Hi Everyone. Facemasks took on a whole new level of importance when I started spraying in the workshop, and in this video I discuss the ones I use, and the one I recommend going forwards. Enjoy!
Note that the Trend Air Stealth mask comes with P3 dust filters as standard, and whilst these give a high level of protection for woodworking they are not intended for use when spraying. The Trend ‘Organic filter set’ offers a higher APF20 level of filtration which I understand is suitable for use in water-based mists e.g. spraying water-based paints. If you are working in gases and vapours e.g. spraying solvent-based paints, you will need a higher level of RPE protection e.g. ABE1P3 that the 3M 4277 mask offers.
If you have any doubt about the suitability of of RPE for the task at hand, please visit www.hse.gov.uk for more information.

Another excellent video, I too did a bit of spraying and alot of sanding without a mask sometimes, like you said I have the bigger 3m mask but way to big and bulky and hence didn't wear it when I should have, now I have a disease known as COPD and it's know that I have ordered my trend mask. Should have done it years ago. Cheers for the info, always good to get a little reassurance from someone else who has made the purchase and is totally satisfied with it.

I have some severe respiratory problems which are impacted on with some very unusual nerve damage. The combination of these makes me very aware of my sell by date and I’m not making plans for my retirement. I always wear a face mask, but I can only wear them for short periods or the masks themselves can cause dysfunctional breathing which is a problem of mine due to the pain breathing causes. The Trend mask looks very good and I think I’ll be investing in one. Thank you very much Peter, too few people discuss or review masks.

Hi Peter, useful video for anyone working with wood and paints etc. I do face fit testing as part of my job and the 3M stuff is good, as is the JSP push to test model. We have a lot of clients that standardized on the Sundstrom platform of SR100 silicone half mask. It's a very good mask that has a range of sizes s/m, m/l, l/XL, and is made from silicone, just like baking stuff, so doesn't rot over time in your toolbox and unlike rubber won't potentially cause a latex allergy. It can load 2 filters at once and a pre-filter to block larger particles and extend the filter life. Has 2 separate replaceable exhalation valves. A hard storage box, anti-septic wipes, pre-filter and other spares and accessories are available. Arco carry them at £29.99 + VAT currently. For folding facepiece type masks, I use 3M 9332+ Aura FFP3 when other masks don't fit people properly. The only way to know that your mask is working is to have either a qualitative rpe face fit test or a more accurate expensive quantative face fit test.
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks David - that’s really good info. What you’re really telling me is that my ‘does it fog my specs or not’ test isn’t good enough, right?? 😂👍😷
@davidmarsden9800
@davidmarsden9800 6 жыл бұрын
Peter Millard Not really, fogged goggles means it's leaking badly, not fogged is not a guarantee. On the Sundstrom SR100 hand over filter opening gives you a check as when you breathe in it should suck into your face if not and you can feel or hear the leak don't use. Your nose is usually the point of leaks and a range of sizes can help you with a comfortable and affective fit. The block inlet technique works on most masks, can be problematic for folding facepiece type masks and moulded paper valved types due to the nrd shape.

Peter, I got into the habit of washing off the waterproof parts of the mask several times a day especially before I bagged it. And when I remembered I would wash out the bag too. A good, light, comfortable and flexible mask is essential if you expect to wear it for long periods of time. I will pay whatever I need to get those qualities in a mask. Usually it's a 3M, just not your model 3M.

Thanks for the video, I've used the 3M masks for a while and two things came to mind: 1) You can get overspray covers to help them last longer in spray painting environments (on Amazon as 3M™ Overspray Guard, 400) 2) Had the same problem with the elastic like you showed at the end of the video. Eventually figured out you had to pass it through that friction fitting/clamp, and then through the eye which is further along the elastic. That keeps it in place so the friction clamp can do it's job.

Hi Peter. A great video as always and it's always interesting to hear perspectives on PPE topics as we all have different sized heads, faces, hands ears etc. and getting a good fit might mean a completely different product rather than a change in size. Anyway my M/L Trend mask has got lost in the house move but I really liked it. It beats everything else I've tried (so far) and it needs to be good as I have an allergy to wood dust (oh the irony) so the Trend gets a double thumbs-up from me. 👍👍stuck with an RZ mask for now.

