My girlfriend and I have been together since January of 2011. I always took pride in the fact that we were the couple that could solve things without fighting. We are both pretty mature people and the disagreements we have had throughout our relationship have been taken care of.
Now here comes the situation at hand. My girlfriend works in a job where it's basically her a bunch of women and this one guy. This one guy that works there is a real ladies man type guy, and my girlfriend is enamored by this guy. Nothing new, here I get it we have been in a relationship for a long time, and lusting after something new isn't bad.
Story 1:
[Update] Girlfriend[28f] wanted to have an open relationship, I[29m] broke up with her now she has gone insane.
Story 2:
Girlfriend [31F] wanted an open relationship. I [34M] reluctantly agreed. She freaked out now that I am sleeping with other women.

Part of the exclusivity talk I have with women mentions open relationships specifically. I am NOT and will NEVER be okay with an open relationship, an open relationship is the definition of NOT exclusive. I do not share, bring it up, and expect a break up because 1. I will doubt you from that point on because on one hand you obviously did not listen when we became serious and had the talk and 2. The very fact that you are mentioning it means you have someone in mind in a non-abstract form and want to fuck them, I see no reason to continue being in a relationship with someone who is thinking about sleeping with someone else.

I actually now a couple that is in an open relationship (don't know if that changed because of health issues both have). I was actually freaked out when her husband started flirting with me and asked her if it was ok with her and she said yes. Of course, in their case, the partner that the other person had chosen, had to meet with the other spouse. It was weird, but nice. Def not for me though. Just one night in bed with him, and then decided I'd rather be freinds. They are still together, but her health still wasn't that good for a while and he has his own problems too.

The first guy said “I had complaints about the relationship” so it sounds like there were some cracks in the foundation and her suggesting an open relationship was the last straw. He did not SHOW that he cared about her. He blamed her for all the problems, whilst taking no responsibility HIMSELF. Then, he has the nerve to say 'I had complaints'. The last story reminds me of another op who opened his marriage because the wife wanted to and the wife was having her fun for over a year before op met a really nice woman. Once the wife saw that he was smiling when texting or receiving a call from the new woman before that she didn't care that he was miserable during her "adventure" then she started to try to be the wife she was before. But it was too late he just did not see her as the woman he married anymore. She found out the manager she was seeing was only using her as a distraction but never thought of her seriously as he "loved" his fiance. Ruined her own relationship listening to her coworkers egg her on to have an open relationship.

I remember that story. The wife got jealous to the point of asking her husband what the other woman could do for him that she couldn't, that she would do it to close their marriage. He didn't answer her for what she could do. The other woman gave him back his dignity, self-respect, self-worth, confidence, emotional support/encouragement, she was a self-less giving lover, and made him think he could take on the world. Everything the wife threw away and denied her husband to go be with her crush. Play stupid games, win wonderfully stupid prizes. Opening marriages/relationships is USUALLY(not always, by some cosmic fluke some people make it work) just a coward's way of ending a relationship because one or both are afraid to be alone or don't want to be labeled a cheater because they lack self control and morals.

If your girlfriend says she lusts someone else or wants an open relationship, she is already emotionally disconnected from you and has been so for at least a few months. They ponder this for some time (othen with the help and encouragement from their "friends" or even after having initiated). You're now her her safety net. Either her plan B or her stable but now boring emotional provider. The worst part is that she does somewhat love you in a twisted kind of way as you are still the guy who will drop everything for her while she can search for attention, novelty and tingles elsewhere. No man want to be that guy. So don't feel sorry for her or yourself. The women you loved died the minute that idea got engrained in her head. Move on and be happy with someone more deserving.

Ex brought this up towards the end of the relationship (I'm pretty sure she was cheating but I never snooped). We started talking about it and I was uncomfortable so I asked her questions like who she'd sleep with and if she had anyone in mind. She kept mentioning guys from work. I could tell she was turned on by it and was excited that it seemed I was into it. She got this glazed look in her eye and an accompanying blush at the thought of sleeping with these dudes regardless of my presence. The moment I started talking about girls I would bang, (some of them were her coworkers) and other girls who were close to me that she hated, her countenance changed and she shot down the idea. Apparently, the mental image of me with other women didn't sit well with her so she got upset and said it was a stupid idea. Lol. Apparently only she could step out and no other woman had the right to desire me in return. Her behavior before, during and after our relationship was basically,*"I should go out and have fun with other guys but I want you around because you're the only one who cares about me and my family loves you"*. 2 years later and my life is much better while she is on Tinder doing whatever.

