had my Tesla MY since Aug 2023 in UK. every bit of this video is accurate and reflective of reality. I only have one comment to make about cost of home charging. now, this is something 99% of youtube/tech reviewers get wrong, but this guy and this particular video is so accurate that i feel it should be noted for completeness. cost of home charging on a cheap overnight EV tariff (like intelligent octopus in the UK): add 15% to the numbers quoted by Simon in this video, when charging at home on an overnight ev tariff. why? several reasons below 1. kWh going into the battery is not the same as kWh consumed by the charger. charging is ~93-95% efficient due to AC to DC conversion. so put in 60kWh in the cars battery, your house will have consumed ~64kWh (that is what you are getting charged for). so thats is extra electricity 2. if you use a Tesla car the way it is supposed to, esp during cold winter days and warm summer days, you are preconditioning the car (and the battery) for 20-30 mins before leaving home to get max range and comfort out of it. this is esp true for those with kids, from a comfort point of view. during preconditioning time the car easily draws ~2000-3000Watts/hour, and since this *typically* occurs outside the cheap overnight rate time period, you have extra electricity draw of maybe 1500W x2 once a day. over a month this adds up. admittedly there are ways to mitigate this, with smart charging and scheduled departure etc, but realistically when you drive to pick the kids up from school, this is going to cost you. this extra electricity is often unaccounted for as it does show up as battery percentage. same applies when preconditioning the car using its battery energy when you are out and return home. you consume maybe 1% battery, but you havent moved an inch, you just warmed up the car. 3. when on an cheap overnight tariff, you are paying relatively higher rate (vs the electricity cap or other average tariff) for daytime electricity. your electricity provider has done the math, they are not stupid. so although you might be able to say that "i charge my car at 7.5p/kWh", the flip side is that "your oven doesnt cook at 25p/kWh (or whatever the average is for consumers), but instead your oven cooks at 31.5p/kWh". thats a hidden cost of electricity, which again is not accounted for. to put it in another way, if you get 30pounds in petrol coupons to use at a supermarket fuel station, by buying groceries at the same supermarket, and you fill up your tank and pay 50 instead of 80pounds, you havent *really* paid 50 for fuel. its just that part of the cost of that fuel is hidden in your groceries bill. admittedly, with a level 2 charger, and heavy car use, you can reach the break even point for your electricity provider, but i suspect, most people dont, as one prob needs to do 100-150 miles on average daily of home charging to really take advantage of overnight ev tariffs. this can vary a lot with individual circumstances 4. even a very optimised tesla (sentry mode off etc etc), there will still be some "phantom drain". probably in the order of 100-200w/hour. overtime this again can add up. 5. there are other marginal electricity costs. ie when navigating to a supercharger and preconditioning the battery. the extra energy goes to warm up the battery and enable fast (high triple digit) DC supercharging, but does not add anything to your range. if you did not precondition, you would arrive at the supercharger with higher battery % but colder battery, thus unable to charge as fast. in this case, you pay some extra cost of electricity, to save you (and others) time when supercharging. is it worth it? 100%. is it a hidden electricity cost? also 100% now all the above is being said, purely from an educational point of view for prospective buyers. the overall conclusion stands, that EVs (esp Teslas which are very efficient EVs) are significantly cheaper to run vs ICE. and in the end of the day, lets be practical, if you are buying a 50.000 pound new car, the extra cost the above adds up to, is going to be negligible. overall, for RSEVSimon, although one can assume bias in his reviews (he sells EV cars after all), i have found that he is very knowledgeable about Teslas and actually his videos are not biased. which is rare these days on youtube. thats why i specifically chose to use his referral code when i bought my Tesla, to reward him for this fact keep up the good work and always be on the look out for rain ruining your hairstyle!

Had my Y a year with zero problems and had a M3 for 2 years before with zero problems. Perfect car if you ask me and so cheap to run.

Been driving FSD V12.3 for a day now (Canada), you will loose your mind when you get this in Europe. Total game changer.

1.5 months into owning a 2nd hand Blue Model Y Perf with the white interior and absolutely love it. The most fun is taking people for a spin and seeing their reactions to the acceleration!

Bought a Model Y LR about a year ago after two new Ioniq 5s which had recurring problems with random warning lights. This review is spot on. The ride is very harsh at low speeds but on fast roads and motorways it is superb. The windscreen wipers were designed on April 1st but other than that I can't fault the car. I've owned cars for 50 years and this is by far the best I've ever had. With quite a bit of motorway driving I have averaged 4 miles per kwh over the whole year.

