This is why I love Louisiana!! The idea of your photographer NOT EATING is appalling. That would never happen.. I have had caterer, mother of the bride, grandmother of the bride.. heck sometimes the couple themselves actually fix me a plate and make me sit down and eat!! We take our food serious down here!

I am a nature photographer with medium level of knowledge about wedding photography. I always remind the people who ask me to be their photographer, that, I usually don't charge or charge less than others just to be a good friend. And, no surprise they always took advantage of my kindness. So, I think that photographer did absolutely the right thing. in fact, exactly the same thing happened to me that I was a guest of my bff wedding and on last minute, they decided to ask me to be their photographer with promise of compensation. I flew there, took all their photos, even handed them the Jpeg files to choose from....and bye! they disappeared! my bff...don't blame it on photographers to be kind. it's people being abusive

Another reason to not hire a Friend or Family member is because of the "Distraction" problem. I do Photo and DJ for weddings and if I'm not hired to do Photo and I'm just DJ-ing, I'll often times scope out the Photographer and see what they're shooting with and what shots they're getting. And when I find out they're family members of the bride or groom I often see them being distracted and talking to other family members and not getting the shots they should. As much as it's nice to save the money, it's way better to hire a professional with no ties to anyone else there and can work with little distraction.

I agree, never even show up if not paid in advance. That being said if this happened to me I would have totally deleted the photos right in front of the groom, on one card. The groom (I refuse to use the term client for this wedding) probably wouldn't know that my camera has two cards. After the couple as calmed down I would let them know that they can have them, at four times the agreed upon price. Verbally, and in person, with nothing in writing, then give them unedited jpegs and then find better friends.

We photographed wedding for 25 years. Year one was mostly friends so we got fed because we would have attended anyway. When we started really working, and getting fed 'vendor meals' which were dry sandwiches, we put in our contract to be seated and fed as guests. We always explained our policy upfront and the reason for it - being in the room with the guests so we wouldn't miss anything, photos of people eating are not great, etc. We rarely had any push back on this, even though many of our events were at upper end hotels. If customers value your services, we found that they were willing to assure that we were fed to sustain us for four more hours of photography. Meeting their friends and parents' friends at the table did get us more weddings down the road too! Maybe not a tack for everyone but it worked for us.

Vanessa, your situation would never be the same as this photographer's. I'm much closer to them, since I've only been the wedding photographer for relatives and friends. I've always done it without a contract, which you would never do. I expect that this photographer did not have a contract, and if they did, it was superficial. The problem $250 for a 10 hour wedding is that that is no longer on a "shoestring budget". A shoestring budget wedding is one where the reception takes place in the church basement and the entire event is 3-4 hrs. The bride went to "various appointments" before the wedding, that seems to go beyond shoestring. A shoestring budget wedding does not have so much going on that it needs to be photographed non-stop. The groom voided the verbal contract when they said the photographer "needs to continue photographing or 'leave without pay'." At that point, deleting the photos was reasonable. You, as a professional wedding photographer, would never do this because of the 'burning bridges" mindset. But a dog groomer doing this for an acquaintance is a different situation. Are the dogs they groom now going to be mad at them? Your expectation of editing is also based on the pro. The hobbyist, like this photographer or me, may often deliver the camera jpgs, and the couple is generally fine with that. Perhaps a few exceptional images are worth editing. In the same way, with the bad taste left by this wedding (or not, since they didn't eat anything), I would want to have nothing to do with these images. They can never be used for other promotion, I would never want to put them on my IG or website. Since I probably wouldn't delete them, I would go home, download the pics from the cards, zip them in an encrypted zip file and use a random password that I immediately forget.

It’s about choices you make, and when you want pictures you treat the people making them right. As you said, the pictures are the only reminder of your event. He was practically doing it for free, maybe for practice, maybe just for the fun of it, and if you are lucky enough to have someone like that at your wedding, be nice to them in every way. Breach of contract or not, so apart from the legal aspect of it, I am totally with the photographer, he was even invited as a guest before! It might seem a harsh punishment, but really, they brought it onto themselves.

