As long as the prospects did not have obvious and recent generational link to half-bloods or muggleborns, and they learned to spout the rhetoric, they were allowed to marry in. The Gaunts, on the other hand, had the added burden of also maintaining Parseltongue, so any looking the other way was out. This was why the Blacks were functional addicts and the Gaunts were in the genetic gutter.

To be honest I wondered why none of the Pureblood families looked for matches from outside the UK, I mean think about it, in Europe alone there must be dozens if not more Pureblood families and that's not counting the Americas, Africa, Asia and the Middle East, that could be probably centuries older then any family in the UK, so then why didn't they look?

I have several theories and questions. Question: Why and when did the descendants of Slytherin change their name to Gaunt? Gaunt is s surname known in the Muggle world and used by some Muggles. Was it to hide from witchfinders. Did all of the Gaunts remain in the British Isles? I think likely not. Perhaps some of them came to the States. There are a lot of snakes here and snake Handkers. Being Parseltongue they could settle the snakes down. Did all of Slytherin's descendants take the surname Gaunt? We are told little enough of wizards in foreign nations.that we don't know how many families have branches in other nations. Therefore while the House of Gaunt is extinct in England it may be alive and well in some other country.

You read the fanfiction from Marvalo Gaunt the 2nd. I came for homework, stayed for the story and am eagerly awaiting an update to that story.

Binging the audio books now. I'm almost half way done with Prince. I never knew the Gaunts resorted to incest but I did get past the part where they discuss Toms heritage.

Hey I have I question. Voldemort was the last living descendant of Salazar Slytherin in Europe/Britain. However, another branch of the Gaunt family found their way to America through Morrigan, the founder of Ilvermorny. Morrigan had two biological children, the younger of which didn’t marry or bear children. Her elder daughter Martha, was a squib. Martha married a muggle and had children with him. As we know descendants of squibs have been known to gain magical abilities. So, if somewhere down the line a descendant of Martha became a Muggle born witch/wizard, would they also become the heir of slytherin?

But why Salazara Slytherin wants it to be secret? He wanted to rid of all muggles and muggle-born,so The better way would be to tell the Slytherin students how to open it etc,right?Even Ron could speak on parsel tongue,so it shouldn't be so hard to them too?

I watched in another Harry Potter channel that suggested an interestingly unique theory that Morfin and Merope were illegitimate children of Belvina Burke née Black and Marvolo Gaunt. If you carefully observe the Black family tree there’re 3 unnamed children 2 sons and a daughter. It was suggested that one of the sons was a Burke the other 2 children were Gaunts and due to the scandalous affair the Black family chose not to name them but were still added to the tree coz they were after all pure bloods. If this is true it would mean that Voldermont has a blood relationship to several known characters that joined him as death eaters or fought against his cause like the Blacks, Malfoys, Weasleys, Crabbe, Crouch, LongBottoms etc

Truth be told, they’re a mockery of Salazar Slytherin. If you look at it from a medieval perspective, he actually had the full right to resent them. They, on the other hand, ruined the original Slytherin family.
