I was born in San Francisco, so I Know steep grades. I’ve got 2.3 acres now a little north of the city with some 13-23 degree slope . Great to see someone doing tractor work on that. You and that Kubota did really well all things considered. I’ve got a 2025r tlb on order. I’ll be using filled tires and rear ballast. Thanks for all the experience you share on youtube. Spent my summers growing up on my aunt and Uncles farm in Ohio, so I totally feel your relationship with your brother-in-law. Nothing runs like a Deere!

The best part of this video was at the end introducing your brother in law as your mentor. The world so desperately needs more of these faith driven men to call mentors. My friend just bought the same tractor and we’re from north central pa he has rim guard in tires and for this snow storm we actually put tire chains on the front we flipped front tires around gave more room for chains worked great and moved snow like a champ ok keep up the good work

Here's a suggestion from someone who has watched a lot of off-roading and recovery videos. If that van has traction control, turn it off. Sometimes the traction control can be it's own worst enemy in these kinds of conditions because it uses the breaks to stop the spinning tire. Plus the computer sometimes kills the engine power during the times that it's most needed because of the economy features. Turning off the traction control also usually overrides that. It should go right up and over if you do that. So I recommend when you have conditions like these again, try turning of the traction control and see if that helps.

Tim, This is why we switch to 4 winter snow tires on our FWD Sienna during the snowy months in Minnesota. It makes a world of difference for us. Yes, they are noisier than the all season Toyo's on dry pavement, but it it gets us down the gravel roads with ease.

My son-in law owns some hunting property just north of Romney. That is beautiful country. Tim, I enjoyed hearing more about your family. You know you just couldn't wait to get that new tractor off the trailer and put her to work, even without ballast!

Wow! - Thanks for sharing some family time - I remember some of the harsh winters growing up in the mountains - we didn’t think much of it - that’s just the way things are when you are growing up - My car got stuck in its own track - I parked it on snow, the snow melted and formed a little ice depression under the drive wheel, and even though I have good tread on the tires, it could not get out of the little ice depression - I jammed a piece of plywood under the tire and was able to get moving - not so bad, just a little inconvenient - cheers

And how so kind of you to introduce us to your brother-in-law and to tell us in front of him how much he means to you. It's still taking some getting used to to see you on an orange tractor though. Not impossible, however. I look forward to learning more about the Kubota.

I have an excellent solution for this situation. I had a similar situation in Indiana this week. Gravel sloped driveway with 1/2 inch sheet of ice underneath 5 inches of snow. I have a Kioti CK4010SE, loaded R4 tires, bucket, WOODS box blade with scarifiers down. Drive downhill, lower the box blade and the scarifiers will chisel and break up the solid ice underneath. When finished put bucket in float and tilt bucket just forward of level to plow snow. Tickle bucket level while pushing just enough to keep it from plowing into gravel. Worked great. No spinning even with R4's. Be sure to go downhill and forward.

Hi Tim! I had to move 8 inches off my drive last week.... IN Byhalia, MS! I left my 60 inch LandPride mower on the back of my 1025r and cleared my drive pretty easily. Also used it to help a neighbor out of a ditch. You are correct about the rear ballast. I picked that up from watching some of your prior videos. That's why I left the mower on and up. Thanks again for your good content!

I have loved livin' in hill country most of my life, but always with fairly level driveways for the cars. Subaru owner since '82 so I don't know the van's weight distribution, but despite the awd, whenever I get in trouble I turn around and can generally back up the hills (or at least see where I'm gonna land at the end of my sled ride back down). Thanks for sharin' your experiences and your family; we are most fortunate when we can look back with fondness, preferably from an already parked car!

You did a good job, it's hard working with heavy, wet snow. I had a hard time at my place in Michigan this last time, I was totally unprepared for the storm. I am going to buy a 84" snow blade for my L4060 so it doesn't happen again. Usually my small ATV with a plow is fine as long a I keep up with it. Nice seeing you with more of your family, much to be grateful for.

