In April 2017 Union Pacific ran its second steam excursion since the 844 was unveiled from a multi-year rebuild, going from Cheyenne Wyoming to Boise Idaho and back. This video documents the trip at track speed from Ogden Utah to just outside of Green River Wyoming. Unfortunately the train was traveling so fast that more than half of the planned photo spots fell through because we couldn't catch up to it in time, but the experience of seeing a steam-powered passenger train on the original Transcontinental Railroad Route was incredible.
Check out my friend Mitch Harv, who rode with me in this chase and endured the back of my head popping up in his videos several times: / upfan2000

So great to see the 844 heading back toward Wyoming! Toy Man and I wanted to chase it toward Evanston, but the weather kept us from doing that. We did meet the train in Pocatello and followed it Ogden. What a beautiful train! Great video!

Thanks for the compliment! I watched your video this morning. I would have been there along with Adam if I didn't have final exams that day... :(

Great shots of the 844, even despite your challenges of keeping up with it, Joshua! This video provided me the reason to join your channel. I really like the way that you film your subject matter and capture it on digital video. From the comments below, I see that you already know Dale and his wife Karyn from their Toy Man Television channel on KZfaq. I also really enjoyed their video about the 844. Do you also know another local Utahan and KZfaq creator named Lee Witten? If you like watching historical railfanning videos from yesteryear, then Lee Witten has something to suit your fancy. I believe that he works for Ogden's Union Station Foundation as the film archivist or something like that. Lee has digitized some incredible railfanning films. These films were originally shot decades ago by some of his fellow Utahans in 8mm and in perhaps other types of motion picture celluloid. Many, if not all, of the original filmmakers have died, but thanks to Lee their legacies have not been lost to dustbin of history. Through Lee's preservation efforts and the support of the Union Station Foundation, these vintage railfanning films can now be seen and enjoyed by everyone on KZfaq. Here's a link to one of Lee's most recent video posts on KZfaq: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qcuZnMR8lpyZiGQ.html Keep up the great work, Joshua! I look forward to seeing your future railfanning videos. -from Tom Pilling

Way ahead of you on that one. I work with Lee on the board of the Golden Spike Chapter Railway & Locomotive Historical Society. I used to be on the museum's equipment committee and spent quite a bit of time helping him catalogue new donations when I lived in Ogden, I even went with him to have most of those old film reels digitized when they were first donated :)

Cool, that's good to see how Utah's railroad enthusiast community is so tight and knows one another. I don't live in your state, but I enjoy watching three KZfaq channels from there. I'm a trucker who actually crosses all over this great country of ours, which also gives me endless, diverse railfanning opportunities as I drive down the highways. When I'm not trucking, I briefly assume the life as an American expatriate in Mexico with my wife and young daughters in our lovely home in a seaside community. I love to do model railroading with my daughters during my brief visits at home before returning to the open road again to deliver our nation's goods. -from Tom Pilling
