What a time to grow up as a youngster. American Rockers, British Punks and Jamaican Herbsmen. Another VH Classic and it's not even Monday. Mike's (and Eddie's) backing vocals always top notch. Try Dave's solo work for a change, Goin' Crazy with Stevie Vai on guitar... Im talking 'bout the Yankee Rose. Those were Good Times, Damn Good Times.

@absea7918
@absea7918 3 жыл бұрын
I agree. Sammy is technically a great singer, but David Lee Roth was the master MC, and made a Van Halen concert seem like a giant party. You can also see in this clip how much Eddie actually sings. The classic VH harmonies are Eddie (low) and bassist Michael Anthony (very high). For the solo, Eddie is tapping out the shape of the chord 12 frets (one octave) up from the chord he's holding with his left hand. So original, and cool.

You nailed it in your analysis between Dave and Sammy. Besides Dave was the one who got them there that’s actually the original sound: it’s mean, precise with great musicianship, and it’s funny. Not that many people can write funny or humorous, it’s tough to write attitude that’s unique. The great artists always have that quality.

David has enough confidence for the whole band, but each of them were brilliant separately. Alex doesn't get enough appreciation. He's simply a beast. Btw, watch some live Van Hagar. Sammy is no DLR, but that dude had a lot of swagger..minus the acrobatics.

Diamond Dave is an MC and he plays that up live, never did the lyrics the same twice, Michael Anthony was the better singer so he's a natural at harmonies, and he's a solid bass player in the Rhythm and Blues tradition, not too flashy, stays in the pocket

Glad you did this version. Top 10 fave song from them. You got to understand this is in 1979. They were mid 20s(close to your age). Quality of the video is not the greatest, but still good. The shows were where it was at. Only saw them in 84 and 2015 both Dave tours. I do like the studio version of this song better though, but just like to see em to bring back memories.

Roth blows a verse at one point in this performance and almost derails the song, but they hold it together because ultimately they were having a blast playing (or so it appears). Did you catch the nod to Van Morrison's "Gloria" there at the end? The harmonics EVH plays here aren't impossible to pull off but they aren't easy to do quickly either. Talent+Practice! The studio version of this song comes across more like a nod to mid-60's motown (think "Dancing in the Street" which VH covered on their third album, iirc.) than their 80's stuff.

Yeah, There's simply an undeniable Extra portion of that "It" factor that Roth has, which Sammy clearly lacks.. Not saying Hagar sucks, just Dave has that extra 'Air'/'Special' quality that many Frontmen simply do not have.. It's something that's unlearnable, you either have "It" in Spades such as Dave has or you simply dont.. And it's just undeniable when you See it...

For a young guitarist with some of that Eddie Van Halen DNA, do yourself a favor and listen to a live performace of Lilliac's song "Mars" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ebiipKuLs7O5m6M.html The intro to the song is a yeah-that's-good-stuff guitar solo. Like I said the guitarist is young and the band is younger, yet they show a proficiency with their instruments.
