What about designing and testing other types of products that are not only apps, websites or other screen-based software. For example, how to properly test warning systems in cars or planes where time and cognitive load are critical as well as the context of use?

In-context testing or simulated in-context testing is important here. But more importantly I'd probably look to summative testing if I was interested in a research question like "time to notice an alarm".

Hello David, I am following with great interest your UX Tea Breaks. I am currently studying Multimedia Design at Business Academy Aarhus, Denmark, and we are learning a lot about UX Design. I want to know your advice about usability testing with children. Can you share what challenges we should consider and some tips for performing good testing. Thank you. :)

I've only run one usability test with children. It was a nightmare and involved completing very long forms. It's at least twice as difficult because each child needs to be accompanied by a parent or carer, so you need to effectively recruit two people for each slot. The UXPA had a special edition of their magazine on this. It's free to access: uxpamagazine.org/issue/10-1/

Do you have any suggestions for remote unmoderated testing if your company doesn't have access to software that costs to use?
@DavidTravis

I don't know of any self-hosted, remote unmoderated tools. To be honest, I don't think remote unmoderated testing is a particularly strong research method -- it's much better to moderate formative tests (either in person or remotely).

during research, when people don't talk or they ignore us, ex. i want to make spiritual(video, content, blogs, quotes etc. ) kind of app, in this context, which kind of question should be ask to real user in real market. like why are you using this product? i think people will confuse bit, so we should ask them question or we should observe them or let them do task... please help to understand, which kind of question should be ask in starting career or starting of any problem.......Thanks :)

The best approach here is to observe people doing the meaningful activity in the real world. Hang out with people to understand their needs and pain points in the space where your app will be positioned. Do go in with pre-prepared questions but be open to discovering what you don't know you don't know.
