Using & Reviewing Powercast Burn castable resin with my Elegoo Mars - detailed home castings! VOGMAN

Powercast Burn castable resin + my Elegoo Mars printer = probably the most detailed home casting I've ever done. I was thrilled to be able to review Powercast Burn. Let's face it, castable resin isn't cheap. But does it work? Does it print? Does it produce good quality castings? And what settings are needed for the Elegoo Mars? All of this is covered here, along with commonly quoted complaints about castable resin.

Hi VOG. I've been waiting for this success from you. I'm venturing in to the world of casting and I've watched your vids with great interest. It's got to be said that not every attempt you've done came out great (not a criticism). I've been waiting for that day to come where you can finally say "it came out really well" and I agree it did. Now we need consistency for it to be successful. I have to say mostly everything I'm going to do I've learned from your vids so thanks for that. Great job 👌👌

I'm my own biggest critic Mark so I understand what you mean. Casting has been a fun self-taught journey for me and I believe I still have a long way to go. There are so many variables to nail perfectly to obtain high quality and consistency. I may never achieve it, but I'll keep trying : )

There you go, raising the bar again! Well met. I'm glad to see you doing reviews and getting sponsorship. You absolutely deserve it.
@vogman
@vogman 4 жыл бұрын
Well it's not sponsorship... I don't think I've reached the stage of being paid to make videos (if only) but these are DONATED products, given to me freely for an IMPARTIAL REVIEW. I always respect companies that do this as I'm not gentle. If I don't like something, if I think it's wrong, I say so. But this allows my viewers to buy with some confidence and that should lead to sales for these companies. I think it's a win win for all. For me, I get to play... and that's my ultimate reward : D
@andrewgillis3073
@andrewgillis3073 3 жыл бұрын
@@vogman Giving free sample with no strings attached is better than giving a sponsorship. With a sponsorship, there is always an implied threat that the sponsorship will be withdrawn if the review isn't positive. On the other hand, unsolicited reviews not only give an honest opinion, but often provide useful information.

Those are remarkable! I like the idea of a dual purpose support/sprue! These plates' eventual home will be a 1/8 scale U.S. Transportation Corps S-160 live steam locomotive that I'm building, modeled after the full sized Alaska Railroad #557 that our group is overhauling for operation. The round plate used the same drawing that that was printed at full scale (9 inches diameter) in PLA and cast to replace one that was stolen 50 years ago from the prototype locomotive. Many thanks to Geoff for his teachings. They prompted me use lost PLA to cast several other parts for the locomotive that I would have previously machined from a chunk of steel or would have cast using Petrobond sand using traditional wooden patterns. (Those who have made wooden patterns know that there is a major investment in time in making the patterns - especially for one or two offs. The time to draw, print, and cast using lost PLA or resin is considerably less. For some parts, one side is a mirror image of the other, so *two* patterns are required. With printed parts all it takes is to push the "mirror" button.) After seeing what Geoff was doing with resin printing I ran out and got an Elegoo Mars. I've printed several parts for casting, but I'm not happy with most of them. there is a steep learning curve to get them right. Geoff - I think you used Elegoo grey resin for your first few lost resin prints. Can you comment on how usable it is for casting and compare it to the Powercast Burn resin?

I had much the same revelation. I'd not long had a Creality FDM and was enjoy the wonders of Lost PLA casting, developing the technique and sharing this on KZfaq. Then I had the opportunity to review an Elegoo Mars. The difference in print quality blew my tiny mind. You might enjoy that video - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kJOhdpx82bWzqp8.html - I was as green as anything and not always talking good sense in that review, but I did compare FDM and resin side by side. So when the opportunity came to use castable resin... well... if you can print it, you can cast it 😁

for smoother castings, without the minor layer lines, consider curing your prints while they are slightly damp with resin. The surface tension of the resin will just fill the layer lines and give nice glossy surface finish. i use this method to finish prints with transparent resins, giving the models an optically clear coloured glass effect. i think this would compliment your casting process nicely. great video! keep up the good work!

Nice job again 👍 Although I am way behind you on the casting front, I have been resin printing for a while now and I have almost managed to make every mistake there is with these things 😊 Someone has already suggested roughing up your build plate, good advice. Consider printing flat objects like coins directly on the plate, it goes much faster and saves a out of resin plus you don’t get layer lines as you did when printing vertically. If they are double sided coins, print both halves and stick them together later. Hope this helps and thanks for all your hard work 👍

Glad to see priming worked! I dont cure mine when I prime. It seems to just stay on the plate during the print. As for positioning of the flask- im told the plaster is porous enough to let the gas out. Think about when you vac cast. It draws through it. Admittedly my solid flask is much smaller and i place it button down. My larger flasks are perforated and ive had no issues. The only time i ever had plaster crack is when i printed a hollowed model to save resin. I guess it didnt survive the vacuum boil and when I poured...some scary things happened. Also. If you are not vac casting, or, end up using one of those machines that is all enclosed..ive found an exhaust baffle off a motor cycle works well. I think i paid about 35$. Its a 3” very perforated stainless steel pipe that i just cut down and use as a flask.
@vogman
@vogman 4 жыл бұрын
Yes the priming worked great - well, 4 coats did : ) You may be right about the gases but I certainly saw vapour clouds rise when I rotated. It was probably just water vapour, but I don't know for sure. Personally I have to take every advantage I can get : ) I love the baffle idea. It's a real shame as I bought some perforated flasks just a few weeks ago.

