A good base must be able to practice the hole easily and not break the cutting tip
The plastic is a good base to practice the holes with the punch
Pinewood
With wood can be made, but worse than plastic
Teflon (Polymers and hard rubbers)
This material is great for punching holes

With aluminum, the first hole is made fairly evenly, then the cut is flattened (not worth as a support)
