Welcome to another video.
This time I was contacted by the owner of an Audi S8 from the USA. After a long long long conversation we ended up buying a second hand engine just for £1500! After I start taking it apart it proves to me again that a second hand engine can't just go straight in .
Thank you for watching If you want to get in touch visit our website

From Mat Armstrong/Tavarish video series of his RS6 on the US, be mindful that LHD engines have some differences with the RHD ones. Mostly brackets tho, but might not be a straight swap. Probably you have this already in mind anyway! Keep up the great content.

It`s always a pleasure to watch your videos. I admire your work ethic and also the fact that when a mistake is made, i.e the oil spillage, you don`t edit it out. That to me shows even good mechanics can make slipups once in a while. Keep the content coming, can`t wait for the next one on this build.

BTW I always get my injectors cleaned and flow matched before re-installing them. You can also buy used injectors and then have all 10 injectors tested, cleaned and flow matched by a shop who does that professionally.

You’re brave to take this one on. Let’s hope there are serious differences between the two engines. It’s lovely to see an unstressed naturally aspirated engine. All that turbo related junk not getting in the way or over pressuring the engine. Good luck.

You would need (1)1.5-2 m3/min compressed air on 8-10 bars for the metal surfaces for a smaller blaster (4-5 maybe 6 millimeters nozzle). That means a (5)-7.5-11kw screw compressor at least. 30 kgs/h sounds okay for delicate cleaning. I would rather use a wider nozzle and estimate maybe 70-100 kgs for cleaning the outside depending on your standards of cleanness. I would spend maybe 150-200-250 kg on this engine depending on your skills and standards you want to achieve. There are good blasters made in EU from maybe like 7-8k+ eurs with 3 years of warranty. The excessive fog indicates rather low pressure/airflow comparing to the used dry ice or excessive moisture in the air.

27:00 Looks to me like the regular service intervals were not adhered to with this engine. It's rather dirty inside with lots of varnish everywhere. Change your oil regularly. It's cheap insurance. 30:50 - Yep, you agree.

My experience is similar. Paid $10,000 cdn for a second hand engine. Did some basic refreshments to it. Installed it.. Drove it for a day. I wasn't gentle. After that, I was crusing down the hwy in 6th gear when the bearing spun. Took it apart, rod bearing #1 spun. The rest of the rod bearings were in rough shape. Oddly enough all main bearings were ok. Now I'm rebuilding it with additional expense. Also, if you have a spare 4.2 BNS rod lying around you'd sell please let me know! It's my last piece to the giant puzzle.

Thank you so much for this video! 👏🏼 About the carbon in the piston rings - do you think it is because of the intake air, or the lack of oil changes? I have a fully working S8 for now, just thinking of preventive measures to keep it healthy, such as engine oil flush (BG products).

I always thought that Hitachi is the OEM manufacturer for these Audi fuel injectors. I also damaged one of the fuel injectors of my V8 Audi S5, so I just purchased Hitachi OEM injector. I never had an issue. If you have an air compressor, then you should look into getting a media blaster that you can use walnut and sand abrasive media into it. Since you duality carbon clean only when the engine is pulled out, it’ll be a lot easier to send blast intake valves. However your sandblasting wand should be long enough to get deep into intake port.

yeah, that's alot of pistons and displacement! but the timing chains are measured in looks to be 10s of meters, no thanks. apparently the modern V6s have lost all of this setup and have a mid point gear that drives the cams to chains! so maybe only 3 now. a person is brave to have one of these v10s, split crankshaft! so this is very much like that generation V6 thought with 4 cylinders added... wow

Again - Oil Changes, or in this case of the second-hand engine, missed services/lack of. Whether naturally aspirated or forced induction, my OCI limit is 5k miles. And when I do the oil & filter changes, its a higher-quality VW504 (B9.5 RS5) or VW508 (B9 SQ5) oil and the OEM-branded filter. I've had good success with UOAs using Ravenol, purchased through Blauparts here in the US.
