Valve Just Made a Meta Quest PCVR App!

Күн бұрынIn today's video, we will be checking out te brand new app that Valve just released yesterday for Meta Quest devices called Steam Link. This app is available for free in your Meta Quest store on Meta Quest 3, Quest 2 and Quest Pro. It will allow you to wirelessly play PCVR games on your Quest device through SteamVR. This is very comparable to Virtual Desktop, Air Link and ALVR, however, this integrates directly with SteamVR and is made by Valve. So, let's take a look, I will tell you a bit about it, show you how to set it up, and we will try it out. I hope you enjoy the video :D

It just works. Virtual Desktop is a paid app, it has tons of settings, lots of incompatibilities with common software, and is generally a pain for anyone who isn't an enthusiast. Now anyone who plays Steam games and has a Quest headset can play PCVR quickly and easily for free. This sets up Valve for another big VR game release alongside their new headset.

I agree, setting up and connecting your pc to the quest is always a pain in the ass especially with virtual desktop or when trying to start steam vr game through oculus link

I have no issues with virtual desktop and love all the settings it offers. It's not even that difficult to setup as it's just a desktop app that you pair. I'm not saying I won't try the other option but don't really see a need to switch as of now. That being said, I am also a Steam Deck owner that loves Valves innovation and am very excited about this new app.

VRCFT works with the module by Ykeara. Another plus of using the quest pro is that the foveted encoding is actually eye tracked. It's great on the Pro, but on the quest 2/3 headsets without that option there should be a toggle off.

I honestly couldn't get it to work at all (also Pro), I the whole page is very low res/quality, as soon as I move my head the image is replaced with an hourglass for a few seconds then another really low res image. Great news for VRCFT and if it supports foveated rendering, that'll be awesome. Think I'll stick to Virtual Desktop for now.

So apparently if you're on quest 3 and it looks pixelated, it's because the resolution is by default set lower than the quest 3's resolution, so just put it at the max and it should be good. In the video you could see Mysticle raise it to the max, but then they immediately set it to auto afterwords, so leave it on manual once you raise it up.

Except that foveated vision blurry mess is still driving some users away. Can't say enough of the curse words towards it. Peripheral vision is completely messed up in SteamVR.

@@chovr Already tried that option. Even with RTX 3090 it is still blurry peripheral vision, albeit with tad wider. I am unsure of what is going on. One of the other issue VD can actually be used as computer screen, while Steam Link cannot be.

@chovr if your computer screen is turned off alas you cannot at least when it comes to Samsung Odyssey series. If computer physical screen is off all it will show is empty box (just like air link), but the games can be played if someone doesn't mind smaller range of foviation.

I felt like SteamVR Link was WAY clearer (at max bit rate, within the foveated center) than VD (AV1 200mbps), and the latency felt better with SVRL. My only complaints with SVRL is the controller tracking doesn't seem to interpolate like VD which can cause a little tracking skipping, there seems to be a bug with the haptics through SVRL where they are weak/cut off early, and I wish they gave us the option to make the foveated portion larger or to be able to turn it off all together. If they can fix those few issue then SVRL will become my primary way of connecting to PCVR.

@@LagiohX3 in steam link, there are only very limited options in the VR Menu. In Virtual Desktop there are many more and it can look much clearer.

@@MRD0889 I'm not using PSVR Streaming very often - even though I have bought Virtual desktop. I never seemed to get the SteamVR settings right when using Virtual Desktop and everything seemed to be very blurry all the time. It was about the same with SteamLink today - however once in game everything looked pretty good and the input lag decreased significantly so yeah playing was pretty enjoyable. But keep in mind I haven't used VD Steam Streaming in forever like idk my last effort to dial in the settings was last year. Hope this helps at least a little bit :)

@@duwaine96 Your wifi and router just aren't good enough. the sad truth. My dad has gigabit and its crystal clear. My mom had 100mbit and the quality was worse with frame drops sutters and jittery controllers. So it have to use a cable.

Why do I feel like testing with HL1VR was a bad call? lol. Idk if they've fixed it since, but that game has always been a majorly buggy mess for me. Now testing HL2VR, that might be a good one to try

The only thing that would make this better: if they actually added some way to do the wired connection through this app directly as well, bypassing the need for Oculus entirely for specifically SteamVR, because it takes _so_ many resources to need to run Oculus underneath SteamVR simultaneously, taking away potential performance that really shouldn't need to be taken away.

