I answer the question, "What would you call someone who is made a user representative in a project, e.g. user lead/advocate/champion?"

Agree! I had a similar experience. My team used to be impressed by comments from the customer support manager. They even used his comments to argument design decisions. In the end, I introduced usability testing to my team. We found that his comments were only based on the complaints of a very specific type of user. And our site's audience covered 4 types!!

Hi Mr Travis, I really enjoy your videos! Thanks for putting them out! A question for you, I wonder how do you feel about UX unicorns? The expectation you need to know it all is quite concerning when you are looking to get into the field. Coming from a research background would you argue it is better to start as a generalist unicorn to get one's foot in the door and gain UX experience or insist on aiming for a user research role regardless? Many thanks!

I just begun my career in UX with no prior experience at a design agency and from day one i faced this problem i was doing wireframes and competitive analysis over the course of 6months nothing changed. I knew even if I stayed i will have nothing on my portfolio that will impress anyone, so I left. I still don't have a job but now I know what kind of a question I will ask before I accept any job offer, so that I don't suffer the same fate.

I just rolled off a project very similar to this but the difference was that the champion was actually a user of the system so it really worked out, I was designing it for him to use basically.

I wonder how typical he is of the user group as a whole?

Great answer! How would you answer to someone that tell you “I know my users”? Thanks

I'd say, "That's fabulous! Talk me through the way they do [x]". I'd then keep asking them questions until they realised they didn't know their users or until I convinced myself they did.

An obstacle... Funny 😀 Whenever I try to explain usability testing to people they respond with "oh like UAT" and when I talk about generative research, they relate it to Business Analyst role. Do you think QAs who do UAT and BAs can switch to UX research?

Yes I do. I don't think there's anything special in UX research that can't be taught. I did a tea break video on user research and business analysis here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o8xdmNRj3qzRias.html

One more thing how should one who is on a junior level advocate and provide proof to such people why wireframe is not the only thing in UX and how user research and feedback is the most important thing at every stage. How do you handle typical we have expert knowledge on this so don't need user research or feedback.

That's a big ask from a junior level role. You really need to engage a senior manager in the importance of user research. Identify someone who appears to be motivated to deliver the right product to users and show them how user research can help them in their role.

Reminds me of the increasing opinion from Product Owners who claim that, by definition, their job is represent the voice of the user.
