UP 844 Comes To St. Louis - 10.18.16

On Tuesday, October 18th, 2016, Union Pacific 4-8-4 #844 comes to St. Louis, Missouri on its "Trek to Tennessee" Tour. We first catch the special arriving in Pacific, Missouri where its stops to let the crowd take photos of the massive machine while maintenance is performed. Next, we catch it in the Sherman Park area of Ballwin, Missouri where it blasts by the grade crossing at St. Paul Road at track speed. Then we catch it again in St. Louis City at the Sublette Avenue crossing. Finally, it stops for the day in downtown St. Louis near Papin Street, where we catch a UP train of autoracks passing #844.

So, what's so special about the UP 8444? It's only a 4-8-4, while we now have the Big Boy, a 4-8-8-4. The very end days of steam locomotives in the US, were the very best days. There were huge 4-8-4 locomotives all over the United States, and they were the standard locomotive for our nation for a time. The articulated 4-8-8-4 and 4-6-6-4 locomotives were wonderful, but they were a rarity. For a time, the 4-8-4 was the standard, and that was something amazing.

Joe Offer In this day and age, any steam locomotive that still runs is special. The Union Pacific Railroad does an amazing job of keeping history alive, no matter the wheel arrangement! Also you might note that this video was taken in 2016, well before the Big Boy was operational again.

844 was never officially retired from service. The UP originally considered scrapping her, but decided instead to use her to power excursions. She is the only steam locomotive never to be retired by a Class I railroad.