When it comes to snow/ice nothing beats chains. All the ballast you want and all four tires will still slip/spin.

Scene the view from the camera of their house reminds me of what my wife and I have been going through the last week here in Western Arkansas at our family property. 7 inches of snow and our old tractor didn't even have a bucket! We just used the UTV and ATV to push down the snow so we could get the cars moved around. Like you said you have to use the tools that you have when the snow comes down. I think it was a good video just to show folks the need for ballast as well as edge tamers. Lol lol great video

Four wheel drive van with four season tires in snow will get you some places, just not the places you want to be. Nice place. When I bought my tractor the dealer recommended having the tires filled,, so I had them do it when I bought the machine. I do not regret that choice, it means I never used the machine without rear ballast.

Actually Tim, I probably wouldn't have done it the way that you did but you did a really nice job. You were smooth and steady. You were there, I wasn't. Add to that, it was your first time operating your new tractor. I would say that just wasn't too bad. Not bad at all.

I made my own version of edge tamers in my shop that bolt on to the bucket. I have been using my bucket to clear my driveway. I would definitely recommend people use something like edge tamers. Saves the gravel.

your brother in law is a neat guy and a next door neighbor im 50 miles from the WV border , and it gave you guys out there in the flat lands a look at what we over here in the hill country what we have to deal with when it comes to plowing and other things when we look for a tractor ............His place is so neat looking I would move in a minute

That was a perfect storm: New Tractor without any form of ballast Heavy, wet, sticky snow Long, steep grade No running room at the bottom of the hill. I don’t think stepping on the rear differential lock would have made any difference. That machine will be totally different with loaded tires and ballast. I have a 2011 Kioti DK 50 HST that has loaded R4 tires and I added (4) 80 lb weights on each rear tire (one inside the rim and three outside to stay within the tire profile) and the machine is great without an implement but super with the 6 foot rototiller or 6 foot snowblower. Glad you introduced your Brother-in-Law!

You're used to Johnny with rim guard, weights and a snow blade. It's hard to get out of your favorite easy chair and sit in another comfortably.

Rimguard is great product if you are fortunate to have a dealer within a reasonable distance to get the tires filled. I had a relatively close JD dealer fill the front and rear tires on my 52hp Massey Ferguson years ago. When I bought my JD 2032R last year, that same dealer no longer sold Rimguard and went back to water and methanol ballast. I have filled tires myself using the windshield washer fluid method with good results.

Modern snow tires are truly impressive in snow. Plowed or not, a good set of 4 snow tires would have allowed that 4wd van to easily climb the slope. I know a lot of people argue that snow tires are too expensive but if you think about it a bit you'll realize they are well worth it. Let's say you'll drive your vehicle 100,000 miles. With just summer tires, especially if they are grippy, softer compound tires, you'll probably go through 2 sets in that time (even though modern tires are typically rated for 50,000 miles or more). If instead of buying two sets of summer tires (the 1st set with the car), you buy a set of winter tires, you'll find not only will you still go through the same total of two sets of tires, the winter tires are often slightly less expensive than summer tires. So financially running winter tires in the winter really costs about the same as running only summers year round. The biggest justification for winter tires though is safety. If you can out brake the car in front of you, you can avoid getting into an at fault accident much easier. Also you are far less likely to slide off the road in a corner. On top of all that, you can climb hills to your home instead of potentially having to stay in your car overnight. Personally the very first thing I do when I buy a new (to me) vehicle is buy new snow tires and new rims. I also often use this as an excuse to buy a set of nice looking aftermarket rims and will use the stock alloys for winter use.

Great example of needing rear ballast. Love the kubota, can't wait for more videos on it. I'm a kubota fan myself. I grew up using a kubota b7800 (30hp). Great tractor!

I have a brand new LX3310 and absolutely love it so far I've pulled 13 foot logs out of the woods with it.