Oh wow you see gasses? I never looked to see if Bluecast has the same result. No kidding. Im using Optima Prestige investment. It supports “fast burnout”. Ie throw the flask in at 600C, sit for 1 hour. Come up to 750C for 2 hours and cast. If you lurk on the facebook group BlueCast users...yeah, you are using a dif resin and they wont answer questions about other brands, but theres a ton of good knowledge there that might give you some pointers

@@vogman I have lots of experience with resin, but none with lost wax casting, so I was very excited to discover castable resins exist. Still need to acquire the metal casting equipment and learn a bunch there, but I'm greatly looking forward to your next video.

Nice one. Take a look at this video I did... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p96aaMiG0KeqhX0.html - it's about Lost PLA casting but the same techniques apply for Wax or even Resin. A lot of the equipment is very expensive so where possible I made my own cheaper but effective versions. There's links to all those things within this video and also in the description. If you need any help, just drop me a line : )

Wonderful job. Those castings really look awesome. 👍 If you test more resins, maybe you should print some kind of a test pattern too. Something with different letter sizes, wall sizes, spike heights etc. It could give some idea how well the resin works in casting (burn off, durability etc.)
@vogman

That's a very good suggestion. I have got a couple more coming hopefully. If they don't print the same they won't cast the same, so yes... I'll give that some thought. Thanks : )

Great video! Nice tip about flipping the flask after the initial wax melt. I worked for GRS and only ever put 'button down' during burn out, therefore this could explain some of the issues we were experiencing! By the way I have been chatting as another account 'Mart Harwood' not sure what is happening, but I can't see your reply to comments. Anyhow, keep up the fantastic videos 👍

In dental lab school they taught us to roughen the top of the flask to allow gas to escape. Been doing it for 14 years and never had to rotate the flask during burnout. For rough castings typically it is due to a improper burn out procedure or too loose of investment (too much water). That said, They look great!
@vogman
@vogman 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Karlan. I've had others tell me the investment is porous enough to allow the gases through and you may well be right. Roughing the surface would increase the surface area so that's a logical idea. For the moment (as I'm new to it) I'll stick with the rotate technique. In a few weeks I might do a few experiments and see if I can spot differences. But I suspect I'll be bowing to your superior knowledge in the end : )

These Elegoo Mars printers look awesome! I saw your review and Crafsman Steadycraftin's review. He did one with the Elegoo vs the Anycubic Photon S. This one looks very affordable and seems to do a good job. I should save up for one. I went to school for Engineering, Drafting, and Design. I was trained how to use Solidworks and worked with Startasys 3D printers. I have used the Creality CR-10S and liked it, when I modified stuff to make it better. This would be great though for creating characters and such. I have been playing around with Autodesk Mudbox because it allows me to sculpt more organic objects and save them as STL's. I really want to sculpt something in Mudbox, Print in resin, then silicone mold it, and then cast with resin. I need to make a video on that in the future. Great video though, this would be great for casting in metal! I will have to keep this resin in mind. Oh! and holding a grudge against Formlabs I see! LOL HA HA HA

Good video, maybe I'll try some out far in the future. As for your problem with printing it sounds like the prints would constantly fall off the build plate or fall off at the major cure time change between the bottom layers and the print layers(and thus you needed to prime it). I had very similer problems before on my D7 that required me to write g-code that made a gradient that slowly decreases the cure time until it is at the nominal cure time. That and scratching the crap out of my bed surface fixed almost all my layer adhesion problems.

@dickmorris6310 4 жыл бұрын
@@vogman I got a sample sized spool of TPU filament, which is somewhat flexible. I was going to print a copy of your basin type sprue base without the center taper on my filament printer. That way it could be reused like the commercial rubber bases. With a hole in it like the commercial bases it could be married to a PLA or wax sprue. My fiber printer is pretty low end and wasn't happy trying to print the TPU filament. It just plugged the nozzle, but this should be worth pursuing if one had the correct printer for one of the more flexible filaments.

that's the highest detail metal casting i've seen on youtube! do you think there's a limit to the level of detail that can be achieved by casting though? maybe the shrinkage of the metal while it's cooling or its viscosity while molten would prevent you from getting micrometre wide grooves?

Hi VOG, those results look great! Thank you for sharing. Some ANICUBIC Photon users sand their build plate carefully to get better adhesion (and to make it more even). Regarding castable resins I could recommend to try HarzLabs (Russian company, maybe you have a distributor in th UK other wise edv-3d-druck(dot)de is a German distributor) or Druckwege(dot)de resins (German company). They are a little cheaper if I recall correctly. Both should ship to the UK. Good luck.

Hi Geoff, that was pretty damn good. Thank you for taking us through the process. Question / Suggestion - Could you form your prints so that your sprue goes all the way from top to bottom of the casting plaster to allow better drainage / burnout. Then just plug the bottom before you cast with metal?
@vogman
@vogman 4 жыл бұрын
There's great scope to including sprue design in with the pattern design with catable resin. You'll see a small example of that next week in a ring video (there's a teaser image on my Community page). The drawback is, of course, that the resin is expensive and that makes you want to use it sparingly. But if you penny pinch too much you risk a spoiled casting : )

Adding that extra wax as a sprue seemed like a pit of a pain when it came to removing it, stand it up to let the gases out then upside down to let the material run out. What are your thoughts on that? The resins expensive so printing large sprues would be a waste for sure.

I got worried when you said castable resin was £100 ... then i realised it was for burning off that would have scuppered me ☺. And priming the build plate with resin was a brilliant idea gives you a larger scrapping area for the removal tool as well as adherence 👍. Results perfect
@vogman

I like silicone moulds but I think you lose a little definition. After all you're casting a copy of a copy. But if I was doing several of the same thing, that's what I'd do. A nice crisp resin print made into a silicone mould. For one-off castings, which is mostly what I do, it makes sense to use castable resin. After all silicone isn't cheap either : )