So this story surfaced last year, and my thoughts were that the photographer was well within their rights to do what they did, given the rudness of the so-called friend(s), however - 1. I never insist on being fed, and I explain to the couple that it would be a lovely gesture, but I never insist on being fed. Typically I always bring my own food regardless. 2. If I am offered food, I absolutely always state that I'd rather be away from guests, as opposed to feel that I have to make small talk with people I don't know. What I normally do, is jump in between courses and capture the laughs and banter that normally happen during meal time (not while they're eating of course). Typically on any given wedding I'm fortunate to grab a quick 30 min break, but I'm fine with that anyway - prefer to keep active :)

After over 40 years of wedding photography I do have a lot of stories. Fortunately, I can count only on one hand the number of times I was not offered a meal. There was a wedding I did in Chicago at a large fancy hotel chain that supplied me a meal in the staff's lunch area. There I enjoyed my cold hamburger watching a large roach walking on the wall next to me, yikes. Next story, the bride had made arrangements for me and the videographer to have our meals at our own 2 seat table that was placed right next to the head table, awkward. Plus I can't count the number of times that the vender meal was a club sandwich!

We were shooting a pretty large wedding. I was 1 of 4 photographers.We had a room just next to the reception hall to store our gear and it had water/snacks for us. The coordinator coordinated us to eat right after the grand entrance since this is when the bridge/groom were going to eat. Right after we were served the food the chef came in to that room. I assumed he was there to ask us how the food was, well was i wrong. He started going off on us on how it was unacceptable for the vendors to eat before the guests. Since no one else said anything I told him that the coordinator set this up so we had time to eat before starting the reception events. Then he storms off to go "talk to the coordinator".

This happened no even 3 months ago. The couple lost everything in a Wildfire, I was told. Let's help them. "Absolutely, say no more. I'm down", was my answer and I committed myself with a 'pro-bono' project. When dinner time arrives it wasn't any kind of food for vendors. And the worse part: I didn't get an apologize or anything like that. I finished the night in a really bad mood, did my best in post production and delivered the video on time. Hopefully karma exists.

Before I worked as a videographer, I used to work as road crew for a sound company and once and was with a fairly popular band from the tri-state area and they were the house band of a hotel in New York City. If I remember correctly the band would give something like 20% or 30% of their earnings to the house and we were given stale sandwiches, but I remember seeing the guitarist pick up his sandwich and throw it across the room and make a huge stink about it since the hotel was making money off of them, the band, and charging Bride and Groom for the band’s dinner.

I can never EVER delete someones wedding photos. FULL STOP, regardless of the problems. Yes, I would hold them "hostage" till I was paid. It is common place for me to be served terrible "meal" i.e. cocktail leftovers etc, no cutlery and no glass of anything. I have and do order food at the Reception and eat it in my car . In regards to the theme of this video, this was first and foremost a guest, who gifted their photography as a present. Lets face it $250 is not pay ! They should have been seated with fellow guests. Personally I avoid doing work for relatives as it never goes well and I am not appreciated ! Also, I will never leave my equipment in place that I cannot see at all times.

To start off with we have it in our contract very similar the way you do. We go over this in detail with each event we do so they know up front. We have been doing weddings & special event for over 40+ years.One of the funniest things that every happened to us was when we were photographing a wedding at the Bel Air Hotel here in Los Angeles. This was in the 80's. We had been there many times before and never had a problem. I had around 4 or 5 of my staff working this wedding, very high end multi course meal. When it came time to start the first course we all sat down at our table, when out of the backroom comes the Maite d for the hotel up to me at my table, leaning over and whispered in my ear, that we are not guest, we are the hired help and you & all your staff needs to move. I bent over and whispered into his ear, Im sorry but we are not only photographers but we are guest, we were invited to sit down & eat per the parents of the bride and will stay here in our seat. He got extremely upset hearing that and decide it was time to make a scene & try & embarrass me in front of 300 + guest. He says we'll see about this, stand up. I stood up & he walked me over to the bides parents table , he said out load so everyone could hear him, excuse me for interrupting you by this photographer thinks he and his staff should be able to sit at a table and have the same meal your having. Now remember everyone is watching this go on. The father say they are guest of ours & yes they will have the same meal we are having. To which the Maite d is now wishing the floor would open up below him & he could disappear. He says to the father we have vendor meals for them, what would you like me to do with them, he walked right into that one. The father says why don't you eat them!!! The Maite d is now Bight RED, turns around and stomps his way out. The guest loved that. He never spoke to me again & avoid me all night. We have been back there many times since and never have had a problem again.

