Pretty sure that's simply a hikers crutch, it's what they do. It's not for us, it's purely for him and rightfully so. We're just lucky enough to be able to join him along the way. But I still stand with you on the fact to never hesitate to turn back. In the past he has done so and has time and time again shown his knowledge and experience in reading the environment and land.

Same pump i use for backpacking. Had 2 sawyers fail on me. Tip: Put a coffee filter on the end of the hose with a rubber band to pre-filter it. Will triple your filter life and you can do muddy water.
@therealpeterburke4 жыл бұрын
wondering how a Sawyer can fail. Would like to know, too. I've gone through several Hiker Pro filters, each lasting only a few weeks of total use in the Sierra Nevada. I think one lasted a total of 8 weeks of use, the other 15 weeks. The valve that does the pumping eventually fails internally and that destroys the entire filter. Avoid pumping with a full extended feed tube (as in sitting 5 feet above the water) as that will break it really easily. Get as close to the water as possible and it'll last a long time if you can afford the filters. You cannot fix the little internal flap valve that eventually fails. The filter media is also far too expensive as well, given you really can't back flush it easily , especially compared to a Sawyer filter that are super easy to backflush. Sawyer doesn't do the quick pumping out of hard to reach small streams, but when it comes to filtering with no moving parts, the Sawyer has a huge design advantage. Just keep it backflushed, plus you can carry two and afford 4 for the price of one Hiker Pro. A gravity fed bag setup should be super easy to rig up in the van or with the roof rack.

Both Sawyer’s just stopped flowing. I always follow mfg directions for back flushing and storing. Never ran tap water through them. They are designed more for continuous use, not weekend warriors. Both failed in the field.

@pete I’ve had my katadyn hiker pro pro about 5 years now. I’m still on my first filter and I go once or twice a month. I use the coffee filter trick. Haven’t noticed any weak points and I don’t baby it, seems robust and tough to me.

I may have been wrong, but in my younger days, I always drank directly from clear mountain streams, and never got sick. It was always the greatest pleasure after a long mountain hike to dip my face into that cold mountain water and drink. In my later years I would still drink from an underground stream that was exposed on the side of a mountain. I see people doing this all the time in Vermont - never get sick.
@forestyforest4 жыл бұрын
Some of these streams are really really long. Could be a beaver dam or a dead animal in the water upstream. Better safe than sorry. If it's just a spout sticking out of a hillside, sure I'd drink it no filter.