@@lolly166541 I may be old-fashioned, and it could be my Christian faith chatting. But even before it didn't make sense. A wedding is joining of two families to one, two people join to become one (a child). Once you get married you have both agreed to stay together and be each other's, only partner. Open-relationships don't make sense, if you want to sleep around just be single and talk to your friends. I see no difference between fwb and open-relationships I don't get it. It just demonstrates a lack of self-control so this a loop-hole. Commitment issues as you are unable to commit to one person the rest of your life. If you want to do it, then go ahead, just don't call it bf/gf thing or a husband/wife thing. There are numerous stories of couples being monogamous with children involved. Some don't even hide it. Who knew that pulling the rug out from under your partner by changing the terms of the relationship is risky busniess. A functional polyamorous relationship starts as one with consent from all partys and with clear boundaries in place. Changing a relationship from mono to poly is like throwing four dices and hoping they all land on six. It can happen. But you better have a long hard think and decide if the slim odds of winning justify the near certainty of your partner leaving.

Yea, it's just like BDSM and stuff. You can introduce your partner (if you have experience) to the Idea, explaining it to them from your point of view, what you hope to gain from it, what the relationship could gain from it etc. If the person doesn't want it, then you move on; Either with a new partner *or* with a middle ground where both people feel comfortable. If she likes being the Rope Bunny but he doesn't like tying the partner up because he's not in to it or he's scared - maybe start with like Handcuffs to the bedpost. But as he was against it from the beginning and only agreed to not wanting to hurt his girl - it was prone to fail. That's not how these things work.

I was in a similar situation some odd years back. Things were fine when it first started then she suggests we have an open relationship out of the blue. I had surmised that she already had another person lined up and just wanted to have permission to cheat without guilt while still being with me until she eventually break off the relationship. She also thought I wouldn't be able to find anyone, forgetting how I ended up getting her in the first place. So, I started talking to her "best friend" at the time who hated me.. at first, but only because she was bi and liked my ex as well. Then the more we talked, the more she grew to like me, which lead to her admitting to liking me and wanting something more. So we fucked around for a bit but she felt guilty because while we had the go-ahead, we didn't tell the ex that we were screwing around. We tell the ex, but as it turns out, the ex was rejected by the other guy she wanted so she was incredibly jealous and upset- thus lead to her demanding to call the open relationship off, with her being mad at both me and the best friend for "betraying" her trust.. I laughed it off and said she was the one that suggested it in the first place and went ahead and called both relationships off. None of us are on speaking terms anymore and while I'm not all that proud of the way I handled things, I am happy that I stood up for myself. She tried to pull a fast one on me, but I was better at the game.

I rarely heard of open relationships until this past year and now it seems that women have gone nuts for this as a way to cheat on their SO without "cheating", usually secure in the knowledge that the guy won't be able to find anyone while she goes out and does whoever she had her eyes on. It is funny when I read about guys either dumping them for even suggesting it or being more successful than them at finding new partners. I would recommend that you just dump her as she has already shown you what her character is and will cheat on you sometime in the future. As a side note, women seem to be going out of control with their lust. I'm reading on Reddit about 19 year olds with a 50+ body count and women that married early thinking that they missed out on all the "fun" of getting pumped and dumped. I thank God that I'm too old to care about women any more as I'd hate to be participating in this mess.

Well my question would be "How open is an 'open relationship' ". I can't see a problem with an open relationship if everything is "open", including, no cohabitation/key exchanges, no joint accounts, no crossing of "passwords", having scheduling in advance for dates/excursions, keeping friend pools as separate as possible, time-limited communication, etc. Now, you might say "Hey, wait, that sounds like 'no relationship at all' " ... and you would be right. So my point is, for those of you who are dense in interpretation of written language, if a relationship is TRULY open, there is no relationship, and if she suggests it, its a one way door for her to keep all of the important advantages of a relationship, while having her most important responsibilities and commitments waived.

@@elyeliza8287 My guess is that you read a book on relationships, and not a very good one at that. Everybody here knows what "open" means, in the modern frame of reference, and my diatribe is illustrating the necessity of making it truly "open" given the open "sex thing". Crudely put, "pussy" can be available now days to just about any man willing to, at the least, fake the predominate conditions women seek. What fun is that in the long run ? Wouldn't it be nice to have a viable companion who is willing to provide meaning in a relationship of sufficient quantity/quality to offset her natural "drive to drama/self-destructiveness". She would of course have to self moderate (there's no societal restraints to her anymore) based on your guidance on that front, as an adjunct to you self moderating the more unacceptable aspects of your own personality flaws, based on her reasonable guidance. Its like that very rare, "olden times" concept of "build each other up" But the big question is "Where are you going to find one of those unicorns ?".

