In today's video, we meet Carolyn who is living in a Dodge Ram Promaster. She converted it herself very simply and reliably and she can turn it back into a standard van at the drop of a hat! Her conversion was the ultimate in simplicity and stealth! It's something anyone can watch this video and easily duplicate her build.

I'm not interested "living" in a van, but I seriously want a "hotel room" to travel with. As soon as I saw a Dodge ProMaster, I knew that was the vehicle I would choose, and Carolyn's video has simply proven it to me. We have children spread from SC to Minn and parts in between, and going to and from sometimes mean needing a place to sleep. I simply want a bed, potty and kitchenette...and this looks like the perfect solution. Thank you so much for this video!

I love it that people my age are finding ways to live more freely and within a budget. Not only that, but they are mobile and able to go when and where as their heart desires. This is great. Very well thought-out plan with everything she needs.

I agree, but I also think a person doesn't need to go "that far" to find nice places, but she did say she was "in the cold" and that is a real issue, especially if dealing with ice and snow. I left that behind 45 yrs ago.

Hi Bob: I don't know if some else already mentioned this but I use my battery drill to start my generator. Removed the pull cord and underneath is a nut, then with the right socket and adapter it is easy to start the generator. Something like this may help Carolyn start her generator, there are lots of KZfaq videos on this topic.

I have been researching van life for a few months and tiny house research before that. Just this week I had decided that a Dodge Ram Promaster 2500 Hightop is what I want to live in when I get to divest myself of "normal" life at a job and living in a box o' rooms. Very glad you found someone in the transitional stage! I'd often wondered what it would be like to start this lifestyle without too much money and be forced to do it piece by piece, figuring out as you go what exactly your needs are and how to arrange everything to suit them. She's a marvelous example. The tool kit was brilliant, I didn't even know you could buy a kit like that. The human and canine bed was also brilliant, giving up a little storage, but your furry friends have a great place to sleep and you don't have to share a bed. Thank God she had the settlement to help her in her new life with a brand new van, so at least that was ONE less stress point.

Dec. 23, 2017, Saturday, 2:30 pm, San Diego, CA: She's so lucky to have been able to buy a brand new van. I like how nice and neat she has created her living quarters thus far. I would love to do a hightop van, and get away from the greedy high rents here in San Diego.

She was smart putting her money into buying a more reliable van rather than spending her savings from the house on an expensive build. That said it takes money to live in a van and be on the move all the time in a world haters of vehicle dwellers. More and more states coming up with restrictions. I know someone who knows a nice lady in her 50s who works 2 jobs without enough money to move out of her car. It's not glamour and fun as she is stealth I the city and must work. Good luck in your travels. I find you lucky in aside from the emotional side. You did end up with something. Many people go through the same thing and don't. Hope you eventually end up with a base to go back to.

I love all of the stuff that she has done to get started. I think all of those little plastic drawer set ups are definitely the way to go because they're so light weight. And I like how she said everything not permanent so she can move it around as she decides it will be better in another place

Yay! I thought it was only me who didn't want wood all over the inside. Apart from the weight it kills my sinuses. Except for bamboo. And that stuff is expensive. Which I don't understand since it grows so fast and is so invasive.

I think bamboo is hard to process into plywood, even though it grows fast. Making it into attractive plywood is the expensive part.

Nice! But so many forget to drill holes in the plywood under the mattress. I think that´s very important to get more ventilations and prevent mold and stuff. A person really loses a lot of sweat/fluid during the night. I used boards under my mattress. Thanks for sharing!

Get a Triton tankless water heater, a 30psi aquarium water pump, a small one gallon propane tank, a small lawn mower battery, two adapters to use the smaller aquarium water pump line, and two alligator clips. Hook all this up and take a wonderful hot shower completely offgrid. Caution, turn to the lowest setting or the water will scald you. Good for washing dishes, pets, vehicles.

Excellent build out. The absolute best way to start out until you know what layout works for you is what Carolyn did. Everyone’s preferences are different and until you live a while in the van, it is really hard to assess what you really need and don’t. Great work, Carolyn!

I love this van and setup. Even I could do this. But I am also a vegan but I need a refrigerator for the amount of fresh food I eat. What a nice woman. I hope to meet her when I finally get my van. I think we would be great friends.

