It's been a while since the last unsung heroes instalment, and although I'm well aware they don't attract anything like as many views as others I have no intention of giving up on these lesser known talents as long as there are more to cover. And there are many.
So here, in order of appearance, are E. T Reed, Raphael Kirchner, Miska and Maud Petersham, and Josef Fenneker.

Anyway, died a few hours after the operation but otherwise correct.

Raphael Kirchner Dies After Operation --- Austrian Artist Survives Only Few Hours in Hospital. Raphael Kirchner, an Austrian painter, best known for his portrayal of a type which has become known as "The Kirchner Girl," died yesterday at the French Hospital, a few hours after he had undergone an operation for appendicitis. During the two years he had been in this country Mr. Kirchner had become well known for his magazine covers, panels and portraits. His largest work in the United States is "The Seven Deadly Sins," which adorns the lobby of the Century Theatre. He was at work on a portrait of Mrs. Charles Dillingham when he was stricken on Wednesday afternoon. His wife was with him when he died. They had no children. New York Tribune, Friday August 3, 1917, Page 7

Pete, your videos are no less than amazing, and what a desperately timely resurrection of these images, these artists. Honestly, I am awed by what they show; and your narration is as precise as concise, vividly evoking the milieu of these times. I am just turning 75, and have always been well aware of the gifts of my age, teen and post, but I had little considered the visual cornucopia of my youth as having made me even more of what I was than subsequent seeming significant events. Looking at your collections, I saw images I remembered, or certainly seemed to, so evocative were they within me, in such a way as I so well recalled. What you have done here, Pete, is really really great-giving so much, eventually, to so many. You have my greatest gratitude. Besides all that, the background music is terrific.

WHAT A DELIGHTFUL SURPRISE! As you remember, Pete, I asked if you were going to profile Raphael Kirchner, and you replied that you were working on it. Well, your treatment of Kirchner was just wonderful. I thought that I knew a fair amount about Kirchner, but I honestly learned much from your work. This was wonderful, and I have passed the link to artist and model friends. It couldn't get better. Or so I thought. I was prepared for the Kirchner biography, and I figured that upon seeing it, I would recommend another somewhat similar artist to be profiled. That artist was Josef Fenneker. I literally screamed in delight when I saw Fenneker's name on the screen. And what a fine, well researched profile. I often use Fenneker's "Cocaine" poster as a backdrop for model shoots. Pete, I cannot tell you how happy I am watching this episode. For me, it is nothing short of sumptuous. Again, another triumph from you. I actually saw Part Eighty Eight before I saw this episode. It was worth the wait. Thank you so much, Pete, and all the best to you.

Hello and Thanks Pete for introducing these Unsung Heros. 2:17 Armory vs. Demirie was a court case ruling in favor of a chimney sweep receiving compensation for a jewel removed from a ring he was getting appraised. Short and brutish life for children sweepers starting at four to six years old in chimneys about nine by nine inches in section. E.T. Reed's father Edward James Reed helped the transition from wooden to metal ships in Britain, Germany and Japan. Impressive, considering Britain was a sea power at the time and then Japan in the years to follow. M&M Petersham's colours are amazingly bright. From the Village, NYC, to upstate New York Woodstock*. Ha, hippies, kidding. Actually, Quakers. Remember M.M. Parrish? 13:35 Ludwig Hohlwein redux * since you're a musician might be slightly amusing "Yes" frontman singer Jon Anderson admired "The Band" album 'Music from Big Pink' recorded in Woodstock. Just recently watched KZfaq Rick Beato's interview with Anderson who has a great sense of humor. Thanks again for bringing to light the little guys, Illustrators, against the ebb and flow of taste ... ebbe und flut fickle finger of short attention spans
@vincentgoupil180
@vincentgoupil180 Жыл бұрын
P.s. After posting this comment read your reply to 'justspacegoatfart' below regarding short attention spans. Perhaps, its the number four, four illustrators in a video? When giving an architectural presentation no more than three ideas appeared to be the maximum the audience would comprehend (and usually the last was emphasized since that's was the one you wanted). Same in painting, an odd number of say flowers is more interesting. Three is an vivid odd number. Four static. I admit having a short attention span myself that I start to doze off starting at four. Not that their work isn't interesting its just I have to unzip my head and pour out some info to make room for more. Also, gonna say as you know Mucha, M.M. Parrish, are pre-packaged compared to unknown Illustratiors where an effort is needed for familiarity. And, some Illustrators have greater talent, wider variety of skills, i.e. colour vs. just black and white, with the exception of Henrich Kley. genuflect So, three unknown not so talented (cringe) Illustrators when weighted against a well known donkey kong Illustator? Maybe experiment with 3.5 Illustrators? Are you familiar with any " height impaired" illustrators? And, yes, there is a long quene backlog waiting. Less Illustrators per video with more frequent videos might equate to the same effort in research, editing, etc., except downloading. Especially for us short attention spanners, one per week at the same time.