If this were a friend of mine, and I had agreed to these terms, and then they treated me like that, I would probably do the same thing to a point - I might format the card in front of them, but forget to mention the 2nd card in the camera with the backups. Then hold it over them later, depending on the fallout. In his particular situation, I think he was within his rights to do that though.

Recently I was a #2 videographer at a wedding. All vendors were invited to sit with the guests for dinner. The couple were amazing to work with. It was a great experience. I wish all of them were. I don’t think I would have deleted the photos. I would have expressed my frustration and left.

Great video. I do event photography mainly for non-profits but also sometimes for people I know from a non-profit. For personal projects, I ask them to make a donation and I work for free - but I always get fed and treated well. I love doing it. But weddings??? Obviously, it wouldn't do it for free but it's just too scary! I am also not sure I want to be a vendor - but I admire the stamina, photography skills, and business skills of those that do.

I always make sure i am paid 3 months prior to the wedding and i have had no issues so far but if i wasn't paid i just won't turn up and i would send an email a week before to let them know. With the food i don't care if they provide food just need to know so i can make arrangements. One thing i learned when i started doing weddings for free or cheaply is people will take the piss and expect you to work longer than agreed or expect more images. Moral of the story is if you don't value yourself and your time then why should anyone else.

When I used to be asked at the pre-wedding meeting if I wanted feeding I always used to decline. First ever wedding we did at a hotel, my brother who worked with me and I together with a few guests got food poisoning so self preservation. became the order of the day for the future.

Unfortunately, friends and family often expect the photographer to shoot their wedding as a "gift" and at a greatly reduced fee or free. They don't realize your also giving up the income from someone else's wedding that day. To avoid them getting angry if I'd say no, I always say yes, but let me check my calendar. Oh, darn, I do have that day already booked, making sure I'm some place the day of the wedding. I've also never experienced not having a meal here in Ohio.

I wonder how much will be lost for the wedding couple who spent thousands and thousands on the wedding if one person will eat. Wow. It's not about who is professional or who is not professional, what cameras and lenses. If he eat one piece of chicken and a few veggies it's not a problematic matter. About contract , he is a friend and it's different dynamics here. If someone unknown it makes sense to have a contract. It will be interesting to see photos of that guy. But he decided to dissolve it in the energetic field of the universe. Ended It is a hursh punishment for one plate of food . Interesting situation.

OMG Clark’s Landing is super nice! Fortunately I have never had an issue with being fed or where I sit. I let my clients know that I need to eat and where I eat is important to make the photo experience better which all of this was in my contract. And asked what I want to eat like a guest, which is nice. WTH was this friend thinking when they accepted this? I wouldn’t have deleted all of them. But maybe let them have just 10 images. Your assistant was amazing for doing that LOL I would’ve paid to be with you that day just to see him do this 😅 Miss you and all of our photographer friends ❤

The 'photographer' should never have got into that situation in the first place, but once there, deleting the photographs was a mistake as that left him with no bargaining power. Better to walk out and wait for the couple to eventually grovel. The story is from two years ago, are the couple still together I wonder?

I once photographed a wedding for a couple who were intellectually disabled who had no money. The church put on a wedding ceremony and a supper for them. they asked me to photograph their wedding. It was some years ago and I said I would shoot one roll of film. I charged $20 .I gave then 36 good shots. They never ever paid me. I of course was charging more that that for "normal "weddings and as I progressed I charged accordingly. I always acted professionally and had contracts and timetables and was paid in advance. We never had the internet,mobile phones,I didn't advertise but got much work via word of mouth. I still had a day job all the way through.Everyone who is a wedding photographer does not do their first wedding as a fully functioning and equipped wedding photographer. You learn as you go.I was never once asked for a refund although I offered that as part of my contract.I have lots of stories from my wedding photographer days as we all do. I ended up teaching wedding photography to many ,some became quite successful.thanks for the discussion. Geoff

I would not do it for a friend. But that said, I have a camera with two cards. I'd likely pull one of the cards, before deleting in front of the groom. Thus having the appearance of deletion but have my back up card in my hip pocket should the bride and groom come to their senses at some point.