MDF dust and paint spray particulates in that little workshop - too bloody right you need protection. Glad to see you have suitable protection and a very worthwhile piece of equipment to boot! Thanks for the heads up. whitedoggarage that's right, hierarchy of control, elimination 1st, substitution, engineering controls, and then absolutely last resort PPE. I use the JSP Force 8 mask from Screwfix. I find it very comfortable and effective. And for some reason I don't get that funny metallic taste that I would get with disposable filter masks and the 3M respirator if I wore them for long periods. I don't know if there are any about but, it would be good if a manufacturer could incorporate a directional exhale valve so that you can still blow dust out of the way. Used to have a respirator years ago that had the valve just at the right place and angle that allows me to do that. But it fell to bits and couldn't get the same again. Keep up the good work.

That just leaves the question of whether the Trend filter cartridges are more or less expensive than the 3M ones. In the end I tend to find myself using a particle and organic solvent combination filter, because it's just more convenient than switching filters every time I want to apply wax to something. My preferred wax is turpentine based. As for the expiration date, especially with organics filters, abide by them. By the time you can smell that the filter is no good anymore it's already way too late. Filters are cheap, lungs are not.
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 6 жыл бұрын
As I say, the 3M one I’ve mostly used is disposable, so no replacement filters at all. The Trend ones are about £10/pair here, I think. 👍
@jakefallon2335

Filters are cheap to make, not to buy though. A pair is currently £9.37 on Trends website (plus shipping of £3.36) or a shade under £12 on Amazon (delivered).

@fermitupoupon1754 6 жыл бұрын
Talk about a rip off. Conrad sells the 3M filters for €52, delivered per 10 pairs. And the masks are €20 a piece or €45 for a box of 4, including a pair of filters for each mask.

@jakefallon2335 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Peter. The Trend looks goo,d in both function and initial price, but it's another case of the "lets rip you off once you've bought one" philosophy with a singe set of replacement filters that probably cost pennies to manufacturer selling for over £9 on Trends website and almost £12 on Amazon (inc delivery). It makes 5 dust bags for my Festool CT26 seem cheap at less that £27 and I never thought I would say that!
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 6 жыл бұрын
Cheers Steve. To be fair, that’s around the same price as other mask makers charge for their replacement filters, and cheaper than buying a whole new mask. But yes, it’s the razor blade / computer printer/ink business model all over. And Festool vac bags seeming cheap?? I think the heat’s getting to you, time for a refreshing beverage 😆👍👍

My experience with dust: I used to work in a chipboard plant (21 years) and used lots of different face masks form disposable to full face and powered, not really relevant but also trained with breathing apparatus as used by fire departments. Without a doubt full face is the best, but the tight seal around the face can be uncomfortable over a long period, next are powered units. I used the 3m airstream and they are really good. Having slowly increased my woodworking tools I found a real problem with dust, mainly sore eyes. So i bought googles the best seal I could find, these were no help. Next a cheap extractor which works well as a chip collector, but alas did not help the eyes. So bought a trend airstream and its great no sore eyes today. Heavier than the 3m but a lot cheaper, I am also thinking of upgrading my dust extracto to 1200 cfm and filter to a pleated one.

I use a Axminster Tools Evolution. Apf 10 for virtually all work (metal, wood, paint etc). Protects lungs, eyes, face etc and copes with beards and all sizes of face. Along with dust extractor snd Jet air filter box, it seems to prevent inhalation and irritation to eyes etc by very fine airborne dust (which is hardly visible to the human eye.

Hi Peter I to use the 3M face mask which I like because of the low profile. The larger masks get in my line of vision . That trend look's very interesting thanks for sharing. Some time back I mentioned to you about a product called metal Lux wood filler it's a two part system with colours suitable for hardwood I wonder if you'd had any luck in finding and using it it can be obtained from a place called brewers they are paint suppliers once again thanks for sharing best regards Shaun 😀 p. S. As a rule of thumb if you can taste the product you are spraying it is time to replace your mask or filters.

