Savage rifles are excellent and well-loved by many gun enthusiasts and devote collectors. Today I am comparing the modern Savage 110 with the classic Super Sporter. The contrast in appearance is dramatic, but the purpose-built, practical quality is consistent. I'm back in the beautiful mountains shooting the Savage Super Sporter and Model 110 to see how they perform. I also take you back to the studio for a closer look at these great savage rifles. Thanks for watching! If you liked this video please consider the links below, and sign up to be notified of future videos.

Savage Super Sporter with a buttom magazine release will take a 4 round magazine only. The 3 round will get struck and hard to get it out. The 3 round magazine will fit Super Sporter rifle with 'in stock' magazine release. But a 4 round magazine will work with a rifle with 'in-stock' magazine release. I too had a similar issue about 25 years ago.

My husband's family hunted whitetail deer for decades on the family farm in Wisconsin, he recalls that an Uncle used a Savage Supersporter up until the late 1980s. My husband solid his Savage 30-30 bolt action before we met in the 1990s and still regrets it to this day!

I owned two Savage 14 Classic ; a .300 wsm and a .270 wsm.....both are beautiful fire arms old school way, and both shoots so accurately. The .300 wsm is my go to rifle for moose hunting and even at 300 yards, it is surprisingly flat shooting. Savage is an underrated company and still a well kept secret. I will never sell them. Though I am a Winchester collector, my favorite all time hunting rifle is a Savage Model 99, .300 Savage. When I was a kid our family had a Savage Model 340 .22 Hornet rifle in one of the ranch trucks. I killed a lot of coyotes and 1 deer with that rifle. The Super Sporter is in the class with the Model 340 (and also the Remington Model 788) I think Savage rifles have always been underestimated, usually because they aren't as "pretty". I think that precision shooting has boosted Savage overall. I recall detachable magazines being considered "cheap and ugly" in the 60s, 70s, 80s. Which the Super Sporter, Model 340 and Model 788 all had. The pendulum has swung and now detachable box magazines are the soupe du jour! They were always just as useful as they are now. Thanks for the great video! FWIW there is a Savage Super Sporter Deluxe (with checkering) in excellent condition on Gunbroker now bidding at $575 with a "buy now" price of $650.

Such a great post - thank you. I especially like the grouping with the 788 - which I had not thought of. I forgot to mention that these Super Sporters are usually remarkably accurate - just like the 788. I'll look for the deluxe sporter - thanks again!

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns I have come to assume if it is a Savage, it will be very accurate. My Model 99 is far more accurate than a lever gun with a two piece has any business being. We just recently bought a Savage MKII BTV for my wife. It was so impressively accurate, I went back and bought another one for myself. My wife was not interested in sharing hers! She's like that. 😏 For about the price of one of the competitors rifles, we got two!

Mike I found an incredibly old Super Sporter in 30-30. My lord, what a shooter. It's about as primitive as you do a rifle but I'm taking this old girl deer hunting next fall. 250 bucks and 1 moa in a 80-90 year old rifle with Remington core-lokt. Lol I can't believe people do t collect these things. It came with 12 shells from the original box of 3030s the fellows great grandfather used when he got the rifle. It had 8 rounds through it in its life. I've never seen such a cool rifle. That simplicity thing is as you say. Elegant

Why did Savage move their bolt handles to the rear of the bolt? Can anyone help please?
@UnitedStatesOfGuns
@UnitedStatesOfGuns Жыл бұрын
Hi Phil, I asked a Savage collector. Apparently it all has to do with ease of manufacture. The bolt handle and locking lugs can be made more efficiently as separate parts and then assembled with the bolt body - then any other way. I have not seen a Savage bolt handle sheared off as the handle is part of a ring of steel - no brazing or other fastening of the handle stem - pretty smart - but it does put the bolt handle at the back of the bolt. Hope this makes sense and thanks for asking.

When I first saw that Super Sporter, it reminded me of the Remington 788 in many aspects. The lugs are different, but similarly located in the frame. Could it be that Big Green was taking an older design and trying to make it their own "modern" one, and that it is the 788 that resembles the Savage Super Sporter? If your target plate could talk it would probably say, "Why didn't he use the 30/30 instead of the 30-06!?"

Most bullets are copper/lead (non-ferrous).
@danielrouw2593

For reference the principle would be diamagnetism. Copper and lead both should work. The faster the projectile the more force the magnetic field will induce. The issues will be in the material of barrel possibly shielding the field and the heat produced damaging the magnets.

Hey it's me again Mike. Another fine video! One of the older Savage bolt action rifles I have on my want list is the model 1920 which was the year it was introduced and the beefed up version some times referred to as the 1920/26 as 1926 was the year the improved rifle came out. The 1920 was a short action controlled round feed, very much Mauser like that was only available in 250-3000 and 300 Savage. It was based on an action that Savage had submitted for US Military use but lost out to the Enfield and Springfield designs. I want one in each caliber to go along with my 99's. @@UnitedStatesOfGuns Depends on the size of the game you are hunting. I have been shooting for more than seventy years and I was taught and have always followed the principle of place your shot so you don't make your game needlessly suffer. Not to mention getting away and dying a slow death. A twelve inch plate covers a lot of space. In many species it would be the difference between a kill and a miss. If you are a varmit hunter shooting at extended ranges for ground hogs, etc. a twelve inch group would be a bad joke. For big game it would be downright dangerous. You need to be able to put the shot where it is needed not a foot away. It is irresponsible to be satisfied with that sloppy of marksmanship unless you only shoot paper even then you should try to get better. It is a frame of mind as well, if you accept sloppy accuracy in your weapon you will probably accept sloppy performance on your own part. The weapon should challenge you to do better not provide excuses to do worse.