I'd have just walked out. I doubt there was a contract--not for a friend's $250 job, but I were treated that poorly, I wouldn't stay. I also wouldn't even start editing until I was paid! Wedding photography ain't for sissies!

because of this, I go in with the expectation of not getting fed.. if I get fed, hey this was not expected.. and if I do not get fed, I'm good, I wasn't expecting it in the first place... regarding the photographer... I would've just kept the photos and used them as samples to further the business... they lose their work that they couldve used in the future... thanks Vanessa

I've done like 20 weddings and I was always allowed to sit at a table (with the children, singles or grandparents :-) ) but I could enjoy the same food all the guests had ! Often it was the best food I ever ate and they even made vegetarian dishes especially for me (I was the only vegetarian at most weddings). Maybe it's different in the Usa ?

Shooting weddings is hard work but fun. It were some of the best parties I went to and best food I ever had. If I had to sit in the corner with my own granola bar and a bottle of water, they can shoot their wedding themselves with a cell phone ! I was always treated as a guest or even a distant relative. People were always kind and interested in what I was doing. I guess it's the European culture vs Usa. I never had a couple complaining about the price or quality of the pics either @@VanessaJoy

I had a temper trantrum i'm not proud of when the ENTIRE pre ceremony and ceremony, the FOG was in the front row taking photos with his big DSLR, not enjoying the moments or even paying attention. MOG was no better, recording the ceremony on her phone the whole time. I couldn't get photos of them enjoying the moment. It was an outdoor wedding and the bridal party was in a gazebo for the ceremony. Right before the kiss I snapped and jumped up on the back of the gazebo getting a wide kiss shot behind the wedding party looking towards the guests so that MY kiss photo would be better than FOG's kiss photo. Mine was, but it wasn't my best moment and not super proud of my behavior. Also, how would you handle setting expectations during pre-wedding communication if you don't have food language in the contract? In the past I usually handled it during conversations, but in buffet style weddings it always feels awkward going and building a plate after the guests have cycled through.

haha - I mean... if he was in your regular spot than you had to go somewhere else, right? I'd chat with them about it ahead of time, potentially, but in the buffet situation or if I asked the maitre'd earlier on when/if we're typically fed, and it's either later than I'd prefer or I'm not being fed, I just GrubHub it... it'll cost you $30 to do so and save yourself time and aggravation.

When we had a ball at our club, the photographers and band were quite surprised we had set aside a table for them (plus their wardrobe for off-time) and they were welcome to help themselves from our buffet. Apparently a backroom and sandwiches was not uncommon?

Yeah back room and sandwiches happen. I think that’s fine too as long as the hall isn’t charging the client $50 per vendor for sandwiches

2 things first 1.I LOVE that background. It's Dope. 2. Wherever you got that shirt, do they make it in men's? $250 is a rich wedding for Willtoft! (Kidding obviously) I don't know if I would delete photos (Especially because I'm not a dog grooming shooting a wedding) But this is best badass of him hahahaha. I love your tantrums hahaha. So good. I haven't had these types of experiences...yet, though I'm prepared for when they come to a head, thanks to experiences like yours and you telling us these.

I would never agree to shoot wedding photos. It's not my field of experience. In this situation, I might well show the groom that I am deleting all the photos on my camera just to frighten him, but they are backed up onto a second card so I can retrieve them. Certainly, I would then hold them until I'd been paid and a bit extra to cover the cost of my food it I had to buy it.

Vanessa, I don’t shoot weddings, I can’t be that nice. But I have been a ceremony photography and have experienced some of baloney that you have talked about. I would not place my equipment in a separate room that is open accessed and the Maitre^d had a royal fit over my staging in the reception hall. Also, deleting the photos would violate your contract.and the cheap rate is not going to help your bottom line. My advice to any one is: don’t work for friends and don’t family events for money The dog groomer just lost a friend. Know your worth and demand it even from family. I am glad I shoot architecture and landscapes. Buildings and landscapes do not argue with you and try to stiff you on the agreed rate.