Use Coconut and Palm oil. Good fat for the brain and heart. These products are much better for the environment and indigionous workers. Despite what the GMO soy and corn industry says. (One acre of Palm oil, organic makes the same amount of oil as 18 acres of Soy oil, with pesticides) The people of India have (raw) milk and butter as well.

all you really should need is a 5 gallon water jug (or as many as you want) which are under $10 apiece at Walmart (I got some great ones by Igloo for $2 apiece at Goodwill outlet) and a bucket toilet (Dick's $20) and RV toilet solution ($6 at Walmart should last at least a month). Plumbing on the road should be easy.

I am impressed with this lady's ability to organize this van and actually do some of the work herself. Every day I am inspired to work toward this goal. I love how she used the reflective to cover the back door.

Here is a quick fix for pull starting the generator when you don't have enough grip strength. Make a 20" loop of paracord. Use a larks head knot to attach the loop to the handle on the starting rope of the generator. Put your hand through the loop and grip the paracord so the loop is across the back of your hand near the wrist. When you pull to start the generator the back of your hand will take the force and not your fingers. This works similar to an archery release product.

Michael Miller Joke: wrap a long length of rope around the starter wheel and tie the other end to the dog. Toss a stick and when the dog starts running it will start the generator. Since the end isn’t attached, the rope will come free and not stop the dog.

This is the smartest van conversion I've seen so far, and I've seen a lot. It confirms all my choices: this is the exact vehicle I would choose for myself, I like the two layer insulation (straight walls!), placement of the bed, I like the open space and I especially like her philosophy regarding not using tons of wood. Every other conversion I've seen thus far is overbuilt and cramped, with tons of plywood everywhere, taking away precious living space and weighing the vehicle down. And of course wood is susceptible to moisture, will warp, crack, mold, rot, etc. And I would go for a metal bed frame as well.

KarasekUS I agree, especially with the wood. Everytime I see the wood builds they look so cabin like, cozy & comfortable. Since Im from KY "Cabin like" looks, are awesome. BUT... all that wood is heavy & I always think that if not the same a similar comfort can be achieved in other ways without getting like 5 miles to the gallon LOL! I also agree with having a lightweight metal or PVC bed. In my mind if something happens like in FL or TX your set to be out of there & just fine, until you reach the 1st gas station about 75 miles away with a 4 hr line on less then 1/4 tank & find gas is $10.00 a gallon. Yikes! I know I'm over dramatizing that to a degree but. I say light weight on Every single item that can be utilized & "Spend," if you will your weight on other things like more Water or Food storage. Only thing I know that I differ in is if I had the $$ to buy this brand new & was free to do a build I would have to have a shower/compost toliet. Yeah there over rated by most since Planet fitness & other options. But again I differ to FL, TX. If planet fitness is under water or the building isnt even there anymore. Id feel more comfortable knowing I had it. In my opinion that is..LOL..cheers. KY Girl USA!

However I would move the kitchen across from bed, right by the side door, and use the two feet back area of the van as a bathroom (see: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r8dhes10rb6rmps.htmlm41s ), but make it an open concept, with a linear drain straight in the floor and a simple curtain for the shower stall, kinda like this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f7eGnbd5xLG2e30.html.

This is a fantastic and very inspirational video...particularly for those of us who do not have builder/carpentry skills, and who have worried about using heavy components while turning a van into a home on wheels. I love how she has all she needs in her build-up, without adding much weight, as it would with wood furniture. The plastic drawers, table etc... are easy to re-configure, if she ever wants to change her layout, and she has made great use of vertical space - again - while keeping it lightweight. Just added this to my liked videos. Thank you for sharing it!

Zentierra still pity her though. People with bad arthritis should really have someone around in case they're in bad pain. I have slight arthritis and sometimes can't even open my medication or mineral water bottles.

What are the dangers of using propane, in an interior space? I believe I read that propane doesn't create carbon monoxide, - BUT it may consume all of the oxygen in the air, if not ventilated. Is there a way to bring in fresh air without allowing cold air in, which would impact the ability to stay warm?