The open relationships that I've seen work generally started out as open relationships. Both partners are into open relationships in general, and this was the understanding from the word go. Monogamous relationships that are suddenly "opened" usually involve one partner who was just playing along to maintain the relationship. And in these cases, the partner wanting to open the relationship often actually just wanted to have an affair with a particular person, and figured it wouldn't be so bad if s/he let the other partner have some fun too. Eventually, the "playing along" partner realizes this was just window dressing on an affair, not a serious polyamorous relationship. And the relationship breaks up.

No. 1 was trying to monkey branch but he pulled his branch away before she had another one firmly in her grasp. As another commenter pointed out, an open relationship is an oxymoron. If you aren't monogamous, then you aren't in a relationship. What people don't seem to understand is that the only thing that makes someone special is the time you have shared with them. All these people obsessed with hook up are basically people who just keep playing the tutorial in a video game over and over again. Relationships are more than just "thrills." At the end of the day, the happiest memories are the "dull" times that you didn't appreciate in the moment. Any two people can bond while having fun, but it's the bonding that happens during boredom and routine that means something. Today, I'd rather be able to relive one quiet meal with my grandparents than relive all my sexual encounters. Anyone who doesn't understand this can never succeed in any relationship.

My friend keeps trying to have open relationships with women who have never done them. They have failed every time.

When op said he thinks ppl will tell him he's at fault for "giving up on the relationship" i was like: No dude, you didn't give up on the relationship. You simply stated your boundaries, and she didn't respect those. You made the right call

I always found it weird how certain groups of people entertain, promote, and even swear that open relationships are the way to go. Why even bother being in a relationship if all you want are friends with benefits?

Story 1: it's likely she was already stepping out with someone else and the open relationship was to alleviate some guilt. Story 2: she's only mad because he found better lays. She wanted a guy to provide and a guy to ride. He should just dump her already, but keep the fwb's.

I don't think I've ever seen a situation where someone asking their partner for an "open relationship" isn't anything other than a death knell for that relationship. It's going to end, you're just dragging it out and pretending it's not already over. Just break it off cleanly, so you can do what you want with other people with a clear conscience.

Second story: The OP misunderstood what the gf meant by an "open relationship". Only she was supposed to screw other people. He was meant to stay at home and live like a monk until she got bored/got dumped. Amazing how often the open relationship backfires on the one who wanted it when their partner realises they can do better.

Once a gf of mine broke up with me. On my very first date with another girl and going someplace I've never been to before, I ran into her. I think it’s funny how the person who suggests the open relationship idea is only thinking at their wants of sleeping with others without the guilt but don’t want their s/o sleeping with others and fail to realize that’s what a open relationship is having multiple sex partners on both sides not just one

If my gf would ever ask me for an open relationship the first thing I will tell/ask her is: "Sure, if you want that, but I hope you can handle the thought of other women making me happy, maybe even happier than you." I feel like a lot of people suggest an open relationship without considering their partner actualyl going ot there and getting some. and when they realize their partner enjoys the new dynamic/has more fun with their partners than them, they suddenly get jealous. sometimes even accusing of cheating and ruining their relationships.

That is good, but most guys are fully aware that the cops will arrest them if a woman points towards them in a DV situation. A woman can get away with this 9/10 times unless it is REALLY BAD. Most guys learned that gathering evidence and/or ghosting is just better. The guys who do strike are already messed up individuals that dont care about jail.

No judgement for those that do, but me personally I could never do an open relationship especially if it seemed based off a crush. He made the right decision. I would have gave the shirts and receipt back and tell her to get her money back. She wouldn’t stay loyal if she pressed that hard about it and would eventually breaks. He needs to change all his passwords and if she gets crazy get a restraining order.

My situation is more complicated, but if it was common relationship if she brought this up I would have broken it off on the spot. May as well agree to it, make sure she understands that "open relationship" is "for thee AND me" and go live life. The relationship is over...

Rule number 1 to any relationship, RESPECT THEIR BOUNDARIES AND RESPECT LINES THAT ARE DRAWN. If your partner doesn't want an open relationship, that means they don't want an open relationship at all. Bringing it up even once when you're supposedly dedicated to your partner is sus as hell too because no one ever suggests an open relationship unless they already found an extra body. I've laid down lines with my lady that I've been dating for 8 years and still going strongly. She respected those lines I drew and I respected her lines that she drew. We also made it a deal that if either of us ruin trust in one another, our relationship is permanently over and there's no going back. When your lady or man respect your wishes and don't wish to ruin your trust, you know you've got an amazing relationship.