Loving my Model Y so far. Heard you mention insurance costs, that was my comment from another video, I went from a Ford Focus to the Model Y so my insurance went up threefold! I have actually removed my partial shelf as I found this to be the cause of the booming sound coming from the back of the car when driving on uneven surfaces, seems much quieter inside the cabin now. I have the standard car, don’t do many miles really, just school runs and shopping etc with occasional trips to our caravan in North Wales. I have a supercharger on my doorstep at Trentham so for me at least charging and range anxiety is just not a thing. I upgraded my wheels to the 20” turbines, omg you only have to go near a kerb with them and they’ll be scuffed so be extra careful when parking. Brilliant family car, loads of space, great to drive (1 pedal driving is a game changer), firm sporty ride which I like but recommend you take a test drive first to make sure you can live with it, comfortable quiet cabin, minimalist design with single screen and the best sound system I’ve ever had in a car. I think if you’re coming from premium like Range Rover or Mercedes etc it might not feel like an upgrade but for me coming from the Focus (and that was a great car) to my first electric car this was definitely the right choice for me 😊

I got my model Y LR in December and I’ve found it fantastic. It’s my first EV too. Spacious and very comfortable and very very quick!!!

My parents have just bought a Model Y LR last month, and coming from 10 years with many different high end Audi’s, the Model Y just felt so much nicer in quality and much nicer to drive too for a car that costs less than most of the Audi’s they have owned. As well as that, the very low maintenance costs and fuel savings are really nice factors and I can definitely see them going for Tesla again after this Model Y!

I tried the Model Y as well as the older Model 3. Suspension on old Model 3 with a bad neck is not good and the Model Y is far better. However, after testing the Model 3 Highland, the new suspension is incredible and it is so quiet. So I have ordered one! This is great information. Thank you Richard

The parcel shelf has also changed on the later models. It has an extra fold in it, making easier to retract, fold and remove.

Model Y is 15 months old, 27k miles, runs like a dream, super cheap to run. Best car I have ever had (that is 20 cars BTW) by a long way. The only other car I would consider is another model Y after the refresh. Thanks for all the great content Richard, always learn something from you.

Had my rwd 12 months and it’s just clocked 10k miles today! The only issues I’ve had have been a boot seal which caused a squeaky rattle. Known issue apparently as mine got a modified seal. During winter when the temp was low single flights I was seeing a range of more like 200 miles on the motorway. Love the car but the firm ride does enhance the rattles and the ride is definitely worse in the rear. The performance of the RWD is amazing though, more than enough to have a bit of fun or squirt into gaps in traffic. My overall efficiency is about 3.8 m/kwh but that should now improve now the sun is out more.

I really do see the appeal of the model Y and electric cars as a whole. I recently test drove a Model Y long range from Tesla Ferndown as I live in Christchurch and I was really impressed with the fit and finish of the car but the performance blew me away. So fast for a big spacey SUV. If I had the money, I would buy one no questions asked. They can only get better as time goes on as well. I had no idea you guys were in New Milton. Great to see that you are local to me. Keep the good videos coming.

I just had two rear knuckles and two front outer bearings replaced under warranty with 39,000 miles on the clock. It’s a heavy car and our U.K roads are crumbling. Suspension aside the car has been superb.

(Posting before watching) I bought a used 2017 Tesla Model S bc it was the same price as slightly newer with similar mileage M3, and it’s just a better car IMO. And in the USA, we get a used EV tax credit, if less than $25k. 🏆 I concede that everyone’s needs & preferences are different, and I considered the pros of the M3 & MY, the MS just made sense for me. Happy buying, everyone!

Love my Model Y. I also loved my Model S before, which had free supercharging for life. The only reason I traded in the Model S was the door handle wiring harness failed and the handles didn’t retract. Quoted over £600 by Tesla to replace the harness. I had already spent £1200 replacing all 4 door handles with latest generation handles. Just constant door handle problems so I bought a Model Y (with normal door handles). Awesome cars. I’ll never go back to ICE for a daily driver (and I’m a true V8 petrolhead)

The only issue I have with my Y is the turning circle...OMG it needs a lot of space.

Had my Y Standard Range just over a year. Excellent car, very efficient - 215 wh/mile. Had a problem with the cruise control dropping out on motorway journeys but it seems to have either been fixed by a software update or got used to my driving style. Looking forward to the lights and rain sensor being fixed. All very minor gripes. Everything else is great.

Had our Model Y LR a year in May, 10k miles (£450, 87% home charged), no issues or annoyances, just great performance, handling, comfort and space for us and our dogs. Wasn't keen on wood trim but the RSEV alcantara conversion fixed that. Ours has the black 20" alloys and I put a performance lip spoiler on it, even its looks are good 😉

Only gripe is the lack of a speed limiter. OK it is possible to set a warning that will make the speed on the display pulse slightly or (very annoying) sound a bleep. I live in Wales so 20mph limits are all over the place - my previous Zoe had a limiter and it took so much stress out of driving round towns - no bleeps, no pulsating displays, you knew from the feedback on the accelerator pedal that you had reached the limit. Otherwise, Model Y is really good.

