I grew up with Van Halen. Literally. I used to see them at house parties in Glendale and surrounding areas before they became worldly famous, when we were in high school.

What I love about them is that they stayed that way- DLR was always an attention-seeking hound, Eddie laid back and intense, Alex inconspicuous but a beast onstage, and Anthony steady but sure with kick-ass harmonies. They were a perfect bar band who overachieved and never let that change them. They were true innovators. I wasn't there like you at ground zero, but I was there when they broke through and will never forget that time.

This is really their first mainstream radio-friendly hit…years before “Jump”. Remember, this is from their second album in 1979….if this sounds like “eighties guitar”, it’s because everybody in the eighties was trying to copy Eddie Van Halen! Eddie had been developing his sound and techniques since the early ‘70s….when they were playing backyard parties in Pasadena, high schools…wherever they could….then they started playing the clubs of the Sunset Strip in Hollywood, until they finally got their record deal and produced their self-titled debut album in 1978.

I was 10 when this song came out, and for while, I really thought it was Bruce Springsteen! I was just getting into rock radio, and didn't make the distinction. This was a hard rocking pop song, and was different than what they were usually doing at the time.

Alex Van Halen has always been underrated as a drummer. Rhythm and melodics are evidence of their classical training and they are self taught drummer and guitar.

If it hasn't been said yet, Van Halen had 2 eras. The David Lee Roth era, the seventies/early eigthies and the Sammy Hagar era after David left/was asked to leave. Both had their fair share of hits.

Dave was more of an MC than a vocalist but a great frontman, so much swagger and energy, bassist Michael Anthony was one of the best backing vocalists, easily a better singer than Dave which rounded out their sound very well, and the brothers Van Halen were so dialed in with one another, for the short time they were at their peak they were literally the biggest rock band in the world, even outshined Kiss for a time; (which of course Gene Simmons of Kiss would say he discovered Van Halen, which he kind of did, he got them signed to WB records and Ted Templeman as their producer.)

Okay I'm going to make a very unpopular statement here. All three versions of Van Halen were fantastic but they were all very different. Check out pound cake from Sammy and fire in the hole from Gary so you hear all three head singers of Van Halen and if you really want a surprise, check out how many say I with Eddie on lead vocal

Most VH live isnt really representative of the song. Mainly because they were too wasted to be interested in playing the song like, or similar to, the record. This was decent.

When David Lee Roth and the band split, that was the end of Van Halen for me. They were never that good again. What's more, when Sammy Hagar (I can't Drive 55) became the bands new front man, his own distinctive sound disappeared. It was like we lost two great sounds and ended up with a compromise that wasn't as good as either before it. David Lee Roth continued sounding like David Lee Roth though. No one comes close to his sound, style, and stage presence.