I would have loved to see the Ford 2000. That is one of the tractors that I grew up with on our farm. We had chains on the rear tires when we plowed snow here in Pennsylvania. Of course it was only two wheel drive but I learned to steer the tractor with the right or left brake when you would loose traction on ice with the front wheels. I have an old garden tractor. I put 120lbs of windshield washer fluid in each rear wheel. 2wd. Makes a huge difference even in comfort while driving. I can push snow now too

I have a b2650 smaller older version of what you bought. We had a really wet heavy snow a couple weeks ago and even with the rear box blade there wasn’t enough traction. I picked up some chains for the rear and thinking of some for my front wheels. Keep up the great work

I have a Kubota B2920 with the rear tires loaded and a ballast box with about 400 lbs and that thing is a tank! I can push show with my 6' plow right across the lawn. It works so well.

I will say this... You get very used to a certain machine and when it comes time to operate another make or model, it can be very different. Brand new, new to you, no weight... you did a fine job. I went from a 3000 series cub cadet to a BX2380. I watched your channel and many Kubota friendly channels before making my decision. It is just what I preferred for my needs at this moment in time. I appreciate your videos and respect JD as a company and brand, just not my final choice at the end of the day. I find my time on my tractor to be some of the most relaxing and peaceful, "mindful" moments. No matter the brand, I hope everyone finds that. Keep up the good work!

Rear blades are fantastic, I put one on the back of my Kubota BX2380 and it can't be beat!

I've found that filled rear tires and ~750lbs of rear ballast does about anything that I need to do. The LX Kabotas are a bit lighter than the 2038R that your used to. Some may consider this a negative, but I find that it makes it more useful. I can drop the loader and ballast box to mow the yard at a reduced weight and add them back when I need the weight to do loader, grapple or plowing work.

We are steeper and have about 14 inches still on the ground here in Preston County, WV. Will find a lot of tractors with chains this time of year. First the snow then the clay mud.

Beet Juice is good for Two things... heart health and tractor ballast. Great video and thanks for sharing the history too!

29CFR .1926 and or 29 CFR 1910 one is general industry the other is construction, (code of federal regulations) the information may be-in one section or the other or in both and more strict on one.think it's under powered industrial trucks or forklifts. It covers a lot of great information that you can read for free if you are new to lifting equipment, stability triangle, how to navigate a slope with and with out a load. 4H or FFA used to offer a tractor safety course, I took one 20 plus years ago( and don't regret that I did, I was in the stage of life were I just didn't know what I didn't know yet compensated with just push on and get it done mentally). Also for minimal investment into your safety, talk with your local rental yard and have them train you to the OSHA 29CFR-1910.178(I) . Tim you have a wealth of knowledge and experience. I would challenge you to follow up on this forklift training, I believe its great training for all levels of knowledge, by definition it was designed and funded for one common type of equipment, that is a work horse in industry but too many took for granted the limitations a forklift has. I believe this training parallels everything you've been touching on with your channel with farm tractors, aka sub compact compact or utility style tractors. I personally grew up in the farming industry and then went active duty as an field artillery cannoneer, to work construction, grading , demolition &decommissioning. I've had many opportunities to be injured or killed. I've also had some great people in my life that have educated me in formal and informal training. Stay safe on the equipment pride is repaired and recovers faster than a minor injury and most certainly faster than a grave injury.

From garden tractors to the biggest equipment you got, tire ballast is the ticket for sure. I've got it in all of my equipment, even my lawnmower, and it's beyond night and day difference in having it or not.

Wow Tim that must have been sketchy with that van being parked there and family inside 😂. My new drive way after the last Maryland ice storm took 5 hours to plow. That slope is about the same as half of my driveway and in some places it's steeper. For ballast leave backhoe on plus it comes in handy to get unstuck. Found going up in reverse on some of the worse icy spots with differential locked gets best traction with 1025.

That's about s steep as my driveway here in Vermont but mine is paved and slick as ice in Winter. Chains and ballast make a world of difference.

Tires! This all comes back to the tires on the Sienna... Tim did a great job with the situation at hand. Do they not normally have snow? They seem very unprepared for the conditions.
