Van Halen knew what were great songs of the past, too. On VH1, they covered The Kinks' "You Really Got Me." On other albums they covered Roy Orbison's "Pretty Woman", Martha and the Vandellas' "Dancing in the Street", and "You're No Good", probably done most notably by Linda Ronstadt (but recorded many time before).

Old-school VH...can't get no better than their early catalog of stuff.

The Mighty Van Halen!!

One of my favorite VH songs, but it's really hard to choose just 1 favorite from them. They have a deep catalogue. But this being their first song on their first album, and no one had heard anything like it before, it's a classic.

This debut album and first tour were terrific. This track and another from this LP called Atomic Punk, have some of Dave’s best laid down “high wire” screams of his career. The engineering of this first offering was so perfect, both heavy and yet crisp, that the only other debut album that comes to mind for these similar traits from that Era was Boston’s debut. Uncanny how precise they still sound today. Nice one Harri! 🤘😎

I bought this album upon release in 1978 when I was 11. I put it on and this was the opening track and I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. This is the greatest debut album ever imo, every song is 🔥

For most of us, this song was the introduction to Van Halen on FM rock radio. Then, when our big brothers bought the record, that's when we heard Eruption. And the axial tilt of the rock world shifted and changed forever. The echoplex on that clean distortion with a wide stereo separation became the most sought after guitar sound in rock.

Whatever song you pick by Halen, you cannot go wrong.

In my opinion Ed was one of the best if not the best rock guitarist ever.

Oh man I remember where I was when I first bought this 8 trk and put in in the Mustang's tape deck. Instant fan of the band. I always thought the "devil" in this song was the business they were in. It was taking them from their normal" lives and leaving them without real relationships and enticing them will all sorts of illicit desires. So many good ones on this album. Jamie's Cryin' ,Aint Talkin Bout Love' , Ice cream man, (you'll like that one) and of course Eruption the famous EVH solo.

VH1 is epic and Diamond Dave is one of the GOAT frontmen 🤘

First song I ever heard from Van Halen… and I was hooked … at least until they became Van Hagar.. This was the lineup.

Love your channel!!! Yup, this album and song was the Sea change that was coming. Rock music changed after this. I remember the first time hearing this song that it sounded too clean and streamlined, maybe too polished. I sure didn’t know what to think of the singer doing those weird multi note harmonic screams throughout. He seemed very over confident for a new band. The backups we’re to spot on and perfect. I was coming from Molly Hatchet, Cream and Grand Funk, but this was the new gloss! Stealth and shiny! It was the beginning of “ my music” not my big brothers who’s albums were handed down to me. Great reaction!!!

"the Brown sound" is what they called Eddie. The other singer, Sammy Hagar, said he became a screamer cuz he wanted a voice like Wilson Pickett. I didn't even know who Wilson Pickett was and yet, that was Sammy's biggest influence as a singer.

First song off the first album - still gives me chills. David Lee Roth's charisma and Eddie's guitar playing, naturally, both pop right from the beginning. What was apparent though as well is that Eddie and bassist Michael Anthony had great harmonies and Alex Van Halen is a very underrated drummer. Love the understated moments in the song which only makes Eddie's whining guitar playing all the more impactful. I don't think Van Halen sounds like Led Zeppelin, they have their own sound. Harri, please, please react next to another underplayed track from the debut album, the cheeky and rockin'-bluesy Ice Cream Man - one of my favourites.

One of the best guitar players ever. Want a longer solo, you got it! Here’s his showcase solo in the middle of a concert. The poster of the video titled it Eruption, but that’s not what it is. It is his entire solo break in the concert. It includes one guitar solo song from the first album, which was called Eruption, but it also contains bits and pieces from Spanish Fly, Mean Streets, Cathedral, and a bunch of improvisation as well. Eddie van Halen just goes off in certain songs .Alex his brother on drums is awesome to but is under rated because of Eddie's puitar.......my opinion

From this debut to Fair Warning, I really loved VH. They took themselves mostly seriously but not all the way. DLR was just obnoxious enough and hadn’t decided he was the star of the show. I always felt like this is what AC/DC would have sounded like when they started, if they were from LA instead of Australia. I think VH really wanted to be rock stars; Bon and the Young boys mostly got started for the free pints I think lol.