Great review / buyers guide. I have an early UK white Y with parking sensors and no boot parcel shelf. Really pleased with it - best car I've ever had. Dual motor long range - 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds is more than fast enough for me. I also like the standard fat tyres which are less likely to curb / damage your alloys.

Had our Model Y for two years now and to date it’s been completely faultless. I like the minimalist approach and have no issues using it, things you’d expect to be more difficult like adjusting volume of the radio are actually really simple even without the steering wheel control just put your finger on the bottom left hand side of the screen and move left or right - you don’t have to hit an exact spot. It’s different to other cars but once you get used to it I think it’s actually better sort of an Apple moment.

Even though I’m watching from the US I’ve enjoyed your Tesla reviews! I’m eventually going to buy a Tesla I’m planning to wait until the market settles down. I really appreciate your comments about the white paint. I see mostly (probably 85-90%) grey near my home in a Detroit suburb. Thanks!

As an owner of a 22plate MYLR (second batch to arrive in UK) I agree entirely with your comments. I've driven mine to the North of Norway from near London and it was a pleasure with absolutely no charging issues - other than making sure I attempted to get into the correct car when returning from getting a coffee! (White MYs are extremely common over there! ) I had one UNUSUAL failure recently when the main interface screen randomly failed- a serious problem on a software dependent vehicle! Pleased to say that after a short wait for spares this was quickly replaced by Tesla Tottenham under warranty and while they had it I paid a very reasonable amount to get the brakes serviced and air filters replaced. (As I rarely use the conventional brakes I thought the brake service was worthwhile ) The recent activation of the matrix headlights is amazing and now the hope is that the wipers may also get sorted!

Can’t fault my model Y does everything you want a car to do.

I've got a '23' MYLR. Also had the seat sensor fault, but since then, no problems. Great car! Fun to drive, comfortable on road trips. Trip planning is marvelous and easy to use. I'm happy to recommend one to people who are looking to purchase an EV.

A good video and I agree with most of the points. I've had my 72-reg MYLR (blue) for just over 18 months and love it. The only gripes I have are: 1. The software's panicked squawking and steering-wheel grabbing when Autopilot's not engaged. 2. The software's unnecessary braking, unerring aim at potholes, and tendency to give back control when Autopilot _is_ engaged. 3. The headlight and windscreen wiper problems described in the video. I always control the headlight beams manually anyway now as I can usually see that another vehicle's _about_ to come round the corner ahead whereas the MY waits until the other headlights are shining straight at it. (I've not received the matrix software update yet.) 4. The USB ports in the centre console aren't connected to the infotainment system, so I can't play my USB stick of favourite music unless I ditch the dashcam stick in the glovebox. As the car has two phone charging pads, the 4 USB ports not in the glovebox are essentially pointless. 5. Some swine in a car park dinked the driver's door when the car was just ten days old. I don't find the firm ride a problem. The easy way to remove the parcel shelf is to lift the inner end to release the lugs and then slide the shelf out. Slide it in lug end first to replace it.

Coming up to a year of ownership and 19000km, with a tour from the Netherlands to Scotland last December. Also a couple of work trips to the south of Germany, with 3 colleagues in the car (butts in seats). My electricity price at home has been near the price of the (local) superchargers. The highs were €0.70 and the low prices are now ~€0.27. The price per kilometer, with a heavy right foot, comes to 7.7ct. Gas savings are about 50-60%. The software update just recently added the matrix headlights, but also the green indicator dots on screen have changed to arrows, which is nice.

The rain sensor wipers are a bit like training a toddler. Wipe when they don't need to, don't wipe when they need to 😅

I love this car. My 2022 model Y doesn't like short sharp bumps but ride quality is great on the motorway. It is a hard car to fault. Seats extremely comfy but perhaps too soft for the performance/handling on offer. Mine is red with the 20" upgrade wheels and have added Gtechniq ceramic paint protection, although the paint still seems to chip easily. Keep up the good work RSEV, you guys are nailing these reviews.

Very good video thanks. I picked up my Model Y LR from Southampton docks in late March 2023 and it's been fault free in nearly 10k miles. I'd always assumed it has comfort suspension as the ride is no worse than the iPace it replaced. Just had the adaptive beams update and waiting for auto wipers to improve. I tend to use voice commands to control the wipers manually so not a big deal. Two trips across France with no sweat. Love it!

Very detailed and accurate. I own a 2024 SR version in white colour, and all I can say is - thanks for this. The only maintenance I've hard to do is top up my wiper fluid 😅. Not washed it yet, as white hardly shows markings and dirty. But I ensure to keep my interior very clean and smelling nice. It's just 3 months old plus and only done 2,184 miles. Someone must have opened their car door on it, so I just got a minute unnoticeable dimple. It's towards the left back passenger door and no scratch to the paint, but it hurts 😢😂 like I'm the one that got a boboo😂. I love my MY, and I named her ~Chérie ❤.