Im using a 3M 7500 I bought in the US yrs ago (recommended by the Woodwhisperer). There it came with P100 particle filters. Here in Europe I have replaced them with P3 filters for particles and ABEK1 for paint, etc. As I understand P100 in the US = P3 in Europe. Works great (even w my beard). A little flimsy straps, but absolutely no glass fogging.
@10MinuteWorkshop

You're right. However, I use the ABE with all kinds of paints and mdf/other sheet with glue. I have asthma and was severely sick for 3-4 yrs after I exposed myself to lots of mdf dust. The mask needs to create a seal with your skin to work. Beards and stubble prevent this. You cannot be face fit tested with beards and/or stubble. This was a major issue for testers discussed at the British Safety Council's Northern exhibition in Manchester last year. Everybody wants to be trendy, but your mask will give no protection. You really need a powered hood instead approximately £400-£5000.

David you're correct, it also amazes me the number of people you will see spraying with a mask that is not rated to the product that they are spraying. It's not the particulate that is always the issue but the chemical composition as well, and this is where the weekend worrier often gets it wrong. A Peter mentioned, the need of additional filter materials depending on what is being sprayed if often missed.

I'd not seen that Trend mask, thanks for the overview. I've started using a JSP Force8 mask recently and like it, the filters are large but point backwards giving a fairly flush front and the press-to-check function is great for checking the fit! I wonder whether the filters have different capacities - will those smaller Trend ones require changing more frequently?

Thanks! Yeah, very good point about the longevity of the larger filters, though in all honesty I'm far more likely to be throwing them away after 28 days than I am because they're clogged. But something to keep an eye on, certainly 👍

I used to use the A1 version of the 3M mask and I really found it comfortable to use. Being a home gamer I of course completely ignored the life expectancy on it. After a (very very) long time I noticed I was feeling out of breath at the end of even short uses. The mask was filthy and clogged, a new mask fixed that right up. I also tried the paint/dust filter cover things at but I found them to make no difference whatsoever and were a complete waste of time. Recently however I swapped to the JSP Force 8 mask with replaceable filters, currently P3. Initially I just had the medium one screwfix sell but found it too small so got the large version from Axeminster. Most comfortable mask I own now but it's certainly more than a little bulky so I may well look into the trend one and keep the JSP for A/B filters. As a side note as a fellow glasses wearer I'd like to know what you do about eye protection. I've tried a number of goggles but so far they are either horrible and uncomfortable or don't fit over the glasses properly despite what the manufacturer says. This is an even bigger issue if I am also wearing my respirator.

It really is silly, there seems to be a huge push for people to wear proper PPE but a huge %age of us just aren't catered for. I am just considering a full face mask but then it becomes a bulk issue like with the face masks. Maybe it's time to moan at some of the manufacturers!

Not quite the same field but in the car spraying trade we refer to those 3M masks as the "fly masks" due to their appearance . They have a widespread use in my trade for the reasons you state, comfortable, easily adjusted for a great fit and relatively cheap (compared to a new set of lungs 🤣). Your niggle about the elastic straps might be cured by sliding the locking tabs into place (they weren't in that shot). Personally I use an air fed mask due to the prolonged exposure to the nasty chemicals in automotive paint, but that's way outside the scope of this video. A dedicated compressor sending fresh air through multiple layers of filtration to an air hose attached to your mask would be OTT and not very convenient for woodworking! Makes you look like an astronaut though 😂

@10MinuteWorkshop 6 жыл бұрын
Cheers Andy! Yes, if I was spraying anything other than water-based paints, I’d definitely be looking at something like an air-fed system, especially if it was anything more than the odd half-hour mow and then. But the astronaut thing sounds pretty cool though 😂👍👍😎

I saw a video were someone cobble together the mouthpiece from a snorkel and parts from a dust mask to make a custom... "respiratory filter" (technically not a mask). Seemed like a good idea paired with a nose clip. Downside being the condensation is so bad the thing needs a spit resovoir (gross I know) which creates a new set of problems.

