Good video, shows your experience another way to fix the problem. I normally change the diverter valve but if you can fix it then why not. Slight rust doesn't matter as long as there aren't any holes that can affect the room seal.

I think everyone is different we all have to make choices based on what we see on site. Personally I'd change the whole DV assembly. Had enough call backs through trying to repair so thats what i always do now. But as i say we're all different and have to make our own choices, as there are so many factors at play. Also from a customer relations point of view and with experience I always get the customer to look at the state of the boiler, always make them aware that once one thing goes its possible others will follow.

That boiler has been fine with the second cartridge in it. I have just fitted one of these in my mum boiler. Full, in the family test. :-). I work on a lot of contracts and how I fix boilers varies depending on how the pay works. Unfortunately, I cant always replace the whole part. :-)

I worked on this kit at British Gas Xsol, it’s not a bad kit to be fair, I found that the blue clips tended to wear after about 3 or 4 swaps, an alternative I used was a pair of fuel line pliers to snap the cartridge lugs and then needle nose pliers to remove the cartridge, then you can use whoever sells the cheaper cartridge. Cheaper repair and unfortunate the recall happened, great tip on the slot as well😉

As other people have said - the first clampy thing is a bit useless - small flat bladed screwdriver in from the front under the tip of the lugs and twist to snap the old lug off (quite brittle plastic) - then long nose pliers to spin it a bit to break it loose - then long nose pliers again pull on the spindle with a good tug.

Salman .....I always give the customer the choice of doing this repair or replacing the whole valve with a recon unit , and I do tell them that it may leak again in the future so that way I cover myself if it leaks , it's all down to the cost of the repair and a lot go for the cheaper option of just replacing the cartridge....👍

Excellent explanation. Did you know you can just replace the tiny O ring that is the seal to the spindle. It's a bit fiddly to get the metal washer to slide out sideways but then straightforward. It appears to be an R-01 O-ring: 3.15mm internal diameter x 1.8mm cross section. I'll let you know if it leaks.

I fitted the repaired diverter yesterday in which I changed the "O" ring. The tabs were broken off and I refitted using large cable clips wedged in the two holes where the tabs were. All working fine and no leak from the spindle. Even cheaper than putting in the new valve assembly in!

I generally drill a small hole in the plate where water collects in these Vaillants. Then the owner notices the leak as soon as it starts rather than when there's 8mm of water swimming around and everything goes rusty! And before someone says it stops it being airtight: it isn't airtight anyway, which is why the water finally drips out!
