My old van from the '00's has roof glass from the '60's, and I'm not stopping there. This will be the camper conversion to break from the norm.
My video production takes a long time, so it's difficult to win on youtube. To support my productions visit georgekarellas.com

I watch Bad Obsession Motorsport because I like perfection for the sake of perfection. I watch Soup Classic Motoring because I like pragmatism, the principle of making due and the can-do attitude. Life is about striking the right balance between what you have, what you can and what you need. These two channels are on the opposite ends of this spectrum, and it's refreshing to get a glimpse into both worlds.

when I designed B-van campers for my former employer, we used rock wool in the walls and ceiling for insulation in the cavities. I would add a channel to each end of the opening in the sunroof, also a wood frame around it will stiffen it up plus give you a surface to attach the ceiling panel. doing a great job with the limited materials you have!

Fantastic job as always, coming up with some unique problem solving ideas (which is what I like to do). Its the reason I like the channel, plenty of unique ideas and great execution of them on a budget aswell! Great stuff! I fitted new panels to my BMW and sprayed them myself (first attempt at spraying) so with rattle cans, it actually came out looking factory with correct paint code&wide fan nozzles. BUT after 18months the whole thing crazed and peeled/flaked! Think the undetcoated Chinese panels might have reacted? But gutted (Upshot is i need to replace all/do it all again, so i feel your pain!)
@soupclassicmotoring

My bonnet crazed and it turned out to be the material that had been sprayed on it before I owned it was soft, so as my top coat paint contracted as it dried, it cracked. It's just like how a mud pit or salt flat cracks as it dries out. Thanks for the kind words.

Really annoying about the paint But better to find out about it in the yard than many miles away. You'll be putting the panel wipe on with a sponge from now on. You learn something new every day 🤗 The roof window hole would have scared me, much bracing required. Really crap weather we've had, it's no fun tinkering outside lately.
@Framo60
@Framo60 7 ай бұрын
If this were my van, I would have tried to leave all the internal braces untouched, in order to keep the whole structure of the van body intact - they are there for a reason, and have been designed to be able to withstand certain loads and stresses. And these large 'tin boxes on wheels' are weak enough already in their original form, even compared to contemporary cars ... I think that having a crash or a rollover in a van with compromised structures will inevitably make things worse than having the same kind of accident in a van with its essential upper body strength intact and being as designed by the manufacturer. Of course it would be even better to have no crash or rollover at all, but it is not always up to us to decide about this matter ... For this reason, I would have set the skylight insert parallel to the transverse roof braces (and maybe rather use two skylights along the length of the van roof). But I am not remodeling this van, so this not for me to decide ...
@soupclassicmotoring
@soupclassicmotoring 7 ай бұрын
No fun with the weather is right! Bracing coming for the skylight, it's flexing the roof aft of it where there's less structure. Thank you both.

Nice idea for the bulkheads. A couple things to help you in the future: when you're cutting plywood, put masking tape where your cut line will be to reduce chipping. Also, even for little people, that plywood looks too thin. Best to put a couple strips of 2x to support them, but this is a good thing because you can also add fold-down legs with pegs to hold them in place when they're both upright and folded down.

I love how you're not constrained by the internal bracing - instead almost choosing to cut through the bracing as though it were a challenge to overcome. This is a serious comment, by the way - not as sarcastic as it might seem when read out loud. 😉 I admire the work you do, and you've inspired me to both buy myself a Sprinter and to learn to weld.

The metal lip and the neoprene were genius ideas. I always have to gag when I see the sealant fest on other conversions. Super thick beads to make up for the roof profile. Ugly as sin. Your solution is by far the best of dozens I have seen so far with the potential exception of a ready to use frame that was inversly shaped like the roof of the sprinter. But your solution is more flexible and looks really sophisticated and OEM. Great idea, whoever came up with it.
@soupclassicmotoring

One of those "why didn't I think of that" kind of solutions. The super thick beads of sealant give me the willys too. Not least because you don't often see someone checking that the sealant is UV stable. Thanks

11:07 I find vapour barriers are all well and good but it is also good to paint all wood panelling all round... I used a 1/8 inch thick foam and mylar insulation (1m wide rolls) which is normally used under laminate flooring. It can me worked with almost everywhere in the van, it reflects heat back in and acts as a vapour barrier...

making progress there, George! I was thinking that some sandwich foam board or honeycomb board would work well & be lighter for the bulkheads. But then there are the disadvantages of having to buy it (more expensive than plywood), and working with plastic/fibreglass. The plywood is much easier if you don't have to save the grams! The skylight looks good, I was expecting you to build a brace around it like you did with the side windows, but perhaps the frame is stiff enough? You can check it, so you would know!

No it didn't tear, but where I hammered in a tight spot it made the adjacent metal flatten again, if that makes sense... so it was a matter of brute force and balance. I couldn't claim it looked pretty, but it's painted and sealed and invisible. Good luck with the install.

Ahh, come on George!…No teasing with the W124 in the background! Your last merc rebuild was what drew me in to your channel, and I’m a fan of the last of the properly built autobahn cruisers…Any chance you can put the Lotus on the back burner and crack straight on with this one?…

Bollocks dat paint-craquelé .... I am curious how that "compartmentalizing" will come out. When I re-built mine, first thing I did was de-compartmentalize the burrow the previous owner had created inside .... it got sold recently, and I am now working on the next, smaller version of my getaway car, a VW T4 swb which will be one room including the (fully turning) front seats.

@@soupclassicmotoring I'm not sure my idea is "right", don't get me wrong. I'm curious, as I said. Compartments can be very comfy, interesting and could make it more easily/permanently usable (instead of having to change table-to-bed or seats-to-drive each time You want to do something else which can be a pain). What I do dig absolutely are those Defender glass panes and the overhead glass - two of those will come into mine as well this time. Thanks for sharing!

Are the rubber washers at risk of perishing and letting water in? Maybe plastic would be a longer term solution?

They'll perish, but not for years. Nothing is for life, except maybe taxes

Remember if you're wanting to countersink you need an actual countersink as the angle on the end of a drill bit isn't right for a countersunk bolt to fit.

Is there any reason you chose the foam seal? Some silicon would have saved you a lot of effort turning up the steel edges, just pour a lot on and your good.
@soupclassicmotoring
@soupclassicmotoring 7 ай бұрын
I would have turned up the steel if I had used silicone too. The foam is quicker, easier and far less messy in my opinion.
@jedics1
@jedics1 7 ай бұрын
@@soupclassicmotoring I will be interested to see how well it stands up as foam is a pourus material and breaks down quickly in the sun. Silicone can be aweful stuff for sure but it gets into every crevis when you tighten the skylight down. Who cares if it doesn't leak I guess :)

@@soupclassicmotoring Yeah man, trade offs galore... I am not sure if the type I (more simpler hinges which allow only for the doors to open up to 180 degrees) are that much stronger... I am planning a roof box hung from one of the rear doors but I am quite sure it would not be for storage of (say) 8 bags of cement...but more for outdoor seats, an inflatable boat thing or maybe an in law...
