In this video I show the machine that I made and our company uses for cleaning stainless steel after welding. A few things to note is that this will not work if the stainless is oxidized (Has a layer of black on top of it). The transformer is a 150va 120x12/24v step down, purchased from Automation Direct. The light bulb and socket are simply purchased from Home Depot and the wand was cut out of a piece of stainless tubing. a switch, also from Home Depot was purchased and a fan from amazon was laying around the shop to keep it all cool. The transformer winding was wired in series with the light bulb, allowing the light bulb to act as a current limiting device. This works because as the light bulb heats up the resistance increases, but the resistance at 120v is high enough to not permit more than 150 watts through.

I do hope you have spare bulbs on hand. With the way industry is going for incandescent lamps I understand these have been phased out of production. Have you tried measuring the resistance of the bulb and tried locating one of the huge ceramic resistors of the same value at 150 watts power? Might even try locating a 150 watt wire wound resistor at the same ohms as the lamp that come in the metal case. Use high quality heatsink compound and mount it to the cabinet. You could even find a large surplus aluminum heatsink and mount it to the case behind the resistor to help dissipate the heat. Might even try adding an inrush current limiter on the high side as well to smooth out the initial power surge. Love the stainless work!

I used a home made one of these about 10 years ago, I measured the voltage, approximately 36-40vac, 12 amps, output, 120vac input, solution was phosphoric acid from Home Depot, "it was fast", I like the 150watt light bulb trick, I guess u could use 2 light bulbs in parallel if u want more watts? GREAT VIDEO

A 24 volt 5 amp transformer with no light bulb works very well. It pretty much self limits as the acid solution on the brush can only pass a limited amount of current. 24 volts is faster acting than 12.

It's made of carbon fiber and googling "carbon fiber brush" showed those old things for cleaning LP records. The hairs on those are shorter but I think they are folded inside so if you break it apart, you could get longer hairs that you then can put inside a small tube and press the end of the pipe. At least around here, I think I can find a record cleaning brush in a music store.

While visiting some metal working friends in Germany, they showed me an electrolitic cleaner that uses salt water (forgott to ask wich salt they used, but wasnt acidic). Their machine was more than 20 yo, and it worked fine and fast. Do you have any idea of that? Nice project, since I can't find such small machine here in Brasil, I will try and build one of those! Thanks for the video!

I have used salt water with regular salt water (NaCl) on stainless steel but that was not for cleaning a weld but to etch the surface. I masked letters with tape and etched with a cotton swab and a 12 V battery. If the surface is shiny from the beginning, it will turn dull by etching. Don't remember if it was plus or minus on the swab. Search for electro etching if you're interested. The acid he uses here is dilute phosphoric acid. The only thing I wonder is if it has to be AC. DC would be easy to get from a car battery or two.
@smaqdaddy

It's probably the same type knifemakers use to etch their logos on knives. You use DC to electropolish your logo through a stencil, AC to darken it.
@skunkjobb
@skunkjobb 4 жыл бұрын
Why not just use two car batteries connected in series? You use AC but on en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electropolishing it says that it's done with DC with plus connected to the work piece. Have you found any benefit with AC or is it only that a transformer is cheaper than a transformer+rectifier?

@@frankz1125 Traditional pickling acid does this job without electricity but that's wit a mixture of nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid. That's really nasty stuff that you should neither breath in or get on your skin. I mean really really bad. This process with electricity lets you do the same trick with a quite harmless acid, dilute phosphoric acid. That's the point. And while the traditional stuff is only sold in special welding shops (don't know if they require some licence, some workplaces have banned the stuff from safety reasons), phosphoric acid is readily available, e.g. as "rust eater" which you can dilute with water.

You know you can just use a cheap stick welder to do this. Just buy the polishing brush in your connection type and you can use there fluid. But 90% of the cost is the actual machine. I have a set up at my parents place that I just swap the leads over when I'm using my tig welder. My tig is a multi purpose tig. So tig stick and plasma.

Can you do a video on stainless welding that's considered food safe? I'm interested in making some custom muffin baking tins for my mom's bakeshop.
@HighTechLab
@HighTechLab 5 жыл бұрын
Potentially. Typically it's more of the material and design and how you finish the welds that makes it sanitary/food safe, but yeah I can talk about that
@kalleklp7291
@kalleklp7291 5 жыл бұрын
Practically any higher grade stainless steel is food grade. The welding rods used should be higher grade than the material anyway. So normal 304 will do for such a project.

@@kalleklp7291 The local food inspector, who is not a welding expert, and neither am I, said that either the gasses or filler material used can have cadmium in it which makes it toxic. I'm just an auto body guy that is used to doing stainless might welding and some oxy acetylene welding. I have a friend with a bake shop that asked me if I can make some custom cupcake tins, so this is why I ask this. I fully accept that the food inspector may not know what he is talking about, I just want to make sure.

@@mindthependulum6245 I don't know what type of gas you have. However, I can assure you none of the commonly available gasses for TIG welding contain cadmium. Cadmium is a heavy metal and highly undesirable in the food industry. Filler material i.e. rods for work on food-grade items don't contain any cadmium. All stainless steel filler rods are free from cadmium. I think what he heard about where some rods used for brazing which can contain Cd. One wouldn't use these rods for such work. Brazing and TIG welding are two different processes. So be at ease and just continue your project. :) Btw..I'm a blacksmith, machinist and professional welder for almost 30 years now. Done a lot of work for the food industry and also build my own still, which requires even more from the materials and welding methods used, as chemical compounds in gas form are involved together with higher temperatures.
@guytech7310
@guytech7310 4 жыл бұрын
Brazing Rods may contain cadmium but It would be very unusual for Stainless TIG rods any toxic additives. Stainless TIG rods are usually pure SS 309 which is food safe. Not sure how you would go about making custom Cupcake tins since the cups are usually wider at the top and narrow at the bottom. You would not be able to use SS pipe to make them. Usually Cupcake tins are made in a press.