Nice to see Valve upping their game. Also 100% another confirmation that they're working on their own wireless VR headset. That being said, both airlink and VD work really well with my Q2 (still need to get a new Q3). Some games (for some reason) will run better on one over the other so I'll probably give Steamlink VR a try as well on the more problematic ones.

I think you're viewing this through the wrong lense and are probably misinterpreting what I meant (I should have been more clear - sorry, English is not my first languge). What I meant to say though is that I'm happy to see Valve drop more and more VR related updates, instead of us mostly getting news from new references hidden in Steam's update files, dug out by SadlyItsBradley and people like him :p Gives me hope that some day in hopefully '24, we'll get some official next-VR-project by Valve news. @@JimmiZero

Gave it some testing, works surprisingly well for a first release, nowhere near as nice looking as VD on my setup but certainly works every bit as well as Airlink does and certainly seems a little better latency wise than VD. If they can introduce a little sharpening like VD and a bit of general polishing, it'll be an absolute winner.

Just tested it with my RX 580 and it suprised me. I can play on as clear resulotion as clear the headset's original resulotion with almost no lag (I just tested on 90hz but the minimum was ~70 in Alyx and Phasmophobia) I didn't knew that this card is powerful enough for this resulotion. I now prefer Steam Link instead of any streamer app (I could play on potato or low in virtual desktop)

@@milk2.5 Idk, I was curious how it will run at the stock setting (2524x2524) and it just worked, rarely my fps was just a little bit below 60 but it was fine, sadly I can't reached 90fps the maximum peak was ~78.

Buyed the oculus quest 3 for my girlfriend. Was blown away by the steam link how EASY you connect it and its crazy stable. Its really really awesome! I, myself have a Pico 4 because cheaper, but the quest 3 woulkd be my way to go.

I tried it out. Great alternative for people who don't want to pay for Virtual Desktop, or just want to jump straight into Steam VR without using a second app. But..... I already have Virtual Desktop and it is still king.

Steam Link works surprisingly well. My gaming PC is in my upper floor connected via cable to my home network and I’m playing in my living room one floor down wirelessly connected to an excess port which is also connected by cable to my home network. No issues at all, no lag or stuttering 👌

I personally will never use it most likely, but it is getting so good to the point where if they iron out some other things, I might just use it over a cable for story games. But I'll always use a cable for any latency based games like beat saber. Nice to see people are getting more options

Dear @TheMysticle , plz if u will compare Steam Link against Virtual Destkop... u have to consider the SS before about the clarity.... When u use Virtual Desktop, u are setting SS in the Streaming Resolution (Potato/Low/Medium/High/Utra/Godlike) for the the Quest 3 is (1440x1536,1728x1824,2016x2112,2496x2592,2688x2784,3072x3216). So to fair compare against Steam Link, u have to set the SS to the same resolution that u set it in VD. Love your content!

Sounds good. Will definitely be taking a look. I'd be cynical about the expectations regarding Valve improving it though as they're not exactly famous for regular updates to their software.

I tested it with the quest 3 and fbt tracking on vrchat and its amazing because everytime i use to took off my vr a little i use to descalibrate, but with this app i dont need to calibrate again, but well one of the things that i dont like its the delay because its wireless and my router isnt good, i use to play alot with cable link, hope they add cable link too

This beautiful because while I will love remote desktop and will continue to use it primarily, the think, i assume just because i need a better computer and an ethernet cable, I tend to have alot of days just be a hit or a miss. What i mean by this is that some days virtual desktop will run perfectly little or no lag, no connection issues, just simply vrchat and my quest 2 no issues, then other days I sit there in my purple void waiting for it to connect, and either it never does or it will and just constantly disconnect and or lag. So with this more native software I wanna try it and see if it can be my back up, for when the other decides to not work, because most of the time I just dont bother playing vr when virtual desktop isnt in my favour

Actually I’m thinking of getting a Quest 3 because my Rift S is dead for months now and I don’t wanna repurchase some of my games on Steam, and when I used to play on my VR I played a lot of Beat Saber, and I wanna know if using the Quest 3 with the link cable good for that? Like is it better than the Rift S in terms of visuals and fps WITH dynamic link? How’s the delay?

Yeah I tried it yesterday with vrchat. The graphics were pixelated but still i can tell what things are but there was 0 lag. With virtual desktop is pretty clear but there is stuttering in intensive worlds

Might use it over virtual desktop in some situations but there's either a bug or design flaw. It caps the quest 2 at 2048x2048... Where VD supports 2688x2784. So everything looks more blurry and unclear, real shame

Just tried this and it works great for me. I still plan to use VD since it has been my goto and the developer has always kept up with updates, so it seems wrong to just abandon it. Plus I use it for media watching and a couple of Patreon games that let me bypass steam altogether which frees up some PC resources.

