When building a high end stringed instrument, the plates are tuned to mitigate standing waves which tend to mute frequencies or grossly accentuate other frequencies, to essentially normalize all frequencies.
