We’ve been playing a lot of O’Group up at the club and really like it. There’s a lot of nuance in the game that becomes apparent after 3 or so plays and your tutorial videos are really helpful - thanks

Cheers Miles, yeah, it takes a little while to tease out the nuances, but it is definitely worthwhile doing.

Well done. A very clear description of an important aspect of the O Group rules.

These videos are brilliant, Alex. It's not always easy to get everything from just reading the rules alone.

Another awesome instructional video Alex - thanks! I purchased O-Group after I had played several games of General d’Armee; and, after reading the rules on CP’s my first reaction was “Those act just like skirmishers in Napoleonic warfare!”. Mr, Brown did an excellent job in GdA with skirmishers. They aren’t overpowered, but you still have to deal with them. He most definitely used that same philosophy in OG!

It’s Dave Brown’s Napoleonic skirmishers and O Group Combat Patrols that really make his rules stand out head and shoulders above other systems. They may seem to be trivialities to some players but to my mind are essential to capture the spirit of war in the respective periods.

@@get_the_lead_out - Exactly. It was TFL’s ‘Shock’ system that brought me back into gaming after a 25-year hiatus. Such a neat way of recording disorder/fatigue/cumulative fear while keeping it separate from casualties.

A great report Alex. The combat patrols really make O Group a great set of rules. I have recently reread Charles B McDonalds Company Commander. A great book to appreciate O Group.

Great video !! I’m replaying your o group videos and reading the rules, so that I can get a good grasp of the rules before I’ve painted the 2 battalion’s I need to play solo games or find a way of map playing a game to play by eMail. Perhaps a Battle mat with section wide (across flat) hexes with the same measurement drawn on roads or just inches so that placing miniatures will be easy to reference with an eMail Moves could be quite fast with a table occupied if you have the space at home. If not a sheet of 1cm hex paper would convert it to a board game set up in spare space or a dog house ;-)

Great video. I agree with your thoughts on the use of combat patrols. We recently played 2 WW1 Middle East games using O-Group. Moving combat patrols then deploying a unit onto the combat helped move across open ground. In the same 2 games having combat patrols on flanks restricted the movement of opposition combat patrols.

Interesting stuff, and I haven’t read or played these rules yet. Seems like O Group’s combat patrol rules expand on CoC’s more abstract patrol phase, in a way that elegantly models operations at this level of command.

I really appreciate pointing out the further uses of the CPs after standard deployment. Flank protection and screening advances. Normally you'd have to dedicate whole units in other games and then you end up with two lines advancing towards each other. This feels more dynamic

Everything is great in this video: the explanation of the patrols, the figures and the scenery. I had not understood that you can send patrols after deploying a platoon. Very good point to indeed threaten a flank and force a reaction. Where did you buy the roads?

what happens if a combat patrol is on top of an ambushing unit (and hasn't scouted and is used to deploy). This is a handy video for a bit of the game I found quite hard to get my head around hahah