@@VanessaJoy I do landscapes, avid bird shooter and drone photography. I own a 54 year established restaurant so if photography was a primary income I would do weddings. It’s too much work, I wouldn’t consider one these days for less than $3k

someone I new. asked me to photo their wedding. I and very good. Butcould only do photography as a hobby at that time. I worked for donations. they gave me 350. I asked them if they could get a professional to get them. BUT they wanted me (I took Donations) LOL Very small venue with a lot of people. only one location to shoot from. I made it clear that if I don't have that location I will not to be able to get any pictures of them. I could not get it because a relative refused to mo0ve. I told them. (all happen before wedding I was going to set up my tripod in that location) at the end he was made that I didn't get any good shoots. They told me they already paid me. So I deleted all photos after giving the money back. And told him I laid out what I needed and you only paid me 350 so you get what you pay for. Like I told you hire a professional. I laughed and walked away. I have shot underground metal bands, Private events and grew up with a camera. so I know what was needed for this event. this place was a small church that the seats where taken out to fit the guest for this wedding. so no way to capture anything at all unless you were in that one spot. LOL

Oh man. I hear stories like this and it kind of makes me nervous about doing weddings. I'm starting my business next year and am still building my portfolio. I realize weddings are a great option in terms of income (not in the case of this guy though lol) and I actually am pretty good at video editing, I just may want to wait until I can do some second shooting at a couple before I jump in. Maybe focus on headshots and product photo/video for a while. I'm just grateful to finally be moving into something I really LOVE and really enjoy, cause right now I work in a sheet metal shop (with injury, surgery on both wrists last year) and... it sucks. But hey, just four short years ago I was living on the street, going through awful $|-|IT like getting stabbed. Turned my life around and am beyond grateful everyday. Got my R5, an extra 70D, strobes, speedlights etc. Just a little while longer. I'm ALMOST there...

19 years of shooting wedding and I have SOOO many vendor meal stories. Try being vegetarian, a lot of venues don't know what to feed me so they bring out salmon and say you eat fish though right??

@@VanessaJoy Client lost it, I thought I might get punched so I let them know that I still have the 2nd card. They still didn't want to pay me what I was asking SMH. By then I just wanted to go home and thought some money is better than none, so we ended up meeting somewhere half way. In hindsight I really should've just walked out after deleting the first card, mention the 2nd one a day later and insist on being payed in full.

Knew a photographer that hadn’t got the balance paid for a wedding. BG said would have that day. He went, left gear in car, asked for the balance, got a run around, went back to car and left. Did not shoot the wedding and kept the deposit.

I wouldn't of deleted the photos but I do agree with you Vanessa I would've held the photos hostage, and maybe demanded more money... and as far as the photographer not eating that is just wrong, however I would've been prepared with snacks regardless. That is just me. But I would have just left I wouldn't of deleted the images.

Obviously they are not friends close or otherwise, calling someone a friend requires mutual respect. Friend like the word love is used too much today. A friend will hire you and pay the same rate to do XYZ as opposed to a stranger for the same job with knowing my friend is just as good or better at it. In turn my friend will honor me with the same professionalism and respect to do the job correctly. But in this case I think the photographer wanted to get their feet wet and this was and opportunity so one they didn't know what should they charge and two I doubt if a contract was even thought of to address breaks and food. I would not have deleted the photos personally I would need them for my portfolio and any so called friend would have given them the pics in spite of the circumstances it being a wedding but would have ended any association with them going forward.

I straight up tell people that I'm acquaintances with "I'm not your friend". I'll tell them I like them but we're not that close yet. Sometimes they don't talk to me after that and realize they were trying to hide who they are from me.

Awesome job by your second….Bands are the absolute worst… Show up 10 minutes before reception…Think who they are… and blast through all the food like mini tornado’s…With no regard for the other vendors that have been with the bride and groom all day…Not all bands…Just 99.9 percent of them…Bottom line..Always have a back up….
