I have been looking for a long time for one of these to share with you, and I finally have a Winchester-Hotchkiss1883 in the studio. The Hotchkiss shares its era with other great rifles and I have some of them on the table. Join me as we learn more about the Mosin Nagant, the Remington Lee, and an 1888 Commission rifle sporter. Of course, we'll compare them all to this great Hotchkiss and see what we like best! Afterwards remember to join me on Patreon and Instagram for more firearm fun and facts.

Oh yes. I love that 1888. What an elegant rifle. Very slight but sturdy and obviously ergonomic. I absolutely love anything with double set triggers. I really like everything from the 1800’s, even the pieces that didn’t do well. The older the better in my book. Those were very nice pieces you shared. I enjoyed them all.

That's my favorite time frame for rifles roughly from 1865 to 1918. Most of the different action style came out by then plus the cartridge was perfected. With very few exceptions all rifles from that point were just refinements of various actions from before. It is interesting to see the different solutions the inventors came up with to make a functional gun when they had no blueprint to follow.

Thanks John - that period was incredible - I wish i could find more rifles from it but I'm told that aristocracy had the gold for the best guns and no one else - and there wasn't much aristocracy numbers wise. I guess it makes sense. I'm glad I don't hesitate when a fine rifle from those times appears.

@USOG, been watching your video's for a while now. Think your one of the best on You-Tube that puts out gun videos and the history of guns. Learned a lot of things from your video's. Just picked up a Ruger mini 14 in the 5.56 mm. Since I bought this mini 14 been studying the WW2, 30 Carbine, since the mini -14 is a combination copy of the 30 Carbine and the m1 Garand. Do not know if I missed it but do you have a video of the WW2 on the .30 Carbine or the m1 Garand ? If not can you make a video of the WW2, .30 carbine comparing it to the Ruger mini 14 and also compare it to like the Russian ak-47 etc...?

That 1883 is a cool gun, and a previous owner clearly had the sense to put a recoil pad on it. The 45-70 is a stout round to begin with and in modern loadings in modern guns is a legit round for Cape Buffalo. The Remington-Lee is just an elegant rifle with an elegant action. James Paris Lee came up with a basic design that is just naturally smooth and is a much stronger action than people seem to give it credit for. I also want to mention that whomever does the camera work has excellent timing. Anyhow, it is my opinion that the gun shows on the Outdoor Channel need to up their production values to keep up with you.
@UnitedStatesOfGuns
@UnitedStatesOfGuns 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Trapdoor - That 1883 is something - can't wait to get to the range with it. The Rem-Lee needs ammo - I'll pickup some .220 Swift brass and start cooking. I'm glad the camera work is good - we're simple in this studio and channel - hopefully the content makes up for whatever else may not be ideal. All the best.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns You're welcome and it'll be neat to get that Rem-Lee back on the active roster. Your channel has helped to introduce people to hidden gem firearms such as Lakelander and the Mauser 66. It also has helped to encourage people to take a harder look at what are on the used gun racks when looking for their next firearm. Your studio and channel might be "simple," but I think it has had a positive impact in encouraging people to look at firearms as not just something that goes bang.

It's significant that the bolt action rifle came into being and was perfected so quickly. Metallurgy has improved but everything else was in place. Your demonstrations of the many Mauser 98-type rifles and follow up modern CRF actions are constant reminders of how brilliant Mauser designs were and are. The only other name that compares to Mauser in the history of gun design is Browning. Great video of some really nice examples. Have a great weekend!
@UnitedStatesOfGuns
@UnitedStatesOfGuns 4 жыл бұрын
Yes Paul - the other Paul (Mauser) was the Mozart. I see nothing similar in simple brilliance. Browning as well, although not in the same way. Someone asked me make a "destruction" video as are popular on KZfaq but using a Mauser 98. I have a hunch I could fire the 98 for a few years and maybe wear out the barrel(s) - but the rifle may never fail - maybe an extractor - but no promises.
@paulsimmons5726
@paulsimmons5726 4 жыл бұрын
@@UnitedStatesOfGuns A "destruction" video of a 98? LOL, your bank account will fail before the 98 action from buying the ammo to wear out one of those beauties... I have a different idea, one that won't cost you a fortune. Beginning with the 98, show the numerous American rifles that have been beneficiaries of Mauser's genius. I know of the Springfield 1903, the Winchester 54 & 70's, various Ruger 77's, and the Kimber 8400 to name a few that popped in my head. I think showing the influence of the 98 would be a great history lesson for many of us. Destroying a 98 might be too long of a video to make, the Germans used some of these actions throughout two world wars and probably only ever touched up the barrels, if that. You'll never be able to fire as many rounds through one as did the troops under the Kaiser and Hitler did... Chuckle, chuckle. Do the history lesson, I'd love to see that way more than seeing a classic rifle mistreated. Just a thought. Have a great Thanksgiving, take care!

I saw one at a soon to close local shop, a musket unfortunately, I would prefer one like yours. The shop is open again Thursday, I'll go back and have another look, I didn't know what I was looking at when I saw it. If it's decent I might have to add it to my collection. There was a Remington Navy Rolling Block 50-70 hanging up almost out of sight, I looked at that, the bore was shootable but not great.