Steam link is pretty good I’m in love with it compared to oculus link, oculus link has always given me some push back and that’s with me changing settings in its favor but using steam link and doing full body tracking in vr I have had only one crash but it was cause I overdid things being a bit cocky with the testing but other than that it’s been smooth now if you have a beast of a pc might not be for you but I got an ok pc and it’s been great I love it

VD is more sharp and clear even on Ultra setting than oculus link or wireless link at 1.5 resolution, with it set to quality in ODT, even though Ultra is a little less pixels than Oculus at 1.5x. I think because of the contrast sharpening and Snapdragon sharpening. They both feel the same as far as lag but VD sometimes crashes Steam VR and disables controller input and oculus desktop... But VD is my go to. Also Oculus desktop black screen issue unless you turn off HDR on PC

The reason face tracking wasn't working is because osc relies on specific variables/parameters on the avatar that's uploaded. The names of steam links parameters look different than what vrcft uses. The avatar creator has to rename them to match the steam link ones. Ex. Parameter would be "avatar/parameters/sl/xrfb/facew/LipPuckerL"

So does it stream the games from the pc to the headset or stream the games from a steam computer to your computer to the quest, I have a pretty good pc, but it can't run some games well and if I can stream from a better pc that would be good even if it takes a good wifi connection

One question the setting that you can change in the app of oculus in the pc like the resolution, the hz etc affect if I use steam vr?

From my first trial of SteamVR Steam Link, it does appear to have less lag than AirLink through the official Oculus/Meta app, but I’ve had a few times when launching an app leaves me only with the SteamVR launching window with no apparent way to get into the software itself (I do hear the game running in the background). Very eager to see if this gets updates.

In the experiences with my system, Virtual Desktop is acting like a keystone to the other link programs. I tried everything separate, got janky performance and random disconnects until using VD as the main link and starting everything from there, and though not perfect with a little tweaking of the settings here and there, it simply works. The Steam link is more stable then the Air link with the quest 3 but i'll keep using VD as the main link in tandem with both and for curious fun it even works nicely with verizon hotspot wifi provided the area has good cell service and set to transmit and recieve 5g and up signals.

This is insane for Linux users, as ALVR can have its issues and the Quest app isn't available on Linux, having this option might finally let me get rid of windows for good.

Foveated rendering is not an issue if using a quest pro. I played Diablo 4 on steamlink with it. glancing down to check the onscreen UI - everything is fine.

Hopefully we'll get it for the Apple VR headset. Although lack of controllers for Apple shows they're clueless on what gamers want.

Just Tested Alyx on Quest 3 with it , Feels more Cleared than the Oculus Link (My PC and Quest 3 Are on Wifi 6E Network, PC is not even wired) Will test AC and ACC VR soon.

I launched Steam Link wirelessly and then I want to run Beat Saber, but the game remains with the loading icon and does not go into VR mode. When I switch to the desktop, I can see that it started there, not in VR. Please tell me what I should change because I have already tried all the options. Beat Seber works fine on my virtual desktop, but I wanted to play it directly via Steam Link. After starting, Pistol Whip also does not go from the loading screen to the game and instead of in VR it starts on the desktop in 2D. I have quest 3

Im going to try using virtual desktop and steam link vr but if im still having issues, i will buy the prism xr wireless router to see if it can help play PCVR without having the weird wobble distortions

I wanted to love this but I can't seem to get the audio to work within the headset. I can hear the game, just on my pc speakers, haven't had this issue with any other wireless pcvr streaming service so it's pretty fustrating.

My mic doesnt work with steam link the first time I tried it. Will have to try to get it to work again today... I probably just have to go into steam link settings and set my audio to my microphone though. I am of course excited as it is significantly easier and this is a step closer to valves Deckard. This software needs a few updates, whatever they will release by the time that headset releases.

i tried to use it on my quest 2 but i doesn't work i mean it does start steam vr but it does not recognize my headset once it's on steamvr it says waiting for the conection and the oculus quest does absolutely nothing

Hi! I just saw this news and went down a rabbit hole of wanting to run two VR headsets at the same time from the same PC. I just watched your old video on it, and with the arrival of the new headset and this news, maybe you could update it to showcase an easier way to do it? I foresee a LOT of people having a quest 2/3 in the future and it would be so cool to have an fun and easy solution for my friend to just bring his quest over and both can piggy back off my higher end system.