I am a long time Tesla owner, and recently purchased a brand new Model Y Performance for USD 42,900 after rebates, incentives, and tax credit. This is the first Model Y I have owned, and I love it. Coming from a 2018 Model 3 Performance, the most notable change is the range- the Y is superior. I can drive around with the climate control on and not have to worry about energy bleed, especially when it is cold out. I think it was a good idea to reduce the EPA-rated range because now the vehicle gives you the most accurate mileage. Recently I drove from Northern Kentucky to Dayton, OH- a total round trip distance of 163 miles. I left out at 80% (or 220 miles) and returned with 23% (63 miles remaining) That means I beat the EPA rated range by six miles travelling at an average 70 mph :)

Hello, great video again, so informative and practical. One question, haven’t seen any notification on software update for headlights. Our Model Y LR was one of the very first into UK from China. Does this mean the car doesn’t have the required hardware or am I just missing something? Any help much appreciated.

Ive now had LR for a year, driven 27000 km myself. Ive got a big dog and honestly been a perfect car, no issues. Too bad price drops fucked me up, but just means I wont sell the car.

5 months into MY RWD ownership and can’t fault it. Firm ride but not harsh and auto wipers not great but there are other settings that do the job. Tesla vision is now very good. Still look forward to driving it, something I’ve not said much about other cars over the years.

Hi Richard, thanks for another great video. I’m interested in a used MY standard range; I only need RWD. However, I do enjoy music and radio on the move, and appreciate sound quality. Can you expand slightly on the lower spec sound system in the SR please.

Bought one of the very first ones coming to Norway, done 120000 km in around 2,5 yrs. Only maintenance so far is wiper blades and wiper fluid. -30 degrees C shortens it's range but it does always start and is ready to go which was always troublesome in my old fossil.

My whipers m3 MIC 2021 LFP have made a MAJOR leap 2 weeks ago. Day and night difference. Way more agressive finally.

I’m due to change tyres on my model Y running geminis, I’ve noticed a huge price difference between the recommended 255/45/19 and 255/50/19 can you envisage any issues running the 50s?

What are your thoughts on the new colours coming to the UK? A sign of Berlin produced model y coming to the UK?

Good video, not any mention of battery state of health, many lease cars are basically only rapid charged and never slow charged. Does this mean faster battery range degredation?

3:15 Pleased to hear this. I had a Mar’22 MY and it was as harsh as a skateboard, glad to know the later cars didn’t improve. I sold my MY in an effort to minimise further depreciation and in preparation for the Juniper refresh (we were in the process of replacing my other half’s ICE car so I decided to liquidate assets). We ended up with a Skoda Enyaq, the ride is better than the MY but the handling isn’t a patch on the MY. They are both very heavy cars. I do miss my MY and although apparently the plan was we were going to have an Enyaq and a Leaf, I’ve decided I have to get back into a Tesla so looking for a ‘21 MIC SR+ M3 with tow hitch (in Grey) - if anyone is selling. ;-)

Moisture in the back lights is often due to using jet washers. Wash by hand at home with a gentle hose people. 2020 m3 dry back lights.

Good review and useful info on the Model Y. Wooden strip is so American, just look at old estate cars with fake wood even on the outside. There are really good after market add ons for Tesla cars. I would add a body kit and carbon fibre and have the interior wood painted or wrapped. Tesla steering wheels are not as nice as Audi or Cupra. Model Y from front does look like a deer. Red looks nice. Tesla Insurance 3 times cost of my EV and no one mentions that EV batteries will need replacing after 10 years approximately.

How much are repairs for alloy rash in your experience?

Parcel shelf is a right PITA to use, but it does cut down on noise. If you're buying, avoid a white one with standard wheels unless its much cheaper than other colour/wheel combos

Tesla Model Y Long Range, Midnight Silver, Black Interior, 20" Wheels September 2022. Overall cost to run over 24,032 miles is 16.51p per mile including solar and cheap overnight Octopus Go juice at 9p/kwh, 55 Supercharging sessions ave 43kw @ ave 47p/kwh, new tyres @ 20k £984, Insurance currently £689/15k Cornwall, Premium Connectivity @9.99/month and that is it. No faults to date. Fantastic car and will be upgrading to Juniper as soon as it comes out. Comparison cost of previous Mercedes GLE 350d on similar mileage even before the latest diesel rises was 48.86p per mile and a lot of warranty work. Second GLE 350de was so bad Mercedes bought it back from me. In summary 24k miles Mercedes £11,727 vs £3,967 Tesla