@10MinuteWorkshop

Hiya. Yes, it’s the valves doing their thing - making sure you only breathe in through the filters at the sides, and out through the exhaust valve at the base. I don’t get the full-on Darth Vadar thing, but it is noticeable 👍👍

The maintenance free type masks are essentially disposable and are there for companies to manage their PPE without major COSHH records, maintenance, repair and cleaning, filter replacement issues. If you have 20, 50 or 100+ wearers that's a major task. With the 28 day buy, use at 28 days (or sooner depending on usage) throw away. Big cost and compliance saver. But follow the instructions though. Makes sense for a lot of people and companies when you do the maths and if your h&s management system can cope. That one you have in the video belongs in the bin. Good subject for video from the user's point of view nicely done. All information about RPE at www.hse.gov.uk along with all relevant information on legislation. Also check out the HSL (Health and Safety Laboratory) website, I did the face fit testing training and certification at Buxton.

Just to clarify David when you say ‘the one you have in the video belongs in the bin...’ you’re talking about the 3M one right? And the bin is where it is, along with all the other old bits masks I dredged up for the thumbnail. And thank you - excellent point about disposable masks being a way of achieving regulatory compliance without the record-keeping and paperwork 👍👍

Yes Peter, the green one that was originally blue. Most mask will give good protection if you have the correct fit. The problem I find is people that fall foul of the statistical bell curve and just fall outside the quartiles the manufacturer has designed around. Face too thin/fat, dental issues, etc. Straps are a pain, many a good mask won't fit properly because you can't adjust the straps enough or more frequently - at all. Tying knots in the straps causes other problems. Sadly it isn't a case of just buy a mask and wear it. It's a complicated affair sometimes. A few years ago, I was involved with a hardwood nasal cancer case of a woodworker who started in the 1960's and had the best masks available all throughout, but worked at home in shed with mahogany, oak etc, but only oak at work. Where did he get it? I met leading Professor in country who said most masks from back then were ineffective. The law asks has he got the industrial disease? Does he work in the industry? If both answers yes then firm liable. MDF is suspected to turnout to be the new asbestos, so good fitted mask, H class extractor good idea.

Cheers Graham. Right now they just do a P3 dust filter and an organic filter, though the organics are hard to come by - I’m still waiting for some. I think it’s a pretty new mask, so I’m sure the situation will improve 👍👍

I have a 3M half mask respirator. This may sound weird, but after my second time wearing it I noticed I was getting some pimples/acne around where the face seal meets my face. It happened on 2 different occasions. Now I use alcohol wipes to clean the rubber seal after or before I use it the next time. I wonder if this happens to anyone else.

Hi John. I haven’t no; I had a quick look at the specs and being American they don’t seem to state the effective filtration in our terms eg P2, P3 etc... It’s possible I just need to dig a little deeper, of course, and I’d be very interested in trying them out in terms of fit, convenience etc... So one for a future video, maybe 🤔👍

I believe you’re comparing apples and pears. P filters protect against dust particles. A,B,E and K protect against different vapours/gasses. Your new mask is only P3 while the 3M mask is ABE1P3. Can you make an update and clarify the difference between dust and vapours? People might believe a P3 mask will protect against paint thinners and such while it doesn’t.
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. As I say in the video, this mask comes with P3 filters as standard, but higher-spec organic filters are available if you need that level of protection. My understanding is that the organic filters are APF20 which (in addition with P3) makes them suitable for working in ‘fine water-based mists’ which is what I get with the water-based paints I use, not gases or vapours that the ABE filtration spec refers to. But I’ll check with Trend and do a follow-up, certainly. 👍

Dear Peter, I am sure for the professional or those doing cutting and spraying on a daily basis your video was of value. But to be honest as a hobbyist who does no spraying at all and does the cutting out in the open air it was of no interest. Nicely presented though.

Thanks Charles. Like the BBC, I try to inform, educate and entertain in my videos. All wood dust is hazardous; when I started out woodworking I also did all my cutting out in the open air. I wasn’t asthmatic then - I am now. I’m sure you can join the dots as well as I can. You only have one set of lungs - my advice is to wear a mask. 👍😷
