As a follow up to last week's video (where Bob showed his son how to restart a 6010 root downhill) we are going to do the same going downhill. Bob is going to watch a student make a 6010 uphill root weld with a restart and then talk him through what happened and how he can fix it.
The mistakes made in this video are common to many welders and the intention is to show you what can go wrong and how to fix it.

My hat is off to you for putting your kids (as a teacher, they're all "your kids") on camera to perform. It takes a lot to do that, it takes a lot of confidence in them and from their side. They must have a lot of confidence in themselves and in you for what you have taught them. Great job Spencer and keep at it!!! You're in good hands man; you've got a good teacher that cares about yall. Thanks Bob for the content!! Again, my hat is off to you for putting your kids on camera. Gives them exposure as well as showing beginners out there that the issues they are having, are normal and this is how you work through them. Would like to see more content like this.

I couldn't agree more. Putting the students on camera is likely one of the best teaching aids. This is next level shit. A+++ to Bob for doing it and the students for being up for it!

Great video for open root plate! I love the new style of video with students and troubleshooting while while welding. If this video had been around when I was doing open root in school I would have learned it a lot quicker. Great video!

Yeah, I second that one. Love watching Bob welding and listing to his comments and instruction. If I weren't so old I would run up to OK, if I could find it, and take a class. Keep making those video's Bob, we love watching them!

I like these formats, its great to see a professional do something, but I think there's the potential to learn a lot by seeing inexperience play out. How not to do something... or at least how something could be done better. It'd be cool to see the welds these guys do now and then when they graduate!

Hope this kid appreciates the instructor he's got. Gain as much knowledge as you can. Some guys in my class would be goofing around in class, waiting to get out and go bum around the nearby Tim Horton's. Meanwhile I would regularly sit in the library reading everything from electrical theory to chemistry and metallurgy to proper techniques for whatever was on my mind that day. We had an intro welding course. First time I ran a fillet weld with an E7018, I showed my work to the instructor and he said, "I see you like that rod." Once you get out into the working world, you will appreciate the time spent learning.

Your certainly a good teacher. Can I ask if you could quickly answer a question for me, I'm sure, considering I do do a fair bit of welding that I should know, but why in this video did he not do a restart using the rest of the rod? There was more than enough left to finish that run. Does the rod become somehow unstable or unreliable? Or is it a flux issue? Or is it just a reg that should be followed?

Oh, one other thing I wanted to ask too, I'm in Australia by the way, I picked up a box of schwiesstechnik rods the other day from a market. These rods were 'dc' only low hydrogen. Tried them out on dads old copper core AC transarc. No chance. Stuck like glue. Over and over. On my BOC 170 dc inverter, no problem. Not great on restarts, seem to create a deep crater and hard to strike after. Is that common on dc rods? I've never seen dc only rods before. Or is it just that they are shagged? They look ok.
@bobmoffatt4133
@bobmoffatt4133 6 жыл бұрын
Most lo-hy rods are hard to re strike.

I've been trying to get back into the open root stick welding game. I can run downhill generally well with minimal issues 1/8 6010 80 amps. 3/32 root and root face. Uphill gets me. I can't seem to just run it straight, it blows up the root. If I stitch it it goes better. Same 3/32 root and root face. 80 amps it blows up, 75 amps it wants to freeze and stick on me. Any suggestions?

thats how you should always restart when welding open root, you start back on the weld to get it heated up and red that way when you get to your stop you get full penetration instead of a lil crevice