I just bought the Pro Master - love it - love to drive it. I was getting very anxious about building it out, it's winter, it's expensive, it's what I said I wanted to do!!!! I am glad I watched this video again. I had forgotten what my intention was in the first place which was to see the country and not have debt. I can do what Carolyn did, and start out simple, give it time to see what I want and where I want it. Phew, I feel so much better. I would love to hear what Carolyn has done with her van over the past year. Carolyn, If you are out there, I would love to hear all about it!

That's why I chose something newer. Less mechanical issues (I hope). I didn't relish the thought of getting out on the road by myself then have it breakdown. I have a payment each month but it is a heck of a lot less than apartment and home rents.

What you have done is really impressive. I bet you have been through a lot and you seem curious and courageous. I wonder if you have heard of Sisters on the Fly? They are mostly campers, but they would so appreciate what you have done and who you are! I hope you have adequate self defense tools (for alarming people and scary animals). I am in my late 50's and looking hard for the perfect car/van/camper/trailer set up. I am inspired by your work. Good luck to you!

When i decide to build, this is how I will do it. Cheap, light, and easy to remove. Refrigeration would be my only addition for ice tea.

I have camped w/my tiny trailer and also camped in my SUV. Both are fun, but the Promaster 1500 would be my choice to be used as a mobile motel--ease of driving, privacy, & space. I like my condo and community ties (church, friends, family) but crave more nature. Maybe become a southern snowbird! Still experimenting...!

Or mabie a Promaster 2500. For more reliability, check out a Nissan NV. It can go offroad if needed. And it won't break down.

Love her creativity and organization. That dog barking in the background is not Cody... It must be hers? My goodness I would not want to be a camp neighbor to someone with an incessantly barking dog but Carolyn appears to be a nice lady and perhaps the dog doesn't bark when in her company...

Thanks Carolyn you did the best yet explaining what you've done with your van. I love how you've done it all with things you can buy easily at the local stores. I like the easy insulation & you've kept the costs down. It gives me hope for my future.

Great video! What a smart lady for trying things out before she puts the money into anything permanent :) The van is gorgeous but I’d definitely get more windows installed so I don’t feel so enclosed when the doors are shut :)

I was thinking that too before the tour of the van (the separate 'interview' video'), when she said she choose not to have an extra window put in, because I thought, gee, you can always cover over windows. But then when she gave a tour of her van, with the blackout curtains open (large windshield and driver's side & passenger side windows), plus the two big windows on each of her back doors -- I don't know, I think there's plenty of light, and it made it easier to insulate. I think she may have been right...

Arh bless her.. everything in its place.Maybe safety gates made out of an old cot could be a solution to having the doors open and the dogs enjoying watching the world when parked up 😊

One of your best Bob. I had never given the Promaster a thought. You know Bob the new non compressor mini refrigerators are very nice, Avanti makes a nice 1.7 cf that uses 50% less power and is ideal for solar. Its also both 110v AC and 12v DC. sold at Home Depot $147.00. Might be something for Carolyn to consider. Since they do not use a compressor they are super quiet.

This has been one of my favorites too. There is exposed metal around the doors which reminded me of when I used fiberglass screen and magnets and spring clips to keep the mosquitos out of a van I once had. Good job Carolyn.

NICE, I am always amazed at the quality of people doing this. Then you have the great choice of a vehicle to host it, and an inexpensive but nice job on her conversion. Lots of positives going on there, that's for sure.

Hi Bob, I am just now seeing this video as I am relatively new to watching these style of videos and I am trying to catch up. You and Carolyn's RV Life are the first I ever subscribed. I don't remember which one was first. Seeing this video has finally convinced me I do not have to go big when I start my part time van life (part time because I take care of my 86 year old mother and 92 year old aunt). I will start out with the basics since I can't make up my mind how I would want my van set up. You have to live it before knowing for sure which is best for you. Thank you so much for this video as well as all the others that I've seen to date. You are my Professor Bob! I can't wait to watch and learn more. Blessings!

What a great start!! Love that she is living in it and finding what she likes and needs. Not over building and then regreting what she did. I can't wait to get started on my rv life! Watching this gave me plenty of ideas especially cause i will be traveling with my cat.