Hello again and is it my imagination or has it been a while? Thanks for the remarkably esoteric fact about the chimney sweep, and you may well be right about the numbers lark. On the othe hand I tried both 3 and 5 early on in the series and it didn't make any noticeable difference. Whatever the reason Im ploughing on regardless as befits my curmudgeonly status. And sadly the only vertically challenged illustrator I know about is Toulouse Lautrec. Now I think of it I should probably do a solo piece about him.
@vincentgoupil180
@vincentgoupil180 Жыл бұрын
@@petebeard Lautrec (Comte Henri Marie Raymond Toulouse-Lautrec-Montfa) would be a fun solo. With the exception of Boris Arty and the one previous to him, Jacob, have made non-memorable comments. Yea, carry on, hip hip Speaking of chimney sweepers for some reason I have an image of Dr. Suzannah Lipscomb (Absolute History) holding a poor sweep ... displaced fantasy, I guess

Hello and many thanks for your appreciation. I hate to disappoint but both these illustrators were born too late to qualify for inclusion. There's no reason you would have known this but the featured illustrators have to have been born between 1850 and 1910. And the other condition is they have to be no longer with us, which Mr. Schwab is. I'm sorry if this seems arbitrary but I felt I had to have some restrictions, and as it stands even with those restrictions I've still got more illustrators to feature than I have already. And I'm not getting any younger so I probably won't even finish the list. But if its any consolation if I can find an excuse to feature either in some other context I will.

1898 would be a year after Oscar Wilde was released from jail, so a little early for Lord Alfred Douglas to be accepted as a decent member of literary society. From Wikipedia: "The Belgian Hare is a "fancy" breed of domestic rabbit that has been selectively bred to resemble the wild European hare." So, a rabbit pretending to be a hare would be an obvious metaphor for a pseudonym. Though first imported to Britain in 1874, 1898 was the peak of the "Belgian hare boom". So, fancy and fashionable. Also "known for its slender and wiry frame and its long and powerful legs." I am not sure Alfred's legs were powerful, but otherwise a fitting spirit animal for the Aesthetic flibbertigibbet.

Hello and no I haven't. To be honest I'd never heard of him so thanks a lot for the information, and a quick google suggests he has some very pleasing work to see But - and it's a big one - he has the misfortune to still be alive and I only feature those who are no longer with us. And by the looks of his photo he'll probably outlive me.

It belatedly struck me that viewers might want to check who appears where so there's an index of sorts in the description box of unsung 75, and another in the same place for 76. I had to split them as there were too many to get in one place. The next will be posted when I hit 100.

Hello Pete from Ned in Mallorca Spain. My wife and I are both artists and love classic painting and illustration and love your videos. They're always beautifully done with a lot of background and research. I was wondering if you do something on these artists Ernesto El Chango Cabral, a Mexican legend of illustration and caricature, Max Klinger, Alfred Kubin and Lyonel Feininger. Looking forward to your next video. Thank you

Nice grouping, Max Klinger, Alfred Kubin, Lyonel Feinger. Would make a nice presentation except Alfred Kubin was included in Unsung Heros of Illustration: 18. And, Ernesto Garcia Cabral (Chango) was in UHI: 23. Might be of interest Serguis Hruby UHI: 69. Btw, USI 75 & 76 has a list of the first 75 presentations in their preface ... but Pete can tell you that :)

@@vincentgoupil180 Hey Vincent, thank you so much for the heads up. For some reason when I put in the names of both Kubin and Cabral in his channel's search, it said > No matches " probably because they were in a group video. Thanks again for the help.

@petebeard Жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks a lot for your appreciation of the channel. l see my pal Vincent has beaten me to it with a response , but there is a mistake in there - not sure how. I haven't yet featured Kubin but he is on the list of future candidates for the series. And so is Klinger. Lord knows when they will appear as they are towards the back of a terrifyingly long queue of others. Feininger I'm unsure about. Last tie I looked there was hardly any evidence at decent resolution of his illustration work, and from the perspective of the channel, art is somewhat peripheral. But he's right about Cabral, and about the list of those already covered.

@@petebeard Thank you for the kind reply Pete. I understand you've got a lot of other artists to present. I just watched the Unsung 23 episode and it had another favorite of mine George Studdy. I have a recent book on Bonzo that I bought in the UK, some Japanese made Bonzo salt n pepper shakers, an ashtray and my Dad's original skill game to get some rings over a bone balanced on his nose. Janet You're welcome and sorry for the wrong info on Alfred Kubin. Think Klinger and Kubin would be compatible for an Unsung Hero presentation if other Illustrators of kind could be found. H.R. Giger comes to mind but he was born 1940, too late for 1860-1920 requirement. Same for the painter Gustave Moreau, too early. Salvador Dali ? Don't know anything about Malloca except the You Tube "Gabriel Traveler" tours. Confuse the island with Matala, caves and artists, Joni Mitchell song.

Hello and no I didn't. On the other hand I'm not sure what you mean by juvenile magazines. I'm only aware of comics, although some of the earlier ones had short stories in too. Would you care to elaborate? I'd hate to miss out on a topic that's ripe for a video.

Hi Pete, short stories as well as longer stories published in episodes have always contributed to magazines for both the youth aswell as grown-ups. The illustrations were done by the best artists. Some went on to publish comic strips, others managed to combine the two artforms very well. It's really interesting for you to look into. Take a look at the website of The Book Palace, for instance.

Hello there, I have a question what is the difference between an illustrator, a cartoonist and a painter? Because for me it's the same thing. Thanks you
@petebeard
@petebeard Жыл бұрын
The Cambridge dictionary defines illustration as follows... a picture in a book, magazine, etc. or the process of illustrating something: a full-page illustration colour/black and white illustrations And this is my own not entirely foolproof acid test.. If it was made to hang on a wall it is art, if it has some other commercial purpose then it is illustration. I also think that the concept of mass reproduction plays an important part. With art there's either only the one image or if a print they are limited editions. Equally I'm well aware that in America in particular it's common to refer to fantasy art, concept art, background art etcetera. But as far as I'm concerned it is still illustration. That's all I've got.
