Hello, sorry to hear of your pain but glad that the gabapentin has been helpful. If that fails I would have your neurologist try Tegretol, it may also be effective. Your condition may very well be trigeminal neuralgia, but with the pain around the eye and eye injection (redness) and burning, one must also consider SUNCT syndrome (short unilateral neuralgiform headache with conjunctival tearing), cluster headache, or even possibly Raeder syndrome (though the latter has a droopy eyelid and a small pupil associated with the pain). Trigeminal neuralgia is also a possible source for your pain. I am glad medications are effective for you.

eBrainMD Thank you - , I am making another appointment with a new Neurologist since the last one didn't seem to know 100% and the pain is still there without the Gabapentin. I will mention the other conditions to him/her.

Hello Pei: Technically, you are correct, that bilateral (both sides) face pain "could" be coming from vascular compression. In reality, the odds of someone somehow developing compression on both sides at once is so extremely rare, that if someone has pain on both sides of the face, it is much much more likely coming from something else like MS (multiple sclerosis) or a small stroke in the brain stem. Bilateral face pain is generally not classic trigeminal neuralgia and a contra-indication for decompression surgery as the source for the pain is in question.

No, the lesions were related to Migraines and the symptoms are related to migraines, silent migraines and severe foraminal stenosis in my neck region. I am due to have spine surgery in a few months. That is the first step and I will go from there.

That's how i feel too. If it wasn't for my religion and son life isn't living None of the doctors knew what this was. My pain management doctor told me i couldn't take pain !!! he thought it was just a migraine. I was ready to punch him. I never ever had a pain even come close to this and i had my sons naturally. I would take that pain a hundred times instead of having this pain. .

I had microvascular decompression (MVD) surgery after suffering with TN for 3.5 years. This December will be 3 years pain free. I also pray too that it never comes back. I can't go back to that pain again !!!

@Ron Krikorian During the last 6 years still trying to control the pain. TENS treatment, symptoms of Fibromyalgia (but still being checked to confirm it.) , Chronic Migraines-with Botox treatment-still active, Meniere's disease and meds.

+lori hill You go to the shows for your daughter.She needs her Mom.You just wear a light scarf-or cough a bit.Sometimes people in Toronto will wear the medical face masks.No kidding.Many people have to wait about 6 months before they have implant surgery,so even people that can afford the things have to walk around without their teeth for a while.You could just make believe you are one of them. If all your teeth are gone dentures should be cheaper than partial dentures.Not sure where you live.Still expensive ,though. I have thought about going to check out costume places around Hallowe'en and then just adjust the teeth to how I want them to look-seeing that they would be impossible to eat with-just something cosmetic. Maybe your doctor could suggest something?

Tegratol did work but the pressure behind my ear comes back it lasted 1 month went away came back then went away again.

The trigeminal nerve and its origin are within the skull and travel to the face through foramen (holes) in the lower front of the skull. The vessels compressing the trigeminal nerve in trigeminal neuralgia are similarly within the skull. I do not know of any chiropractic methods that can treat conditions within the skull. However, if this system of care helps patients manage the pain, it may be beneficial, but it would not remove the cause of the problem.

eBrainMD insert I was mistaken about what procedure she had that worked. It wasn't the sponge insertion surgery that worked. She did have that one but it didn't help. The procedure that dis work was similar to the gamma knife procedure. The neurologists that performed it is Dr. Hawk. He is based out of Wilson Memorial hospital in upstate NY.
